I need to replace the "dog ears" in the top part of the agitator since they have begun to skip. I have read previous threads about removing the agitator which mention a nut that has to be unscrewed after removing the dispenser and the protective cover from the top of the agitator. As you can see from the attached photo, once those are removed, there is no visible nut to loosen, just another plastic insert which, according to the diagram (see link below), is the spring retainer.
Can anyone help me figure this out, please?

Your looking right at the screw that you need to remove to get it out. Your clutch dogs look fine to me.

Removing Agitator

 I guess that it's that plastic insert that screws on to the shaft. Now, I have to figure out how to get into that square shaped hole in the "screw" to turn it without damaging it. By the way, the bright metal spot you see on the photo in the center is the shaft and it is at least one inch below the top of that plastic insert/screw.
If the "dogs" are not the cause of the skipping of the agitator, what else could it be? Do the teeth on the inside of the agitator get worn out? They look OK to me.

If you look closely in the gap by the teeth, you can see the dogs themselves. They look kind of worn.
I think all you need to do is to take out that center bolt and pull up on the agitator for it all to come out. Then lift up on the plastic plate with the indentations on it to get access to the dogs themselves.
When replacing them, be sure to apply some of the grease that is supplied with the replacement dogs.

 I agree with you that the dog ears are worn; I can see one in particular that is definitely "toothless."
My problem is that in order to get to the bolt, I have to remove the spring loaded assembly that contains the "dogs' and that is where I run into a wall. There must be a way to remove that assembly. Look at the link I included below that shows the blown up diagram. The bolt and washer, assembly 2, is under the parts #19 and 22 and I can't figure out how to remove those.

You'll

 need a 1/2 ratchet wrench with an extension. The extension fits right into the cam.

 I followed all the prompts and after removing the plastic cam with the 1/2" socket wrench extension, I lifted the upper agitator and removed the dog ear assembly. The whole replacement took no more than ten minutes.
The old dog ears were badly worn after 6 years of use.
All your suggestions made this easy.

Your replacement dogs should last longer than that. I have noticed with appliance parts the replacement parts usually last a lot longer than the original OEM parts do.
One thing that wore out our dogs was that my wife used the top half of the agitator to "agitate" the water to disolve the detergent before the clothes were put in the washer. I am positive that put extra wear on those dogs.

next time just pour yourself about 12 ounces of 5 minute epoxy down the hatch onto those wore out dogs. Does the trick everytime.lol
