A few days ago I saw the KDS-17A in a freecycle post. The night I went to pick it up, I also happen to come across the KDS-18 and the KDS-20 behind an appliance store. I couldn't just let them go to the crusher.

They certainly look great with the fall leaves surrounding them.

I certainly don't need any of them. The 17 is in beautiful shape. Came from a home in a up-class 70's neighborhood. Was installed in November of 1974. The previous owner found the date that someone penciled on the kick plate. It was very nice of Eric and Lindsay to think that someone might want the 17, instead of taking it to the dump! I asked what they replaced it with. They mentioned a brand new KitchenAid, because this was such a great dishwasher. I was humbled that a couple around my age would have a positive perception of a machine way older than us.

The 18 and 20 certainly are parts machines - both are a mess.

With the fall season here - I couldn't think of anything more harvest like. Well, at least in Applianceville.

Love'em or hate'em - they certainly are pretty machines.

Wow. I'm loving that KDS-18 as I need so bad to get mine back on line. I want to replace the motor and the Detergent Dispensor. Please let me know if you want to part with the 18. They're all Great Machines, but I'm so fond of the 18 series.

Nothing like a KitchenAid trio to brighten up a fall day!

the way the colors of the fronts are perfect fall colors, of the darker earth-tone variety, and how well the match they color of the leaf bed you've assembled them in.

Better than 3 for the season?

How about 5 of them?
I should post my kids for you! KDS18,KDS19,KDS20,KDC21D, KDSM21-A, KUDP02IRWH.

Not to forget their cousins too.. DU950 and GU1500!

But those KA's above look so classic and show the progression of technology thru the years!

Great post. Now hook them up and throw a nice big party!

They look great! My Mom had the one in the middle with the wood trim from the one on the right. I love those ellpytical jewel lights! STYLE! STYLE!

I wonder if one of those racks would actually fit in a KDS-14?? Anyone ever try this?

Jon

No such luck!

Oh! If only you could fit the 15 racks in the 14 tank!

Not by any stretch of the imagination would it work. The tanks are not the same width or depth not to mention the height as well.

As most of you already know, the UM commercial Hobart undercounter and KD10-14 series machines shared most of the same dimensions and mechanical items. The 14 had a higher tank to accomodate the top rack but the racks were smaller than the more modern sized commercial standard of approx. 20"x20".

Demand grew from the consumers for more capacity in both domestic and commercial lines so that when they designed the 15 series, it took the racks you see in the 17 as well as a 20x20 rack on a special carrier for the commercial models. That enabled a commercial establishment to use the same racks in their undercounter machines as they could use in thier conveyor machines. The 15 series laid the foundation for the first WM series that Hobart built. After that, they used the 16/tank bottom and sides with the 15 top and then went to the 18 series style tank and pump but the tanks came over here from Europe but both used the American pump systems.

The other major reason for discontinuing the UM series was that by the time they made that decision which was 1979, the dies they were using had all but worn out and it did not seem appropriate to spend the money to retool up to continue producing the UM series. It would have been another story if they were still making the 14 series but that was long since over with. By '79, the 14 series was basically obsolete from the standpoint of providing replacement parts. Hobart was one of the few companies at the time who still made parts for 15 years after production ended.

Good wish, Jon, but you might need more than a fairy godmother to make it work!

What's up with the other two such that they're only parts-worthy?

I've never met a KitchenAid that couldn't be resuscitated ;-)

You guys are just too much! :-)

The 18 is pretty beat up. It *might* live another day if someone were to dump a TON of time into it, but would need racks, etc., which would probably come from a good machine. The 20 has a decent tub, minus a huge chip in the porcelain tank and a cracked control panel. The racks are rotted out in both machines, which really is a shame. They will live on as parts machines.

The 17 is almost too nice to part out. I already have a 17 in just as nice of shape, so we'll see what happens. Fred, you wouldn't happen to have SS panels for a 17 KDS, would you?

Ben

Now I'm not sure which model the SS panel will fit. Could you let me know measurements and/or distinguishing characteristics?

Fred
