56 GE Combo - desperate to find someone to fix a timer motor |

I am getting nowhere trying to find someone who might be able to repair the timer motor from my 56 GE washer/dryer combo. Places that had done this sort of work in the past no longer seem to be interested - I've tried clock repair places both locally and on-line and I'm still striking out... I am launching this general appeal - if anyone knows of a person or company that can do this sort of work, please let me know. I'll really go out on a limb and ask if anyone hears of a 55 or 56 GE washer/dryer combo coming up for sale, please let me know also. I've given up on trying to get the dryer part of the unit working (the thermostat for the drying function is shot), but I was really hoping I could get at least the washer part running by the time I install the rest of the kitchen centre.. Here's a photo of the washer (with the rest of the set when I first got it), just in case you have seen one like it somewhere!

Paul, can you post a picture of the front & back of the timer motor you have? There should be some stamped ID on the motor, that would helpful as well. Finding a timer motor is probably going to be more likely than the whole machine, knock on wood. I have no idea what motor was in that machine, but it may be similar to ones GE sourced for other washer models. | ||

Photos of the timer motor
Here's some photos of the motor - it was made by the Ingraham Company - I can't find a model number or part number anywhere, but I know for sure it was made in 1955! The irony of it all is that the dishwasher timer has the exact same motor and it works like a charm. Front and back pictures to follow. Thanks for your help!!

Wether they use a CW or CCW motor all depends on the amount of gears between the dial and motor and the direction the dial turns in. Is the dial above the console and pointing to stationary painted marks or is the dial clear with painted marks on it that rotate over a painted stationary pointer? Bendix waffled with these designs every year with their Combos, dryer timer motors are a nightmare for BendixCombos! | ||

Guy, The place in Cambridge gave me a flat out 'get lost' saying they don't service anything older than 15 years! I was very disappointed because when the first contacted Robert they sounded as if they would repair just about anything! I have been sent the number of Midwest Timer (thanks again, Bob!!) and I'll see what they have to say... Jon, The dial on this one is clear with the painted marks rotating over the stationary dial underneath. Just curious again, Bendix made or was allied with Philco for their combination washer/dryers weren't they? Did they use a completely timed dry cycle or was it like the GE - the timer would stop and a thermostat would kick in until it hit it's high limit, then the timer would start again. I am wondering if another manufacturer's dryer thermostats might help me out; the one in my GE, as I mentioned before, is also shot to hell... | ||

Have you tried searching for synchronous clock motors in google? You can't really "fix" that timer motor, it has to be completely rewound and I wish you good luck finding someone who will still do that. I think we are looking at the future here and our key to keeping these machines going is learning to fix the timers and escapements ourselves plus finding modern replacements for the timer motors. | ||

I have tried clock motors, but not synchronous clock motors - thanks for the tip, Robert! You hit the nail on the head - learning to fix timers and other parts ourselves will be the best way to keep our collection machines going strong. I have dreams of telling my boss to "take this job..." and enrolling in a techinical school to learn the intricacies of electic motors from A to Z! | ||
