Ever heard of this one? Neither had I - but boy was I in for a BIG surprise.

All of us here at aw.org love vintage magazines from the 40's through the 60's. Finding them at estate sales, garage sales - or maybe in the trash can be quite fun. Popular titles include Better Homes and Gardens, Look, McCall's - just to name a few.

One of the things that always disappoints me is the small amount of ads for white goods in these home-maker geared periodicals. I always wondered if there was something out there that ONLY contained ads for the things we love - appliances!

Well - this one surely hit the spot. I'll try and take a photo or two each night of a new ad in this mag. Since the size of the magazine is too large for my scanner I'll try to take the best photos possible.

This edition of Electrical Merchandising is from January of 1958 - right in the middle of the '58 model year run. The magazine has ads from all the major brands - Westinghouse, Maytag, Hotpoint, GE, Blackstone, Whirlpool, ABC, Kelvinator - just to name a few. A neat thing to point out is all the ads are not geared towards the buying public - but that of the mass merchants that would have subscribed to Electrical Merchandising. Each manufacture is trying to make their point to all merchants why they should choose to represent XYZ and earn the biggest profit!

I picked this ad tonight as it brought tears to my eyes when I saw it. Enjoy the TOL 1958 Whirlpools - in PANK!

If I remember right there is a video out on the net somewhere from Whirlpool about this set. Didn't Pete pick up this washer in white during the 'big find'?

the brand new 1958 Imperial Whirlpools!

This is a stunning set - don't think I had seen what the 58 Pool Imperials looked like before this. Yet another belt drive on the list.

I wonder if this is a high speed dryer - or a regular 4800w model. Hum - maybe a porcelain drum as well?

Never-the-less - a dream set at best!

Till tomorrow - enjoy,

Ben

I used to love those Whirlpool's with the push button open lid. I think 1958 was the last year for that. I also miss the sounds.

Ben that is a wonderful magazine. Where in the world did you run into it at? Love the combo ad as well!!

Ben, Imagine my thrill when I found the whole bound run of that, Appliance Manufacturer, its predecessor Finish, (which dealt with porcelain and other appliance cabinet coatings) and a couple of other trade magazines back in the late 70s when I came here to work. I spent a LOT of time copying from those magazines.

To the best of my knowledge, WP dryers and combos did not offer the 50 AMP option. Sears kept that as an exclusive.

Congratulations on your find. Tom

I have seen these before

When I was at The Ohio State University pursuing my Ph.D., I ran the Home Technology lab as part of my associateship. In the basement, I found a crate of these magazines and they entertained me for my entire stay in Columbus. OSU had two equipment labs at one time - a laundry lab and a kitchen equipment lab, both originally built in the twenties, remodeled in the mid fifties and then gutted and consolidated in 1990. Sadly, the facility was closed in 1998. I wish I had kept the magazines. I am sure they were tossed after my departure.

A lovely selection of Blackstone washers.

Had NO idea the model 350 was known as the 'Royalist Washer" - retail for only 349.99.

Convert that to 2008 dollars and yer looking at $2611.00.

I guess that is nothing compared to a Duet steam in green!

As suspected Electrical Merchandising is also full of ads for other goods of the times. Televisions, mowers, fans, air conditioning units, refrigerators - you name it, it is in here. I'll also throw a few in as well over the next few days.

Here is the lovely line of Westinghouse televisions - fresh from 1958.

Till tomorrow - enjoy.

Hint for tomorrow: you had your choice of three colors in this washer line in 1958 - besides white.

Ben

It's amazing how popular the combo was back 50 years ago. And now you can't get a decent one.
I wish Bendix was still in business.

Wow - that is just too cool. I love all the pics. Perhaps you should just start at page 1 and keep the thread going until the back cover! Love the pics, Ben - thank you for sharing it with us.

Does tomorrow's laundry line have an "all-new" agitator in it?

HOW COOL BEN! TYVM!

Funny how the gas dryer was $50 more then and probably still today!

Is it me, or are those price not too far off from todays's priwa--before all this front-loader mania. That was a big slice of income in those days!

That 58 Maytag ad must have cost some bucks! I have the agitator booklet but have never seen the ad that it was used in. I would never have guessed they put it in a magazine.

Thanks again, Ben - we'll be looking forward to the next turn of the page!
