Hey Gang,

In the midst of working on the house, I've been tinkering with the WO-65 here and there for the last month or so. I've been wrestling with the water bellows snap ring for the last few weeks and was finally able to get it to 'snap' together by luck today. Here are a few photos of what the problem was, and I threw together a really quick YouTube video as well. No crazy announcement - just wanted to let those who remember know that it was taken care of.

Top off, ready to dive in.

okay - the tub nut.

I didn't have the 1 1/2 in special wrench to get it off.

What to use?

Robert suggested this guy.

When I ordered it from Grainger, I had NO idea how large it would be. But it just clears the tub and worked out great!

Tub out. Uh oh, the seal assembly nut just wasn't even finger tight - it was loose again? With the assembly off - does anyone see a problem with the location of this washer?

Those who wondered where the locating tang was - are correct! Not sure exactly how or where this happened along the road, but the tang is supposed to locate within the washer. This way when torqued down, it is certain to stay in place, but also keep the mechanical seal assembly in place too.

All put back together and cleaned up. Per the re-operating manual, I coated the three bottom threads of the seal nut with Permatex No. 2 (actually, it is Permatex PN 80016)

In this shot, you see the seal assembly, in place. I've thrown the tub nut, and copper washer for reference. The tub would go between the washer, and the seal.

Make sure to get the seal assembly REALLY TIGHT!!

I forgot my camera during the rest of the assembly - but here is a YouTube video of the finished repair.

For those live water action fans - this is sure to impress! ;-) lol j/k

Enjoy,

Ben

(BTW - the Grainger item number for the Proto USN324 slugging wrench is a 1APM9)

Great storyline and pics! This is exactly what we need more of for successful future repair jobs among club members.

The spin portion of the clip truly shows just how quickly a unimatic can throw out a full tub of water. I counted 7 seconds. Very impressive!

Bravo!!

Great job Ben!
If you don't have that pesky little bellows ring tool------ a worm-gear clamp will make things a lot easier!

More good Unimatic fun!

Hopefully the tang will hold onto the washer and all will last for years now!

YAY!!! Ben, what a great job you did on that machine. Now that is what I call live water!!! The way washing should be. It always is amazing to me to see how fast that machine drains!! WOW Thanks for taking the time to make the video and share it with us. Terry

They certainly can, but after trying out three different clamps, I’m not sure if it was user error after two weeks of trying – or just my luck.

So – which one do you guys think made the final “CLICK” of the snap ring happen?

No 1 - the beefy American made jobber
No 2 - the Chinese made clamp
No 3 - the Chinese made three way clamp

Number 1 is too big, number 3 is too complicated... I say number 2!

I would say "B"

If you need to use snap ring pliers again, let me know. I could let you borrow mine. I can mail it to you, and you can mail it back when you are done. (unless "B" worked very well for you)

Great job on the Unimatic!! Glad to see you have it up and running again!

man, I couldn't fool anyone, could I? ;-)

It certainly was 2/B - the cheep Chinese 4" clamp. That was the first clamp I tried and tried, and tried I did with a few expletives here and there! Then I went for the big guy - and the pads were to large and kept slipping off the ring. And the three way guys? lol - a joke. Too small anyway.

Thanks again guys, it certainly is fun. One of these days I'll have to open up the basement for everyone to come down and watch some wash!

(Jed - that pan is the filter pan for a Speed Queen. I'll post more about that in a future thread)

A wash-in?!? at Ben's?!? That would be a GREAT idea!!! You should seriously plan on it.
