A Bauknecht, according to Louis' scans, dating to the late 70's or early 80's. Someone must have privately imported this. Just bought this off Craigslist. 220 Volt, cold water intake only.

Great machine Edward

as a nipper, I always loved these machines. The styling looks really smart (in my opinion) and I am on the lookout for one of them in the UK.

c'mon Ebay UK - work your magic!

Cheers for posting the pic.

220V-60 Hz or 220V-50 Hz?

Eddy, have you checked the rating plate to verify if this is a 60 Hz or 50 Hz unit?

Eddy's model WA709SC is almost similar to the WA712SC in this brochure. The only difference would be the 95 degrees button which was added later for energy efficiency reasons. The highest temperature that you could choose on the timer was 60*C, for a boil wash you would have to especially push the 95 button. It was Bauknecht's alternative for the "E" buttons that appeared on lots of machines.

The TRA350 and TRA410 are dryers based on Zanussi models. The TRA350 is also similar to the Speed Queen compact dryer that you can see in pictures of the Speed Queen twintub. This dryer however has a plastic see though door while the Speed Queen had a solid square door.

Those are wonderful scans. I checked on the hz rating like Emilio asked of my machine and it says 60 hz which surprised me. Maybe this model was made for export? Yet there is no English at all on it and all the rating info is in German. The plug also has been modified with one that fits the North American 220V outlet.

Jon: I think I caught the front loader fever from you. I have 5 now including an old Neptune. Oddly enough I've been dreaming of boots lately ;-))

Perhaps your machine was made for the South American market. Some countries have rather big German communities, perhaps the machine was built for that market. And it might have come to Canada when the owner moved there. Just speculations though, but it's a possibility.

Westinghouse in Oz??

I seem to rememember a machine that looked very similar in Australia in the seventies. In particular, the control dial with the coloured program progress indications visible from the front. Westinghouse? Can anyone confirm?

We also had Simpson dishwashers in late 70's that were made in Germany (Bosch?), so having a machine with a familiar "local" brand that came from overseas was starting to happen even back then.

Bosch Simpson

That is a great looking machine.

Michael's mother has a Simpson Bosch from 76 that has never been used. It has a plastic tub and is most unlike any Australian Dishwasher from that era.

Its doorseals are all crumbley, and the parts are incredibley expensive. One day I might get around to it.

What a great catch ! What is the spinspeed 500 or 850 rpm ? Rpm would perhaps read Upm on the German rating plate.

We have had a Bauknecht dishwasher of that time period and a dryer that looked like the TRA 771, but our washer was a Miele, so I can`t wait to hear everything about the programes.
My Mom swore by Bauknecht because she loved the the simplicity and the prices were affordabel.

It has a rather slow spin speed of 500 upm. But it's a very fun machine to watch. I just put the clothes in the Miele afterwards for a 1600 spin ;-)

Thanks for posting the brochure Louis.

Absolutely great to see a fleet on old Bauknechts - brought back loads of childhood memories of these machines.
My Junior 1 (aged 7) school teacher had one of these machines - cant remember which one it was though.

The style ran for a pretty long time, being around in the late 70s.
They were initially sold under the manufacturer name 'Beekay' in the UK - anyone any idea what that was about?
Below is the Beekay WA760 from 1979....

I will be scanning ebay for one of my own!

We've moved to Burnaby now, near Canada Way and Imperial. Guess I should update my profile. Only 5 minutes from where we used to be on 10th Ave. My sister lived in an apt on Agnes St for years.

some of my funnest years living there. While I worked full time I occasionally "helped with the laundry" at the old NuWest for the queens of steam (Sweaty Betty and Denise) when some of the staff failed to show. Don't suppose you took your laundry there now did ya LOL

I think my Husqvarna Prince 110S dryer is the same as the Bauknecht TRA782. Mine is from August 1977!

Bauknecht at that time was still a reliable brand I guess. Later the problems must have started, nowadays Bauknecht has a bad name, too many people are having problems with them. I found it rather interesting to see that the Whirlpool Proline 6kg model sold in the UK is actually a Bauknecht.

Interesting that Bauknecht was sold as Beekay in the UK. Just an assumption, but I guess Bauknecht is hard to pronounce for the British. So they must have thought BK or Beekay was easier to use.

That Husqvarna dryer is indeed a Bauknecht. I rememeber seeing a Husqvarna/Bauknecht set once in an interior magazine. IIRC Husqvarna once was an independent brand? In the end they ended up as part of the Electrolux concern as much other brands.

Bauknecht was always a strong player in the German market - not the same exalted quality (and price) and Miele, but always far easier to use and with more useful features than the Bosch, Siemens, Constructa group.
In quality, they were somewhere between AEG and Siemens. Which is still 1000X better than anything built nowadays.
I've taken a lot of shit for saying it, but it's true none the less: Whirlpool killed this wonderful brand's reputation. The Bauknecht of today is, sadly, nothing at all like what you have there.
By the by, replacement parts for many components can be sourced at regular German parts houses or using industry standard components - Bauknecht used a lot of AEG and Siemens parts, thank goodness.

It's a pity indeed that the Bauknecht quality has gone so downward, the brand really deserved a better fate. Overhere the Bauknecht BIG (similar to the Whirlpool Duet etc.) was recently on sale. It was only €699.-, a real bargain. I would have been interested if the dryer would have been available here too, but apparently Bauknecht decided not to sell it on the European continent. Probably too expensive. I would have loved to give it a try for a while.

I didn't know Bauknecht used AEG and Siemens parts. But they do have a history of borrowing from other brands like they did with the boil wash feature from Constructa.

Their slogan in the Netherlands used to be: Bauknecht weet wat vrouwen wensen (Bauknecht knows what women wish / Bauknecht weiss was Frauen wünschen).

"BIG" dryers

mrboilwash's profile picture
My guess is we won`t see a maching Bauknecht BIG dryer in Europe, just because they might require 400V three phase current. It is truly a shame what Whirlpool did to the brand.

Strangely enough the big 10kg dryers are sold by Whirlpool in the UK. They run on 230V and take 4600 Watts. Apparently Whirlpool considers the Channel a big barrier.

Hi all

My mother had 2 Bauknechts between 1989 - 1994 and 1994 - 1998. The first one was a 1000rpm model and it was so solid, it did not move a millimetre when spinning. In 1994 we moved house and I decided to by her a new washer (for me really LOL!).

First I went for a Miele W916 top of the range at the time and over £1000. Unfortunately, it vibrated (more than the Bauknecht) I tried everything, maybe we had just been unlucky because my current Miele does not shake at all.

Next I went for the Asko top of the range 1500rpm. Wasn't as good as I thought and the module blew 2 weeks later.

My mother decided she wanted another Bauknecht. No nonsense dials and stable. It was about £500 and was infact better than the previous machines. The old Bauknecnt had been sold btw.

It only semi broke down because a bra underwire got caught in it and in removing it we could not get it back together as well and it shuddered on 1200. It went to a friend and lasted for many years. My mum had my Sensor 1996 AEG and then was replaced by a premier novo Miele in 2000 which is great.

So Bauknecht were great! Brush motors a tad noisy but very stable and reliable. Here is my mother's machine.

Rob

Oh! That is almost the same model as my brother and SIL had. It was a horror machine, had three repairs in the first year and some more after that. After five year it was not working again and the repair was supposed to be €450.-. They replaced it with an AEG and swore never to buy a Bauknecht product again.

Hi Louis

It just goes to show how luck can feature. Our ones were good and reliable. You will see from my writings, however, that the Miele 916 was awful, which you would never expect from Miele. Maybe it was made on a Friday night when they all wanted to get home in the factory LOL!

I agree Rob, I never had bad experiences with Miele, but I know other people have. Funny that in English you say it's made on a Monday. Overhere in the Netherlands we call it a machine made on a Monday. Probably because people still have their mind set on the weekend. LOL
