Laundromat... DON'T count on getting the amount that they say on the news and on TV...they go by how much you paid in on taxes (Line 10 on 1040 EZ). I was expecting 600.00, but received only 333.00 That sure put a damper on my plans. :( STUPID GOVERNMENT! | ||

Preventitive maintenance.
Since WP/KM washers are known for issues with rusting center posts, would it be a good idea to remove the inner tub before the maiden wash and coat the outer tub & center post with POR-15, you know, just in case Robert, you wouldn't dream of using this one for parts for your '57 LK, now would you? (Just checking Can't wait to see how this one turns out Dave | ||

The machine was located on an absolutely beautiful farmstead about 30 miles northwest of downtown right on the edge of the metro. The person who sold it to me was a friend of the family. The husband bought both this washer and the matching dryer for his wife in 1957. The wife loved the dryer and used it to death, it was still hooked up, but she didn't trust automatics and continued to use her Maytag wringer until her death. The washer, dryer and wringer were all still there in this basement I've heard this story over and over again with some of this machines. | ||

That is the model my mother had. A painted cabinet, and no ozone lamp. Must have been the model one down from the Lady Kenmore. At any rate, I had always thought is was a 1958 model for some reason. Seems like 1958 was stamped on the tranny. That machine was still in use until the early 1970's Very nice catch Robert!! Not often that one finds a "new in box" 50+ year old washer! How silly people were about their wringer washers. Think of all the extra work that poor lady did all those years Is this a keeper for you? | ||

Wow, Robert what a find, you can almost smell the newness!!! a sleepless night was had by you last night I guess!!! isnt it strange how the lady owner wouldnt use it, the thought of it sitting next to the dryer & wringer all these years..amazin AND, you have definately have redeemed yourself after the "RETIREMENT" of said previous model!!!! I have to say, this is my favourite TL model having been the first ever US top load machine I used myself at the convention in 2001...ohhh & those ozone lights and that waterfall...purfect!!! Hi Everyone, just a bit of background, this machine is the 800 series with is the step down model from the 900 series Lady Kenmore. The only extra features I see that the LK has over this machine are the following All Porcelain Cabinet, Ozone bulb, End of Cycle Bell, Lighted Control panel, Lady Kenmore script on the front chrome piece, otherwise the machine is exactly the same As I suspected you couldn’t just bring the machine home, hook it up and start a wash load. You would be very disappointed when the motor just hums. After years of the belt sitting in the same three pulleys the belt has molded itself to the pulleys. I had to gently rock the belt back and for to loosen it and get it unlocked. I should add some grease to the wig wag sliders and prime the pump with hot water. Otherwise it should probably work fine now unless there is a leak somewhere. I’ll know this weekend and will keep everyone posted Let us know when the Frigidaire's are on Craigs List.Craigslist, eh no time for that, its just easier to put them in the alley for trash collection. ; Is this a keeper for you?You might say tha But you've gotta give her some use; she has waited long enough.Never, ever will this agitator be used, its too amazing.. I have two others of this style that are in really nice shape that I will use I notice the oval lint filter does not have the turn latch. I wonder why. I was wondering if someone was going to notice that. The earliest WP/KN recirculating filters didn’t have a latch key, they were held in place by a larger rubber gasket around the edge of the filter (part #2). That was changed in the ‘58 models because if people didn’t clean the filter properly it would start seeping out onto the tub ring and create a major leak. (see photo below). Also in that photo below anyone notice something odd and the unbalance load instructions compared to 60s-80s machines with an off balance buzzer??? I can only imagine the wonderful scent of that new washer. OMG Rich, the scent is amazing, if only there were a way to record a scent and play it back through my smellavision set! I’m gonna go out and buy some unscented detergent to use for its initial washes Does the Tide have any scent left?None, just like almost every other box of 50’s Tide I’ve found I didn't know what the braces were on the bottom, until I realized that they were THE SHIPPING BRACES, and OF COURSE I would never have seen those before! Me either Nate, I’ve never WP/KN shipping braces in my life, much less still installed I trust she will be fitted with a new grounded cord tho???Seamus if the stock cord is still good I do not remove the cord, what I do is attach a wire from the back of the machine and ground it properly to the cold water pipe I was wondering if you were going back for the matching dryer? No she offered me both the matching dryer and the wringer but they were both beat to hell. You can tell they were really used hard all these years. No need for those for members who scour the internet on a daily basis to come up with that ever-so-rare find (MachineHead) I know I look everyday usually, except I was really busy on Wednesday and hadn’t looked at CL yet, thank you MachineHead for letting us know AND, you have definitely have redeemed yourself after the "RETIREMENT" of said previous model!!!!Uh huh ;

I can't believe how wonderful this is. There are so many NLA parts in new condition all in one place! The agitator is just stunning! Can the shipping braces be copied for use when moving other WP/KM machines? I wonder if it might be worth carefully measuring some of the parts, photographing them, and producing measured drawings of them so that they could be replicated in the future. (no metal part is ever truly NLA, you just need a good machinist and some $$$$$$$). The smell, the color, the shininess, this is amazing! Are you going to keep the other '57 Kenmore? Raising the lid to redistribute the load, then closing to resume operation...hmmmm... Usually the buzzer sounds until you manually pull the dial out to stop, then raise the lid, redistribute, close the lid and push the dial in to restart. It says the machine stops, but does not signal you at all. Am I reading that right? Yup, you got it John. The 1957 models had a lid-switch with four wires going through it. As you know, the unbalance sensor is a switch and solenoid to hold the switch open to keep power from reaching the motor/spin solenoid/timer motor when the sensor is hit hard enough by the baseplate. While the sensor switch was very similar to the 60's/70's sensor, the 1950's sensor let the sensor plate travel all the down for the solenoid to hold it tight (and quiet). In the 60's they changed the design slightly so the plate couldn't quite make it all the way down, and when you prevent a solenoid from traveling its 100% route of travel the solenoid complains loudly by buzzing. Now the 1957 Lady Kenmore wired the sensor solenoid in parallel with the end of cycle bell, so in the Lady Kenmore, the bell rang every five seconds during an unbalance hold condition. Since the 50's switch was wired through the lid switch, opening the lid would break the power connection to the solenoid releasing the switch and putting the machine back into drain. The load is rearranged and when the lid is closed it moves from drain back to spin via the spin solenoid. The only problem with for us when we jump out the lid switch, the off balance sensor no longer works. | ||

You literally are only missing a few things out of all of this. It didn't have the original box that it came in and no sales receipt! I'm surprised a 1957 Sears delivery truck didn't back up into your driveway and a sexy 20-something delivery man (now of course in his 70's) bring that down to the basement for you! I was thinking the same thing Volvoguy was saying. It's amazing to look underneath and see all of those impossible-to-find parts in such perfectly new condition. It's only something like this that makes guys like me get a little emotional. hehe... So be honest Robert. Even you probably couldn't sleep last night with that stunning machine sitting quietly downstairs. I don't know. I think you should still get the matching dryer, Unfortunately I'm out of space, so if I want that dryer I would have to pick something out of my collection to remove, and I can't think of anything in my collection that is worth getting rid of for that beat up dryer. So here is an update I ran the machine through a number of tests tonight. It now has two issues that will need to be resolved before its first wash. #1 The cold water valve is energizing, but no cold water is coming out, I suspect the rubber is stuck in the valve. I'll have to take the valve apart and see what is going on. #2 the rubber tub to water level pressure tube hose has hardened and is leaking badly. This hose will have to be replaced, luckyily I have a nice supple one in my parts stash. Unfortunately to replace this hose I have to remove the basket since its retaining ring is located inside the outer tub. I'm gonna try and work on these issues over the weekend. | ||

You're Both Lucky:
Robert - you're lucky to have found this machine, of course. But it's lucky to have found you as an owner. Not just anyone would have had the know-how to assess what needed doing, let alone had the tools and parts. A lot of people would have hooked it up, not understanding for a second that fifty-one years take a toll on rubber and plastics even if they're not used. And of course, disaster would have ensued. That Kenmore washer is absolutely beautiful God!!!!!!! that must feel good. That washer was the turning point for me. It was my first vintage machine that I used at my Aunt Maggie's house . . . I knew it was an older machine then. The house was in Virginia where my family would visit in the summer. She had nine kids and I was about 9 or 10 at the time . . . the beautiful truth is that Maggie never laughed or mocked and downplayed my interest in WASHING MACHINES. She encouraged me about them and she was intrigued that I knew more about her washer then she did lol . So in a southern accent my grandmother would holler down the basement "Maggie is that boy bothering you oooh Darren!! Are you making Maggie turn on that washer!" .... my grandmother sort of downplayed my interest because every house we visited I had to look at them or turn them on lol and I know you know what I mean as well as everybody. Anyway Maggie had a mountain of clothes and left me in charge to do them all yaaa that felt good. ...... 1957 KENMORE WASHER 1.THE FIRST WASHER I SAW A COOL TEMP SETTING ( I THINK THE NEW MAYPOOLS BROUGHT THAT SETTING BACK) HMMM 2.THE FIRST PREGNANT ROTO SWIRL AGITATOR THAT I LOVE 3. A TUBE LIGHT THAT I NEVER SEEN AND DID NOT KNOW ABOUT THAT LIGHT AS A OZOONE LIGHT UNTIL THS SITE.. AWESOME THANKS GUYS 4. THAT LOVELY WIG WAG KENMORE SOUND! The last time I saw a mint condition washer on here was in member's photo it was Calypsobruce 1965 Lady Kenmore with that Roto-flex agitator that's one of my dream machines fabulous... is he still around? Lastly, Robert, I was wondering even a tub of cold water for the first wash you can't use the new agitator for one time and will that damage it and why would it? And is there anything else that's need to be tweaked or repaired ? You enjoy it to the fullest!! Can't wait for videos! Darren K (eddy's washer)

Bob, congratulations on your fabulous find! I have one question, are you planning to change the gearcase oil before using the washer? Even though the washer has never been used, do you think the oil will be OK after 50 years of sitting still? I really hope you enjoy your new toy! Emilio | ||

If you use it, even once, then it's no longer new, unused and mint. Used once, sure. Lightly used, sure. But not new, unused, and mint. Given that there's a possibility this is the only one in this condition left on this planet, I think Robert's being very smart to protect its status as long as he can. There's also no telling how that fifty-year-old Bakelite's "first day" shine would react to today's detergents. It might come out just fine. But then again, it might not- we don't get many opportunities to subject NOS items to a first use under today's conditions, so who can say for sure what might or might not happen? Robert understands his obligation as caretaker of some amazing rarities. | ||

It should be remembered, though that the machine has suffered some deterioration in storage, making some restoration necessary. The only way to know if restoration efforts have been entirely successful is to use the machine a bit, protecting certain parts as you do so. Because of the deterioration that had taken place on a few rubber and plastic parts, the machine was certainly unused, but was no longer entirely mint. What I'm trying to say here is that on balance, I think Robert is doing the machine way more good than harm. As a whole, the machine is more important and significant than it was before, because it has almost no use on it, but it is in working order. Because of Robert's custodianship of the Kennie, we not only know what those machines looked like new, we're going to know how they sounded and worked when new. We can't know that from an unused machine that is just left in storage. Remember that with the agitator replaced, the remaining parts are ones known to hold up fine to modern detergents, like porcelain. And it's not as if Robert's going to put much mileage on this baby- I'm betting it gets only the occasional ceremonial washload (Robert, correct me if I'm wrong). But that pristine agitator can never happen again, so I think he's smart to hold that back. | ||

Well lets see for a brand new machine it sure did have quite a few problems: #1 Leaky Tub to Pressure Switch Tube Hose #2 Water Level Switch needed to be adjusted, the machine would have literally overflowed and flooded the basement with the water level switch set to high. The internal rubber inside the switch must have hardened slightly from lack of use. #3 Agitator Drive block was not manufactured properly, this caused a low level knocking during agitation on large loads. I replaced the drive block and the knocking is now gone. #4. The all Alumnium Pump was leaking though the top where the control rod enters the pump body. Four or five hot washes seemed to have cleared up that problem. #5. Agitate control plunger was squeaking from the inside of the solenoid housing during agitator, a little lubrication solved that problem. Even though the washer has never been used, do you think the oil will be OK after 50 years of sitting still? The transmission oil was just fine. If you use it, even once, then it's no longer new, unused and mint. That's right Sandy, its brand new agitator will never be used. Even though I doubt a couple of wash loads would change the shiny look of the agitation, its just the idea of keep it pristine. "Doesn't the same logic hold true for the entire machine? The Long Awaited First Wash Video
Here's a quick and dirty video of the '57 Kenmore. First in the video you will see me switch on the motor for the very first time (after doing so preliminary checks and loosening the drive belt). Then I filmed it’s very first wash load. The snubber was quiet noisy at first but you can hear it get worn in and quiet down over the course of the first 5 minutes of the wash cycle. The slight knocking you can hear (after the snubber quiets down) is the drive block that was manufactured incorrectly. Once I replaced it with brand new one the knocking went away. Also notice that the lint filter is working so well that by the end of the rinse cycle the rate of recirculation has slowed to a crawl due to lint totally blocking the entire screen! | ||

To use or not to use.....
Cool you got the Kenmore going Robert! It sounds just like one that was rebuilt, with the new clutch sound audible the first few seconds of spin. I do not blame you one bit for not using the original Roto Swirl. I found a brand new Surgilator for my 56 WP a few years ago. I used it for awhile, then noticed that there were small nicks in the blades from zippers, ect. Now my Surgilator is no longer perfect. I use the new one sometimes now, but never for jeans, and things that could cause more wear. Cannot wait until we can see where this Kenmore 800 machine sits in your vast collection!

The agitator looks like it just arrived off a space ship!!! So tricky to get a WP/KM to agitate without water. Did you do a trick or use the "SUDS" setting. Such a beautiful washer. They'd sell like hotcakes today if WP brought them back, so energy efficient with the Suds-return. Did you know that with careful sorting many people washed up to 4 loads in the same suds with not-too-shabby results. Wondering what the second switch is for in pic # 8: Off On--can't read the saying Love the hot med warm cool cold and the "Modern Fabrics" cycle which sounds so funny now, must have been so edgy then.. So happy you got a brand new washing machine from a half century ago. Time machines are around the corner. | ||

So these higher end KM models allowed you to use only one drain hose when in the off position like the GE Save/Return switch. Only familiar with the MOL's which simply featured the Suds setting on the main dial--no cool extra switches to play with--Darn! Having the OFF button would save on the clangs of the Suds valve when not in use, but that signature clang is all part of the magic. Wonder if Roberto will use the Suds-Return if for nothing else than the sheer fun of it. Now, how 'bout that Visimatic off/on switch. ;'DDD | ||

Does this machine do the four spray rinses in the middle? All 1957 Kenmore Models: 3 Minute 1st Spin: It has one minute spin only, then two minutes with four seven second spray rinses. 6 Minute Final Spin: It has one minute with two seven second spray rinses and five minutes of spray free "dry" spin. I wont explain why I used quotes around the word dry lol. | ||
