Well as some of you may know I've been busy with moving, it's not easy putting 35 washers and dryers into storage then moving them into the new place. Most are still out in the carport. Got some strange looks from the neighbors moving them here. Anyway here's a little preview of the new laundry room, although they aren't all in their places yet. Hookups are finished for 13 washers.

Let them be shocked now, just wait until you have 100 AW members over for a wash-in!! Your basement looks wonderful, keep us posted on the rest of the house too! (I have long distance to Canada included on my phone now so there's no excuse!)

A wash in

May now be a possibility someday soon. Since the kitchen was original 50's without a dishwasher I had to go looking for a portable and I found this one, a KA Electra top loader.
Yes, let's talk soon Greg!

All the machines look great Eddie! I love the original tile on the floor - very classy.

Glad to hear the move is progressing. It certainly is nice to have something familiar set up in a new place - even if it is only 35 washing machines :)

am not ashamed to admit it. Your Speed Queen collection is breath-taking. Hoping to appear not too stupid, since I took piano lessons during 6th grade geography and forget where B.C.is , I live 10 minutes away from Ontario, and having been a member only 2&1/2 years, I don't know where you moved from. Nevertheless, I am very happy to know you and now I GET YOU with your daily driving Maytag wringer. Mine is identical in black and green but square. I bet you recycle water. I spent part of the evening taking pix of the SQ with the Norge agitator and I got soaking wet and loved it. The whole basement got drenched, and it is my sincerest hope that the pix become amazing.

Like you and the great AWorg patriarch, Gyrafoam, I change washers with seasons, but there is always an automatic rapid-advancing, and a wringer wringing, and a Twin-tub spinning somewhere in my home. We need to come out of the closet about out love for washing machines, and celebrate what we're really here for, the neighbors be damned.

One wonders what Gladys would think.

What a wonderful new home for your vintage washers! BTW, that KA Electra top-loader is to DIE for!!
The floor in the new room must be vintage - a very nice touch.
Good luck in the new home - your neighbors will have years' worth of stuff to gossip about!

Nice layout!

Hi Eddy,

Thanks for posting those pictures! I'm so glad you were able to move all 35 machines! Yes, I can just hear the neighbors comments "what on earth are they going to do with all those washers and dryers?" How was wiring and getting the water and drain lines installed? I'm sure it was a major task. I'm sure you've got excellent pipe fitting/installation and electrical wiring skills! I should know as we had all of our old lead water lines replaced with the newer copper for the entire house - including the line run from the street main to the water meter. That was a major undertaking - but since we had walls exposed for remodeling we decided to do it right the first time and be done with it. The water pressure is so the best now! You can run the dishwasher, and both of our SQ's at the same time with very little loss of pressure. I can only imagine the muscles you have now after moving all those machines - especially down the stairs!

Have a great 4th of July! - Mike

Mike, you mentioned running new copper lines in. Well we just had a burst line underground and had to replace a section already. I'm thinking of doing 3/4 copper in all the way.
Thanks to all for the kind remarks!

That Viking's agitator closely resembles an old Kenmore bake-lite straight vane agitator. Wonder if they use the same drive block.

Liking the Viking

The agitator in the Viking, is it called the Turbo vane?
I was looking in my stash of old Eaton's catalogues and it was mentioned in the 1964 models but no pic.
Your washer was heavily featured from 1974 on, probably before too.
Your deluxe model that is shown in the catalogue says it has a lint filter, where abouts would it be?
I am in search of a Viking square tub, but they just don't seem to surface. I know there must be some out there somewhere, I believe Eaton's called them The Wash Day Work Horse.
Lucky you to be in Burnaby, fond memories of a beautiful place

lint filter

eddy1210's profile picture
Hi Brian, the lint filter was simply the drain hose put through the hole in the lid and strained through a stationary filter. Mine doesn't have the filter but it has the hole in the lid. I guess I could put something like a mesh over the hose and filter the water while I wash. BTW I'd love to see a pic of your harvest gold GSW wringer, that would be a Beatty, no? I've seen square tub Vikings before but not lately.
So Malcolm you saw the vids, glad you liked them.
Eddy

another question

So when the washer was washing did you just put the pump on drain and it would pump the water thru the filter?
Or did the washer do it automatically when you started it?
Your deluxe model was also insulated?
It must be as heavy as hell.

exactly

eddy1210's profile picture
I just put a nylon mesh on the end of the hose, like some sleazy pantyhose or whatever material I have lying around. Then just turn the lever to pump. No, nothing automatic at all, except for the timer which will time the wash and shut the machine off. This model doesn't appear to be insulated although it's a very heavy machine.

Hi Eddy

Thanks for the info on the washer.
It must be a lot older than your washer.
All the ones shown in the catalogues only show 1 lever or handle.
I watched your video and it makes me want one twice as bad.
For a powerful looking agitator it certainly didn't splash any water out.
It is really quiet too.
Thanks again.
Brian.

Speed Queen Love

Hi Eddy (again)!

That literature that gansky1 posted on the other thread with model FA9101 was very much like our harvest gold 70's SQ. The only thing ours didn't have was a control panel light, no soak timer, and no flotation rinse light. Other than that it was the exact same styling on the control panel. The timer had a light behind it that would illuminate while the machine was running. Maybe I'll get lucky and find another one like it eventually. We purchased ours from a home owner on the outskirts of town for $50.00. They said it didn't spin correctly. They had a mechanic come out and look at the machine and stated the washer would need to be replaced as it was a complicated fix. Silly fools, the guy just wanted to sell a new washer and dryer. All that was wrong was the pin on the fluid drive that attaches to the shaft of the motor was broken off. I replaced it with a cotter pin and it worked fine for a while - until the motor shaft snapped in half from having the belts on way too tight. I replaced the motor and we had this machine for quite a few years. They also had the matching dryer, but we didn't need one so we didn't purchase one. We had a dryer just like the one gansky1 had in the garage and now Ben in Iowa has the pair. We also had that exact same washer in harvest gold before it was traded for our 1983 Raytheon model (which we still have and use). The brake gave out and since it had a timed wash fill it would only coast to a stop and a lot of water would spin out before coming to a complete stop. This resulted in not filling the tub completely and I would not stand around to turn the dial around just to finish the load. Oh, the stories I remember about our SQ's!

About your water line - we replaced ours with 3/4 copper from the main to the meter. We've been replacing the old lead pipe whenever we've done remodeling and now it's all done. The last of it was replaced when we remodeled our bathroom and ran new plumbing there and to the attic for our 1/2 bath up there. That room is my other roommates space.

Mike
