Hey guys!!!

I started working on the 69' filter-flo the other day. I got the old tub, tranny, and boot out in order to replace them all. I put in a brand new, never-used tranny. The only thing that sucks about that is it uses the 9-tooth spline instead of the 20 so I have to get new splines for my agitators. No biggie.

The problem I'm sure you've all experienced is how to get that darn boot on and get it to seal. I got it clamped on finally but had quite a bit of water escaping the outer clamp. I'm wondering if you can go too tight on the clamps? Should I just get caulking and seal it that way too? Any info would be most helpful because I'd love to get this machine back to life soon.

FYI...I did check out a little bit underneath. The original tranny is still there and the two "fingers" that determine speed are both intact as well. That's promising news and hopefully we'll get 3 speeds again.

Anyways, thanks in advance for the advice!

Jon

John are you using a new boot? If not the edges of the boot are going to be dirty and have debris from the old tranmission casing. What I like to do is take a green 3M Scrubber pad thoroughly scrub the sealing edges of the boot. If that doesn't work than yes, using silicone should work, but it will make it very difficult to work with if the boot or transmission has to come out again.

Sealer should be a last resort. Make sure the tub surface is clean, and that the boot is debris free.

Scrubbing was what I was thinking too. The boot is brand new but the outertub is very dirty. There was lots of debris from the washtub rusting away.

I also learned the hard way on how to carefully clean an outer tub like this. ALWAYS WEAR HEAVY GLOVES!!! Seriously... I was scooping up some of the gunk out of the trough where the boot fits and got a nice rusty needle in my finger. OUCH!!!

Jon - I would suggest getting a Tetanus shot if you really stuck yourself good - Lord knows what that stuff in the outer tub could contain!

Tetanus shot:

Yes go get a tetanus shot. An infection would be a bigger pain in the ass than the shot, lol.

After that you can painlessly get your GE up and running.:)

Have a good one,
James

I have found that you can reuse the boots, but as was already pointed out all attaching surfaces need to be cleaned of all deposits. soaking the boot to soften helps. also dunking the edge in very hot(but not boiling water) helps to dissolve depositis. Have some limeaway.

And make sure, if the stainless steel clamp bolts break, you replace with similar. Years ago (1989) I replaced the tranny in a Dispensall and foolishly used a standard bolt and nut which rusted in a matter of months. lol

Good luck. I would get the tetanus shot to protect yourself.
