Found this on the loading dock of my favorite Appliance Store. I spotted it as I drove by and could tell right away it was a GE. Closer inspection proved that it was in VERY good shape. So here we have a GE 1DA 923 dryer, and a good start of another vintage set! I have a washer that is a close match to this in storage,,,,,,,,looks like its going to be a keeper !

Though not a top of the line model, this is a medium to upper model, in that it has the "compensated" control, porcelain top, interior light, dial light, and air freshener......

Earlier version of the GE door grill/baffle. I believe this to be about a 1959/1960 model and GE still used the small grill for the air flow thru the door.........

GE dryers of this era and design were solid stationery backs that did not rotate with the drum. The grill you see here is where the heating element is located, in a rectangular array. GE did not go to the solid drum with a circular heating element until about 1961 models.......

Back of the dryer,,,,,unusual opening to access the motor/blower/controls........

All of the motor wiring diagram is present, along with instructions for 110 or 220V operation. The compensated control must be readjusted for the different voltages.....

Data Plate......... This dryer runs very nicely, but no heat! So my next step is to do at least a partial disassembly and find out what the heating problem is.......

Nice dryer, Jimmy! You can use the Synthetic Suit Dewrinkler setting for all those young modern polyester knit outfits that are worn to smart dinner parties!

...but I will never, never, NEVER, understand GE. This must be a special builders' model, a variation of the DA 920R which came with the control panel on pedestals. This model looks absolutely identical in features and controls to that one, save for the pedestals. Why in the world, back in 1958, did they feel the need to produce two versions of their TOL dryer???

That's a neat GE dryer you found, I admire the classic styling of GE laundry equipment in that time period. Innovated to say the least, and good quality equipment and designed well. But Jimmy do I spot a Signal box fan in the garage next to the Buick? My grandparents had that same fan as I remember it well, we got it back when they moved to FLA. I remember it wouldn't fit in a window as it was a large fan. My mom gave the fan to a friend of her's which I didn't know she did. I only realized it a few years later when the fan was missing and I inquired about it. That was a great fan and quiet on low speed too. Good Luck with the dryer, as I am sure you will nail down the problem and get it fixed.

Neat dryer, Jimmy! I love that 'Synthetic Suit De-Wrinkler' button. It conjures up images of someone pressing the button then being sucked into the dryer for a de-wrinkling!
How did that air freshener work? Was it like a spray that was drawn into the dryer air circulation system??

What a neat find. I think it's amazing that out of the 10,000's of machines that pass through the recycler's hands per month and all the times we've been to the appliance graveyard, we've never found a vintage GE washer OR dryer in ANY condition. I do hope that this is a close match for you to your washer.

Rich
