New arrivals from Millersport Ohio, turned out to be in excellent condition........ Washer is model A500, Dryer is a DE300. Washer needed a little help but nothing serious....dryer is so quiet and smooth as Maytags of this era tend to be, its almost silent in operation........

Model DE300

Post# 287146 , Reply# 11   6/25/2008 at 01:59 (5,782 days old) by filterflo (Chicago Area)

This set is the older style with access panels from the back for the washer........I like the style of these with the grey bottom kick panels and stainless trim band at the top of each.....since I didnt have a Maytag set, these are going to be keepers, at least for a while.........

If I had to choose just one pair of machines to do my laundry for the rest of my life it would be a pair like that. Simple workhorses that do their job well and dependably.

Truly a great addition to your already great collection.

VERY nice, Jimmy!! Were those called "Super Highlanders"? Have you figured out what year they are from yet?

They were workhorses, that's for sure. Simple and dependable; who could ask for more! :-) Congratulations!

Not sure of the year of these, hoping a member could help out with that. I think they are from about 1962-1964.......Ive repaired hundreds of these models when I was working for the dealers during my summer college jobs, but I never really knew how to date/year Maytags.......

Congrats, Jimmy! Nice addition to your collection of matched sets. I love the simple/utilitarian nature of those early Maytags.

I narrowed my A300 down to 1964. It's the single-speed version with the same looking console.

Dates ...

Jimmy ... I think the washer is from September 1963 if the end of the serial number is "LW".

I can't make out the end of the serial number on the dryer, however.

That little crown on the dial in the rinse cycle--is that when the spray rinse starts or is it the start of the rinse fill. Unfamiliar, so I'd like to know if all Vintage Tags have a full minute long spray rinse, and is that one of the reasons why you guys love them so much?

Michael, the "crown" as you call it, is a one timer increment for the spray rinse. There is like one minute or two minutes of more spinning after that. Then the increment which stops spin (I think I remember that right) then it starts filling and after one increment then the timer turns off until water level switch has been satisfied.

Simply, well Simple

Hi Jimmy,

That is a great set and looks like they will just keep on working for a long long time. Clean, simple, and dramatic. Well, 2 out of 3.

Hope to see you soon!

Nice set you have their Jimmy, nice and simple but Maytag quality through and through. They will just go about their duty quietly and non complaining. I noticed that the cord for powering the washer comes out by the water inlet hoses. How odd that Maytag would do that(god forbid you open the lid and see what is going on inside HA HA) you would think that Maytag would have had the power cord away from water as power and water don't mix. But I guess it all worked out ok. The HOH dryer may be a bit slow (4800 watts ??)on drying but what the heck, everything else today goes by too darn fast anyway. Enjoy them!

Doug

Hi Steve and Doug, I knew you guys would like this set! They sure are solid Maytag quality. The first thing I did when I got the washer was to bypass the lid switch so I could see all the dramatic Maytag wash action! In a similar fashion to the dryer, this washer is exceptionally quiet. Got to love that silent tub brake on the washer! No loud bang or clunk like the GE's or Norge's...... When you see a set like this you realize the criminality of modern "Maytags" and other modern washers......and you realize there is no substitue for quality....

Still learning

Are these helical drives? if so what was the name of the transmission used right before the helical?

Quality!

Hi Jimmy nice set. Isnt it amazing how well those things are made and how long they've lasted? We will never again have things made that way again in our "Throw Away" Society. It amazes me at times what shows up here in the group you really never know whats lurking in someones basement..or garage..or old shed. Congrats on the find!

Best Maytag agitator IMHO

bajaespuma's profile picture
Whoever told me that this generation of Maytag agitators rocked was so right. The action on those things with the water surging out of the bottom makes me wonder why they ever switched to the Power-fin agitator. Those flexible fins don't hold a candle to this thing.

Filter Flo,

The next time you post a link to one of my many musical numbers, can you at least sync up the sound to my lip movement? Also, you know my best performance was during my shrinking violet period, when I performed the Chocolate Soldier at the "Little Theater" in Albuquerque NM.

Happy washing!

Hey Rich,

Yes, I was sanforized although it did not take very well. Here is a better, in-sync take, of my infamous appearance.
