David,
cheers mate for the welcome comments it really does feel like luck is on our side of late but it helps when good mates look out for you too and give a helping hand.

The dryer does roar yes but then it wouldnt be a Hotpoint if it didnt.

This model is quite rare anyways with it being the Best/Super buy basic one, most folk went for the 4 button version as these seem to come up on ebay more often.

This suits me just fine as I dont really take interest in anything but the 9 basic cycles a washer can do and never really select option buttons however if I had the Liberator I just wouldnt be able to resist the TOL model with its 2 glistening purple dials.

Darren cheers for the comments its nice to have something so rare especially when we have put the hard work into it to get it back to new. Somehow so much nicer than buying "off the peg" restored/reconditioned ones.

I don't actually know how to tell how old my 18580 is, can you help at all?

Absolutely fantastic, what a testament to made in Great Briton, built to last, why cant we have stuff built to last any more, we should ask Hotpoint to produce re-runs of the liberators and the 18 series. I would be first in line to order. I want one..

Cheers Lee,

They are way superior to what is badged up as Hotpoint these days but thats what makes them so special I guess.

Just explained to Matty why these are so rare to find due to the lack of features one in particular I forgot to mention, no Fabric Softener Dispenser.

Probably a good thing for me being a FS junkie - you should of seen Mikes face yesterday when I just open and poured a good glugg of Comfort Tropical into the Servis Starlight although I did use half the reccommended dose of vintage Wisk Liquid.

Tumble dryers

electron1100's profile picture
Argghhh you lads :-).......
Amazing absolutely amazing...I like it all.

That tumble dryer was the very first dryer i ever bought, i had that my first automatic washer which was an Electra (Zanussi) which spun at 470 rpm, I lived in an upstairs converted flat and that tumble dryer was on for hours, I also remember taking out sheets etc and reloading them becuase they used to end up in a ball as it rotated in one direction only also the droning from the motor went right through the flat (suspended floors), it annoyed the old lady downstairs so i agreed to not use it at night.

But to see it again and of course with its matching washer is great........well done again, i am pleased for you both.

(and please note that I have not even metioned the strawberry blond)

Its my turn tonight!

Thanks guys for all the nice words written. Its really nice to be able to share our 'luck' with people.

Our luck is to have a great mate over in Cardiff who, not only found the machine, but stored it for us, brought it up to us in Crewe and helped us rebuild it.
Although he isnt a member of the forum - yet! - he does keep a close eye on what goes on here, so will read this...

you are a superb friend and generous to the nth degree! Thanks for helping us rebuild our Bradford find (the 95620) and for finding and dealing with the 18361. All power to your elbow mate.

I am so glad that i stumbled across that old link to one of your ebay purchases!

Thankyou.

How do David. I will try and post a vid, either tonight or tomorrow, of the final rinse distribute and 800 spin. The file is a bit big, so will probably take all evening to load up on my antique computer and crappy performance wifi broadband - kindly!!!! supplied by my landlord Rigsby!
I can also confirm that the dryers are loud - especially this one as it needs new bearings, for which an order will be placed soon.

Hi Darren. Hope you are fine and glad you are enjoying the thread. Will be posting some more of the nitty gritty restoration pics very soon.

Hi Ingemar. Cheers for your comment, although what looks like the door handle is in fact the hinge cover. Believe me though, you arent the first person to make this mistake by any means. The number of Liberator (the purple version) and 18xxx series machines you used to see, in the 1980s UK, with that hinge cover missing was uncountable. They do look just like big door releases and people used to break them off as they fought to open the door, not noticing that straight in front of them was a door release button.

next some more pics!

Hi Matt. agree with you wholeheartedly - they aint bad lookers!
always stuck out a bit in kitchens due to the bigger than usual gap betwen the top of the machine and the bottom of the worksurface, but then Hotpoint sold enough of their short n' squatt-uns, so people obviously didnt mind too much.

Hi Zachary. Brought memories of my mothers 95452 flooding back. Identical pattern of spin cycle to my mothers machine, whereas the 95620 stopped stationary in between spins and redistribution.
Memories of a machine that served my family well for just short of 20 years with little fuss. If it had gone on for two more years, it would now be in mine and robs collection and it really pains me that it isnt.

Hiya Rob.
I only discovered the secret of the Hotpoint dating process a couple of weeks ago and post an image of the spreadsheet i put together below.
I have only dealt with the 70s through to early 1990s, as i know neither when they introduced the system nor whether they still use it.
Either way, you look on the information panel on the rear of the machine. If the serial number is written like mine and robs machine, take the first two digits. On older machines the two digits are found in a seperate box to the right of the serial number, usually with the word 'code' written above.

This two digit number refers to a month and year, which you can uncode by using the table below. Mine and Robs machine is '59' which, you have to know the rough time of manufacture, dates it to November 1982.

Things are a bit wishy washy between 95 and 02, as hotpoint didnt use some of these numbers and i cant remember which ones they were.

I am pretty sure that the table below is accurate, as far as it goes, so date away people.

Cheers
paul

Wonderful stuff! That last pic was such a tease! I have great memories of these machines! We owned 2 18371 models, the first was ours replaced by the 9534 then when that was temporarily out of action (as things were to tight to repair it), my grandparents gave us their identical model and bought an aquarius 1200 99...eeh its late i forget, i'll back to you on that. And annoyingly that has just died and my grandma said "ooh i never thought to ask you if you'd want it dear!" 13years!!!!!!!!!!!! i've waited 13 years for that machine! lol!

Paul & rob, does this just the one water level throughout? I remember mine filling just up the door an inche or two and that was about it.

Heres a pic i found on ebay of the same machine i had!

Hi Darren.

So I am not the only one to have a Hotpoint 'Next Generation' snaffled from beneath my fingers! You lost a washer-dryer and I had a 1986 first series 9530 - oh the agony of it all. Bloody annoying eh!

Unlike you, I cant remember any of my family members having the later 18-series machines - friends had them though. My family had Liberators (1828's - no two button or variables), bought in the mid to late 70s, which saw them through to the New and Next Generations.

The fact that the basic mechanics of the Liberator saw service for 20 years, through the 18- series, New and Next Gens through to the WM's, is a testament to what a sound design the machines were. Well done Hotpoint!!!

Paul

Hi Lee.

Indeed, it has crossed my mind too that hotpoint should do a rerun of the Liberator design.
What fun that would be - would have to have the old superior build quality though or else it just wouldnt be right.

Unfortunately, with the story about the disposal of their own private historical collection (when Merloni moved in), it'll never happen.
We can but dream - plus we have our memories.

Paul

Here you go Darren

The machine had some quite major internal restoration (and will need some more in the medium term) as it unfortunately suffers from the bane of enamel tubs - the dreaded rust, with the accompanyment of the good old leaks!!!!

We were aware that it had these issues as it had quickly been examined back down in Cardiff, so we knew that it needed things doing to it, although its safe to say that just quite how heavy a rebuild it would be came as a surprise to me and Rob.

This was how the machine looked, the first time we saw it in the flesh...

but a load of elbow grease from Rob produced quite a radical change in appearance (this was actually after the drum had received some experimental repair work and had been resealed - hence the shinyness around, what we asume is, the suds breaker bar...

Post# 299825 , Reply# 41   8/28/2008 at 14:00 (5,713 days old) by matchboxpaul (U.K)

The drum was all that needed doing to the machine.
It had had a quick spin test, back in Cardiff, a few months before, so we knew that it was capable of operation.

In fact the bearings are totally sound, with no movement or hint of rumble, and the motor has some of the cleanest windings that Rob and our mate have ever seen.

As such, the drum and backplate were reattached and water tested, via a watering can.
Some tinkering later, the machine was placed on 'the carpet' to be put back together...

Whils the other guys dealt with the mechanical side of things, I dealt with the cleaning and polishing.

The machine had a general application of grime and grubbery about it.
As it was taken apart, I gave each panel a cleanup, leaving the outer cabinet sides and lid till last.

The front panel cleaned up to 98% factory fresh immaculate, with no damage, dings or rust on either the front or, rather surprisingly, the back.....

that is such a nice example, the inner drum is pretty good aswell, all my Hoovers have had similar rust problems, de-rust and epoxy resin soon sorts that out.

it just so nice to see all this work and the excellent end result.

So again well done Rob & Paul excellent work and results

Hi Gary.

Cheers for the kind words - yep, we used epoxy (I think it was that anyway) but, in the medium term, may try something a little harder.
Has sorted the machine on a temporary basis kind of thing.

Cheers
Paul

re the dryer - yep you did see the matching (kind of) dryer. I say kind of because the D6074 dryer had the same coloured facia as the A3108 electronic 800. The matching dryer for the A3110/A3112 and A3114 was the D6096 Creaseguard machine, which had the same brown styling and looked really rather good!
The picture of the D6074 can be found on the 95620 restoration thread.

p.s below is the machine that started it all off - the Hotpoint 1850 Liberator De Luxe

Just noticed that i span a yarn about deciphering the age on older machines!

The number to the right of the serial number, in a box with code written above it, is for the version of that particular model and is not the month/year number.

The month year number is after the forward slash of the serial number.

Mine and Rob's Liberator dryer is month/year code 87, which dates it to March 1977.

Sorry for causing any confusion.
Paul

Really fantastic work guys - the washer looks like new...amazing! Love the angled side-by-side shot - classic Hotpoint brochure...can just see the one now, with the 1464 twin tub - something like the pic attached from the 1983 Superbuy range

Your real thing is much, much cooler though... :-)

Hey, well done on the restoration! Love those Hotpoints, classy is too weak of a word to describe them! I remember my mum's friends mum having the 4 button version, nice machine but quite scary to watch as a 5 year old!

Love the miniature programme guide, as well as the Ariel/BBC Grandstand style atom on the powder drawer! Classic Hotpoint.

Jon

What a lovely duo these Hotpoint's are, they almost look like new lol. Considering they're the same age as Channel 4 and Countdown (Nov 1982)

My Auntie had the 4 button version of this machine with 1000RPM spin, but I used to be a bit scared of it, especially when it went into spin.

But still, they look great. Hope it'll last for many years to come lol.

Hi Paul & Rob, yes right, now I have seen that the "door handle" is in fact the hinge cover, and that it's a door release botton. (like for Candy machines)
I've noticed that this washer have two fill connections (cold & hot) and that the outer drum is made like those in old Indesit (you can take out the inner drum from the rear) The most strange think is that the motor is on the upper side.
Very interesting !!!
Bye, Ingemar

Just one question please. I've seen that you have an old Wisk
detergent. I didn't know that was sold also in G.B. Tell me please something more. :) thanks
Ingemar

Ingemar

Wisk was sold in the UK 1988 - 1993 in its destinctive red and yellow bottle.

It was a semi budget liquid detergent that boasted excellent grease removal and ingrained dirt digesters but protected colours IIRC.

I have the advert somewhere so il dig it out and scan it in when I can.

My mother used to use it occasionally as a change from her regular Ariel but it used to create such a harsh rash on my brothers backside from the using it to wash his nappies.

With the advent of Radion - another Lever bros detergent at budget level to compete with it lost popularity I guess (what it had anyway) and Radion superceeded it.

Some of the detergent collection on top the stacked Hotpoints.

Absolutely fantastic tread, well don. I noticed that someone pointed out that the Hotpoint has the motor at the top, dose any one know if any other manufactures do this, as it’s a great aide to servicing and repairing Hotpoint’s so the design team were thinking of the repair man from start to end.

Hotpoint are the best, well used to be!!

I LOVED wisk liquid, the smell was heavenly!!! My Mum used to be a tester for lever bros which meant we got new products before they hit the shelves, I remember she had wisk cold wash liquid to try but hated it in her supertwin, it never hit the shops hasten to add.

Congrats on the Hotpoint, a great machine, such a pity they don't make them like that now. They really did wash well and in a short time.

Cheers Alan, David, Jon, Paul for the comments - really glad you are still enjoying the thread.

Ingemar and Lee.....the placing of the motor on the top side of the drum does indeed make for easier servicing. Whenever my dad had to replace the brushes of my parents 95452, he always commented on the much better design, over the matchbox hoover, of having that motor on top.
With the Matchbox, because of the tight space in their kitchen, it always had to be totally unplumbed so it could be moved to a place where you could lie flat before anything could be done with it.
The New Gen was simply pulled out at an angle, the lid removed and ta-da! Hey presto, the motor there ready and waiting for you.
I did break the news to him that the motor on their Merloni Hotpoint WF740 is now down below - frown and sigh resulted!!!!

Anyways, it took over two hours to load up - ancient computer and poor broadband set-up (cheers Rigsby) - but here is the vid I promised last night.
You catch the tail end tumble of the final rinse - then distribute - the two spins at 500 and the final at 800rpm.

Enjoy!
Paul

Believe it or not, mine has the same back as yours!

Hi Rob and Paul

Great thread, and great restoration. I love these machines and it's interesting to see that this machine has a profile spin! I think this was a better system than mine.

Believe it or not my machine has a replacement back cover which has the same model number as yours on it! The code is 63 (March 83). So this will now mean I will probably never know how old my machine is. It has 3 support legs so I know it pre dates 81.

Anyway happy washing! Here is pic of mine again.

Eh up Rob.

Glad that the 18580 is still going strong.
Looks real good.

You pre-empted me a little in that I was going to suggest throwing this thread open to all 18-series washers and 17-series dryers (including the original Liberators) - try and get as much imagery of these great machines as possible.

I'll start the ball rolling with the machine from the same series as RobM's and upon which mine and Rob's 18361 is based on.........

The Hotpoint 18340 Super Electronic....

Thought I d post some of the days other festivities.

Making a Hotpoint Raspberry Mousse - was so tempted to serve it in a spare Purple Liberator Bowl of ours.

Recipe as follows.

It sounds an awful concoction buy my Great Gran made this occasisionally and I have a fondness for the odd taste.

1 large tin of Ideal Milk, Evap, Carnation
1 Tablet of jelly - your choice of flavour.

Whisk the Evap in a mixer until it is as stiff as you can get it - it triples quadruples in size and becomes all foamy.

Melt the jelly in the microwave with 1 tablespoon of water until melted.

Whisk into the frothy Milk and when evenly mixed pour into a bowl and chill until cold and set.

Serve!

Haha! My Dad made that mousse when i was younger! He called it "Orange Fluff" with orange jelly.

His method was just melt the jelly in microwave, add to milk and whisk. I tried it and it was a bit flat. I'll try your great grans' way next time i make it.

Forgot to mention one minor/major detail that was quite odd.

When all the fettling had been done we were just about to litterally at that precise second place the dial back onto the machine after everything else had been done and the machine was restored I caught a tune coming from the radio which was kinda freaky.

This actual Hotpoint model was the machine RIA had in one of the series of Butterflies.....

The song that the local station (Signal 1 102.6fm) played was from 1982.

the song...... Rio, Duran Duran.

Ria, Rio, 1982......

Go figure LOL!

Nice work guys, the pair looked and sounded just like they where on the showroom floor all those years ago....I often wonder if this series of machines had had a solid metal backpanel instead of the polyplastic one, would they have lasted longer!!!, a simple, easy to use machine, using all the HLCC programmes of the day, the detergent dispenser was so simple & smooth sided that build up of crud wasnt an issue!!! and Ohhhh that Hotpoint whooooshhhhh!!!!

Nowthen Rob, just cut back on that slick of conditioner!!! on the other hand the excess should oil that machine forever!!!

Paul, its gonna cost you!! dont forget I have the only photos of you two together + machines!!!! highest bidder seems the pics!!!...Lol

Cheers, Mike
