2 small problems: 1. The cycle dial knob won't let me push it in to stop the washer until the dial reaches "OFF" on its own. Was this normal on the early 806's? 2. When I let the machine soak for a couple of hours and then tried to spin out the water(from a cold start) the tub twirled silently for a couple of seconds then stopped and smoke started coming up from below. I am hoping/assuming that the belt was burning. This only happened once but why? At least the machine made me a suds cupcake later on:

The 502 looks like it's in great condition but it isn't working; it fills to overflowing and never starts agitation. I suspect a damaged/flawed pressure fill switch. Can any of you Tag Hags tell me how to remove the top of this machine? The machine is obviously the reverse of the Maytags I'm used to; the back comes off very easily revealing the motor and pump in their usual configurations, only oriented to this machine's back, rather than removable front. The top seems permanent and at this point I'm assuming it only comes off with the entire cabinet, from the base. I'd thought I'd check with the Counsel of Elders first. Oh, and that other machine lying on its back in the truck?

"With Maytags, it all happens from the front." Phil, trust me, on this one, the A502, it all happens from the back. Only I don't see any screws underneath the top to release it from the cabinet which wraps around the front and is totally continuous with the sides. "What's all the grass and weeds growing up in your "laundry room"" I'm creating my own little Aberdeen Farm right here in Stony Creek...and the neighbors are THRILLED! | ||

Since the outer cabinet of the highlander/super highlander series does not have a removeable front - all the mechanicals, as Greg stated, are rotated 180 degrees to the rear. Otherwise the only way to service the machine would have been to totally remove the outer cabinet. We should be so fortunate that there were smart engineers that worked at Maytag ;-) Ben | ||

OOps!
Well, I went ahead and tried so carefully to remove the cabinet after disconnecting the leads to the motor and the inlet solenoids only to tear the fill flume at the top of the tub. Oh well. I'm still impressed with how easily these Maytags come apart for servicing and how independent each component remains even though they all work together. I'm more convinced that Maytag engineers and designers were geniuses and artists. Just as I suspected, the rubber tube to the pressure diaphragm is snapped in three:

But jeez I'm glad to have this classic Tag! The agitator and tub are in great condition but I'll have to use my patented "boiling turban of terror" trick to lift this beauty up and out so I can get to the innards. Thanks for all your congrats and I'll post more as I go. My back yard is beginning to look like the dumpster behind Best Buy and my neighbors are wondering what is wrong with me. Good thing my back-door neighbors have had the prize for worst yard for the last ten years. Serves 'em right.
