Hello guys,

I have two KitchenAid dishwashers that spray a fine mist coming out from the motor underneath when it is running. I know that the shaft seal needs to be replaced. I have read my servicing manual thoroughly. Can anyone tell me which size of "o" ring to use on the motor seal? It doesn't give the measurement or thickness in the service manual.

Also, are the shaft / drain impeller seals available? Can I find something at the local hardware store or do I have to order from KitchenAid? The manual says one seal is stationary and the other rotates.

Thanks guys!

There should be (there USED to be) rebuild kits for those pumps that include all the seals needed. If I remember correctly, the kits even came with impellers. You'll need the model and serial numbers to get the right kits...

Do the right thing!

You cannot purchase the shaft seal kits anywhere but from Whirlpool or from Hobart. As a Hobart Tech, I would strongly recommend you get them from your local Hobart office.

Since the 15,16,and 17 series use the same seal and drain impeller kits use this number:

P/N 117011 Current Hobart list is $27.80

Since the 18,19 and 20 series use the same kits, use this number:

P/N 435102 Current Hobart list is $47.60

These are HOBART numbers and will not cross over with the Whirlpool numbers.

What I like about these kits is that you are getting the benefit of a commercial style drain impeller which will give longer life in the 15 kit and in the 18/19/20 kit, you will get a drain impeller which has larger vanes on it and will drain the unit faster and more completely.

So do the right thing and don't try to fit the wrong item into your machine.

One last word of advice..Determine which kit you need and do not tell the parts guy at the hobart office that you are using these on a Kitchenaid machine as they will most likely be in the dark about what fits what. Some of them were not even born when Whirlpool bought Kitchenaid and very, very few actual Hobart offices were even authorized to repair the domestic line of machines. Just us old timers know what the story is!

If you cannot get to an office,l let me know and I can purchase the seals for you and mail them.

didnt we all?

Drew,
Don't I know it too..all those low UM's not to mention all the WM's as well.. Now we bang our heads on LX's and SR24's(reincarnation of the WM 5 series(based on K/A 18's) with a redesigned tank and door!
And while they wash better than their predecessors except for the UM's, they are still something of a Bear to work on.

All of the pain and none of the glory...

Don't forget the environment. Kneeling in spilled alcohol (or worse) while the bartenders walk around, over or thru you.
Listening to demands for you to 'get a move on it', getting little thanks when done but LOTS of bitching about the time/labor spent from the same owner who earlier said 'I have to have it fixed no matter what it costs...'. Then crawling back into your service rig, smelling like you rolled in the bar drip tray at a Animal House toga party from Hell... That and cleaning out Crisco like grease build up from inside a Wells fry head assy just so you can even SEE the backside of the thermostat... Nope... I do not miss my commercial service days although I did LEARN alot from them...

Here you go !

The part number for the 14 series shaft seal is 77107.

You should still be able to get those at a Hobart office. It will be a ceramic type that goes under the pin. Some of the earlier ones were made of a hardened brass material but the 77107 works just fine.

Hopefully, you don't have one of the motors that were made without the stainless steel rotor shaft. If that is the case, you may be out of luck since you will not be able to find parts for those motors anymore. Let me know and I will do the leg work for you.

Thank you so much guys for your info! I would definitely use Hobart parts. I want to keep my classic KitchenAid dishwashers going for as long as I possibly can!

Wow!
I had no idea Hobart still made parts for their home dishwashers. Do they make the parts for the 20 and 21 series KD's?

Nope!

Bobby,
Hobart does not make any parts specifically for the Kitchenaid Line anymore since WP bought the line from them. What you have to remember is that the commercial and domestic lines were nearly identical in the components they used and the major differences in them were the timers, tanks and the drains and lack of drying mechanisms on the commercial units. The commercial UM begat the KD10 series and as the UM improved, so did the KA's up to the 14 series. In a reversal, the Domestic line of the 15/16 series begat the WM Series (WM-1, WM-2 and WMES-3 series). The 18 series in it's European configuration became the WM5 series here in the States(minus and plus some differences.)

Since the technology was shared, so were the parts for them. The UM series went out of production in 1979 and under the old Hobart replacement parts availablity policy was to provide parts for 15 years after the last machine was made. So by 1994, they didnt have to make parts for them anymore.
But remember, many of the parts for these commercial units were soucre thru Kitchenaid and if WO didnt see fit to continue making them, then anyone with the older units was SOL.

So when I mentioned the part numbers for the seal and impeller kits here, I know that they are the same parts and are still available but there was never any point where Hobart used the other parts in their commercial machines other than the motors and switches for the doors and such.
Now many more parts are actually available for the older K/A's as long as they are still used on the current and not too old Hobarts.

For example, the pumps for the 15-16-17 are available thru Hobart but more expensive than if you could get them from whirlpool(if still available from WP). The pumps for the 18,19 and 20's are the same as the WM5 and now used in the SR24 series machines and again they aren't cheap and the upper washarm housing and lower washarm are different but work great(see the pics below of my own Daily driver with the improved arm). If you needed the plastic supply tubing that runs from the pump to the upper washarm manifold in the 18,thru the 23 series, you could get that from Hobart though I would bet WP would still have it too with the numbers of units still running out there.
It can be a hit and miss project so it would be best to check first or at least in both areas of supply.

One word of caution, like I tell everyone.. If you walked into a Hobart office and told them you wanted parts for you Kitchenaid machine, they would refer you to Whirlpool. If you have confirmed the part numbers as being the same, I wold say to just call or walk in and just order or buy the parts and not volunteer that they are going on your domestic unit.
In addition, you may be hard pressed to even find someone in most Hobart offices who wold even know where tp begin heping you with Kitchenaid Dishwasher parts. There were very few Hobart offices that were authorized to repair the domestics and most if not all of those guys are gone now. You would also be amazed at how many old timers had no idea that the two lines were so similar because, let's face it..the majority of people back in the Kitchenaid glory days, couldnt afford to buy one. My dad paid like 600 bucks for our KDS15 back in '67 which was an ungodly sum of money back then. He paid for it by joining the book of the month club and made payments for like 3 years on it.
I always had a passion for the KA machines and was tearing down the 15 within weeks of getting it installed. It also helped to have my uncle working at the local Hobart office at the time!
I hope this helps..and if you have any questions on parts or availability, let me know. Always glad to help any of you.
