I have a 1948 Ironrite Ironer that I would like to refurbish. There was once a website at www.ironrite.com... that provided much useful information on these machines, but the website has disappeared. Does anyone know what kind of oil to use as gear oil for this machine? I saw that one other person had posted a message a couple of years ago regarding an Ironrite on this forum, but since the message is archived, I can't reply to it to ask them what they use in their ironrite. The message was

I wrote that post sometime ago. I did not realize that Ironrite.com had ceased to exist. I wonder why, it was very popular. The gal that did the site lived in Alaska. I will see what I can come up with. It was the Ironrite search that led me to applianceville-30 appliances ago!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had good success with regular household 3 in 1 oil in mine when I went through it. I used automotive brake cleaner to clean out the old oil in the gearbox and cut a new cork gasket. Then just added enough oil so it would splash up on the gears and the machine worked fine.

You may want to check out the link if you've not seen the movie. There is a Part Two, just do a search for Ironrite in the search box. The film is a real trip and shows proper operation of the machine.

Keep us posted on the rebuild. How much are you doing to the machine?

www.ironrite.com... is up and running again. It was down for a while for some reason. They are of great help with these classics!

What a coincidence---I just got an Ironrite Model#70. It needs a serious clean up-----and new castor wheels---the originals have become square. Fabric cord looks like brand new. Oil has leaked over part of the cabinet. This thread should help a lot with learning about this relic.
