I saw a promo on Spike TV for a show coming up on Sunday called "Carpocalypse", and it appeared that they are staging a demolition derby with appliances bolted to the cars. It looked like stoves, mostly.

I hate demolition derbies - they are pure waste and excess. There is nothing more infantile than destroying vehicles that still run and drive. Except when they put appliances in the mix. This is not cool.

Those cars are usually junkyard cars that were made to halfway run just so they can get trashed again.

Don't get me started

I can't stand the creepy Jesse James freak. Him and his "team" took a nice, non rusty vintage Ford Bronco and cut it up beyond repair. And the "monster truck" they made out of it was not even cool, nor really even usable. Just garbage.

Demolition derby, by the way, I have seen old wagons, nice cars, on EBAY for just that purpose. There goes vintage parts supplies, great cars to restore, etc. I think it is about as infantile as it gets. This is our history, and there is precious little of it left to start with.

For the record, was glad when that garbage Dukes of Hazzard went off the air, so they would stop trashing the limited supply of Dodge Chargers.

I've run demo derby before, even won some money and trophys. Best car I had? A 75 Buick Riviera,a somewhat rusty Michigan car, that had been vandalized, and stripped.Got it running again, and had a good time,in about 3 derbies with it.
It was a car that really had no value to collectors in its present condition, not much in the way of usuable parts, and was destined to be heading towards the crusher.
Not every car is a collector piece, just as every appliance is not valuable as a collector.Look at what's said here about the newer offerings from Maytag,or Frigidaire.Anyone going to be collecting them,in 10-15 years?
sounds like this topic should maybe be in the sandbox.....

If you ever noticed while watching the "Dukes of Hazzard" most of the stunt scenes were "re-runs". There are close to 150 episodes, and each one has some sort of stunt in it with the "General Lee" flying up in the air, riding on two wheels, etc. Very few Chargers however were actually destroyed, because they initally filmed stunt shots of the car perfoming whatever it was, and then used the library of stunt shots to assemble the story.

The exception to this however was the Police cars. As the show got newer, so did the police cars. Most of the shots of Roscoe messing up a police car were actually unique to the particular episode.

What I *DO* like about the Dukes however was that it was a good, well-written TV show that the entire family could watch and enjoy. Yes, there was a little bit of violence in the form of fistfights, but gunsshots never hit a person. There was no cussing or swearing, and the storylines were pretty simple "good prevails over evil" type.

When it comes to Spike TV, they ought to just call the station "stupid TV". I have yet to see anything on that station that really has any redeeming quality in it. I mean, even daytime soap operas on the "big three" at least have some sort of plot, but the stuff on that station seems to be there just for a cheap laugh, or for a "shock and awe" factor. I'm not quite sure who's laughing though, because most of the stuff is just so absurd you wonder why anyone would even watch in the first place

Sorry, many Chargers were destroyed making this show

moviemopars.www6.50megs.com/doh/g...

www.breithaupts.com/totc175.htm...

www.classictvcars.com/69-charger....

Over 200 cars were destroyed during this show. 1969 was the year of the car, but 1968s were also employed, with 1969 front and tail pieces welded on.

Other accounts I have read is that the number was even higher than 200, because the other cars that were cut up to replace components on different cars. For cars that were not destroyed, many were hopelessly modified with fuel cells and welded on iron and were jumped repeatedly, rendering them useless. This would put the number of total cars used even higher.

Fortunately, Dodge made enough of these that they are still available. The fact that I have a 1968 Charger makes this even a more sore subject for me. Even when these cars were 10 years old, they were looked on with great interest. I could not imagine smashing one up. I remember the collective "oh no!" we all felt at the end of "Dirty Mary Crazy Larry". Hollywood, leave the Chargers alone! :-)

DOH police cars

Yeah, fortunately, the police cars were what I called the "Ugly Years" at the time, they smashed up a lot of them, and not just on DOH.

Now I love those old Dodge Monacos, AKA Bluesmobiles! Too bad I never see them anymore...I'd take one in a split second!

Ironically I just watched Dukes of Hazzard last night. It was funny in a strange way...but those poor Jeeps and Dodge Chargers...

The Ugly Years

"Now I love those old Dodge Monacos, AKA Bluesmobiles! Too bad I never see them anymore."

I don't mean the full-size Dodge Monacos, those were OK, I mean the Plymouth Satellites with the ugly bumper guards like Hunter drove.

Demolition derbys with applainces

Makes me think of the thread about "Extreme Makeover" involving the cast ripping the door off the vintage Westinghouse oven. With vintage things more desirable these days-they should think twice before destroying them for a movie or TV show or demolition derby-the cars or appliances may bring bigger money from collectors. The appliances strapped to the cars sounds very odd-whats the purpose?Although guess a more spectacular end to them than just going thru the crusher. At one time read about an Army artillery test range where they shelled old cars for artillery target practice than collected the "remains" for the scrap.A car hit by a HE artillery round would be well "shredded"

We really are a wasteful society where we throw things away without a second thought.

As for demolition derbys look at the people that like this kind of think.
