Or this could happen to you!

I brought this lovely Maytag home this afternoon, gave it a bath and repaired the air-break in the fill system. It's in remarkable condition for it's age, the seller told me their grandmother moved in with them and this was her washer. Thanks Grandma, this washer is a tribute to your care and value of a penny! It runs perfectly and there's just something about the sound of Maytag churning away that is relaxing.

Model A 710
Serial # 566629 GG

The controls - I love that it has two speeds but probably will never use the gentle speed...

Since there is a lid switch and watching the machine is forbidden, we'll have to watch the dial move. (after all, there are three sixes in the serial number - who knows what horrors await under that lid!)

Don't drink that rinse water! Work rags always get two rinses.

The lint filter/dispenser is soaking in a bucket - as usual for those. It must have been in a soft-water house as there is no sign of hard water anywhere. Even the underside, belts and under her skirt is just clean as can be - I love finding them this way.

Except for the 1.5 minute deep rinse, this is a wonderful machine. Maybe the 1.5 minute spray rinse is supposed to make up for that...

Hee hee - I thought about putting a timer-switch in the timer motor line to extend that rinse. It seems to move the clothes in the water pretty well - and the spray rinse does seem to do a good job. Maybe they were on to something back in the early 80's, spin/spray gives better rinsing and then all you need to do is distribute the softener. Who knows what they were thinking?? We should do some real study on rinsing results and agitation time to see how they are related - or not. Perhaps it makes no difference at all.

Didn't CR say that all the low-water front loaders met minimum rinsing standards after the first rinse? Perhaps it all psychological and we're just throwing good water after nothing? ;-)

Nice machine! Thanks for the pics... I wouldn't have found this thread if you hadn't mentioned it somewhere in the Imperial forum (I forget where)...

That's interesting that FL's meet the rinse standards after just one... I still enjoy 3 or 4 though :)

Fabulous. Enjoy. Nothing like a "real" Maytag!

Ok so you will put a (*cough*) toggle switch in line with the timer motor to extend the spray-rinse.

How about a monetary contact switch (normally-open) feeding the cold water solenoid to add spray rinses WHENEVER YOU WANT TO........

Nice catch! I'm intrigued by that Maytag series. But I was wondering if there were perhaps models that had 4 speed combinations instead of 3. I sort of miss the Gentle - Fast option.

Greg - she sure is a beautiful Maytag.

Nothing better than the rhythmic hum of a 'Newton long-stroke' transmission washing away.....

Nice

Boy I wish I could find one like that -- I'd throw this new Whirltag I have out for sure.

4 speed combinations

I also like the gentle agitation/ fast spin option. I never thought that the high spin speed was all that hard on delicate clothes. And since they would be more likely line (air) dryed the more they are spun out the better.

The next model up (A810 - top of the line) had all four speed combinations. Plus a variable slide water level control. And a switch that I think allowed the soak to advance into the wash cycle.

Does anyone have any info on the "10" series line? I'm starting to forget some of the models. Was there a A610?

Ed

I'm thinking now that the A610 was a one speed machine with the 3 fabic selector buttons. And the A510 was the basic fabric matic BOL extra large capacity machine.

Would love to see a book from this line.

I don't know, Greg... Put a substantial load in there, then watch the rinse. When you see BARELY ONE turnover, you may have different thoughts...

Big load of towels washing now...we're about to find out!

Five big, thick bath towels and a smaller bath-mat. Fresh Start detergent - notorious for sudsing in the rinse with soft water.

I'll post a picture in a bit.

Absolutely gorgeous!!

Early 80's model for sure. The ivory buttons instantly give that away.

One trick I always do to get better rollover for those 90 second rinses (or better rollover for bigger items like comforters) is to adjust the water level up to where it's level with the bottom of the filter/top of the agitator.

I talked one of buddy's into getting a mint (and I mean MINT!!!!) LA810/LDE810 (TOL) set a couple of months ago. The little old lady used the set only a couple of years and passed away. The set was stored unused for over 20 years. I'll have to go over and take a few pics and post them up. He absolutely LOVES them!

A friend of mine was storing his Maytag in my attic. I had an upstairs apartment at the time. That was exactly like this one. I sold it for him to a friend at work for $50.00 then not more than 6 months later moved into this house. Damn, I wish I would have kept it!

When one gets rid of something they haven't used in years, the need for it comes around real quick.

I have a load of fancy & antique glassware for my mythical "china cabinet". Haven't had one ever. Wait. will be givin tthe stuff away and the next house *BOOM* wil have a formal dining room with space for one. *LOL*

(This is NOT an excuse to hoard and gather!)

Murphy's law.

Nice washer and a great find. My parents had a Maytag 510 when I was in my teens in the early 80's. My aunt has the washer now and its still going. Yeah it had the blue tub and 3 temp selections and 3 cycles Regular, Perm press and Delicate Fabric Matic. We also had the DE710 dryer. The dryer was Ok but I didnt like being stuck with no time dry. It forced one to use either Regular, Perm Press, Wrinkle Release and Air. The dryness setting was Dry and More Dry. No damp button. Both worked well and like I said are still going strong.
This past weekend I fixed a DG 410 dryer. The belt broke so I changed it out for a couple of friends of ours. Now the dryer purrs like a kitten and dries fast. I couldnt get over how well it dry but it left the load a tad too warm for my taste at the end of the cycle. Still everything came out soft and fluffy.
Getting back to the 510 washer. When we got it it didnt have a softener dispenser so I changed that out with a filter that had one. I didnt need the bleach dispenser since I dont use it..I am an Oxygen Bleach man here ala Clorox 2. That washer is a workhorse and my 613 washer is a good machine. I have not used it in almost a year since I got the Mieles. One thing I cant move the washer since its a ton. I will have to invest in an appliance truck for my basement.

my family still has our LA510. It's been a workhorse since 1983 for our family of five. Still going strong.
Had the bleach cup and dampers replaced about 10 years ago, that was it for repairs.

Talk about a family stalwart. the matching dryer died in 2003, so we replaced it with a Neptune electronic console dryer. Another fantastic machine.
