Yesterday I was out running errands and I drove by a local appliance store here in Davenport, Iowa. I found this KitchenAid Superba KDS-18 model behind the store waiting for its pending demise. What surprised me is the near mint condition this machine was in. It appears to have been rarely used.

The interior of the dishwasher is mint...no scratches, no dents, no chips. The pump area is clean. The filter is spotless....even the thermostat (visible) is still a bright copper color.

racks...

varicyclevoice's profile picture
The racks are in pristine condition too...I couldn't believe it! no broken tines, no rust...and the vinyl coating still bright blue. I put water in it and ran it and everything appears to work fine! The motor purrs and all valves, indictor lights, etc all work.

The only thing I could imagine is that this machine may have belonged to someone who never used it...and perhaps they sold the home and the new owners may have decided to replace all the appliances.

This model is one of my favorites...it is packed with features. I truly stumbled on this by shear coincidence...and luck!

How could anyone send something like that to the crusher??? That's just sinful. Beautiful machine. It will probably serve you very well for many years to come.

Without a doubt!

What a fantastic find. It WILL serve you for years. It seems like there are alot of these units coming "back on the market."
I guess after 30 years most people get rid of them. I haven't rebuilt the 18 like that I have in the garage but will get to it one of these days.
even the insulation on your unit is clean!
It won't be a quiet machine but it will clean and sanitize at 180 degrees for the final rinse.
Let me know if you want to have it heat throughout the cycles with the 1400 watts instead of 700. It is an easy conversion to do! A few parts and wires and it's a done deal!
Steve

Steve - does that machine heat to a delayed 140 degrees for the wash or not? I can't remember.

No such luck!

No Andrew, the 18's did not have the heat delay in any portion of any cycle until the last rinse and you would have to select the Sani Cycle for it to stop and delay and heat the water in the final rinse to 180.
with the 20 as our current daily driver, Iren is complaining that it takes too long to do the dishes because of the heat delay at the beginning of the cycles. I showed her how to use the low energy cycle and then hit the heavy wash or sani cycle button and it wont heat and the same would hold true on the other cycles if you hit low energy after the beginning of the longer cycles until you hear the timer advance past the heat delay detent. I will probably just install a small bypass switch under the lower panel so she doesnt have to go too crazy with it. She did ask for the "18" back so I may just throw that whole door with the harnesses back on it so she will be happier.
In reality, the cycles on the 20 even with the heat delay arent all that much longer than the 18. Coincidentally, the 18 only heated to 140 for the final sani rinse because the 180 degree thermostat went bad and I grabbed the first one I had that would fit and it was a 140 from a 21 series. so even if I reinstall the 18 innards, it will now take longer with the new thermostats from the 20 and that only heats to 172 by measurement(165 spec-ed tstat). SO she may still complain!
I cannot win.

Oh well, women....what can you do? Give her the new one that's out in the garage in the box. See what she thinks about that one.

I love my KDS-18. I use it as my "Days off machine". It cleans "Superbly".And I just love all the noises . The timer clicking, the drain solenoid clicking, the water "Roar" as it fills up, It's just the best. Good Luck and Congrats on finding that orphan. eddie

Have a Top Loading KitchenAid Portable for sale ? I'd love an Electra, or any other model with the Hydro Sweep Arm and the Lift Rack. It would almost complete my collection. (LOL) I have Big Blue already and she's running fine. Thanks

That is exactly what I'm hoping to find in order to replace the Maytag at my mom's old place. Maybe I need to start cruising behind Lowe's and HD for similar machines. They are out there, I know, and your find confirms it. I think I'll never want anything but a KA machine. I've been spoiled by the 22 model I've enjoyed for the past 18 years without any repairs or problems. The KA's are timeless and will fit in with any kitchen, but if people who are remodeling don't think so, let's not tell them!
