Well, the final classic Hotpoint purcahse of the year occurred a few weeks ago and I thought it about time to show her off a bit!

A total b1tch to move.
A total b1tch to store...
but what FUN.

She is a May 1985 Hotpoint 'New Generation' 96702 Super De Luxe L.E, complete with slightly cracked facia - wouldnt be a New/Next Generation Hotpoint without the wonderful fragile facia.
To give it its dues though, the cracks are due to escessive stresses placed on the facia during its life time.

Words of warning to all plastic facia Hotpoint top loader owners out there - dont pull the machine back by holding the middle of the facia. Causes the facia to want to buckle in the middle and causes the two end corners to ping!

I hasten to add - the machine was like this prior to purchase - not guilty guv'.

Anyway - enough waffle - to the piccies.

The first is as she was, when me and rob first clapped eyes on her. A bit mucky, but good bodywork and retaining her 5 year guarantee rosette...

And here she is the day that she was collected by me, with help of Chestermike. Much obliged Mike - without your help, there is no way that that Saturday would have run as smoothly as it did. Thanks for doing the Transit van driving too.

Also has a spare (chipped at the corners as well) facia, following the usual Hotpoint New Generation habit. Namely me and Rob acquire a machine, but any spare facias are from the other colour machine!

This is a 96702 - its spare facia is from the white 96700.
We own a 95620 - its replacement facia came from an Almond 95622.

Have resigned myself to this occurring all the time with our new Gen purcahases - a roll of the eyes and shrug of the shoulders, accompanied by a brief sigh, sees us get over it.

and the 5 year guarantee sticker.

I think it was this feature that really made myself and Rob smitten with the machine.
It is a lovely feature and matches our Next Generation Hotpoint 9410 Supermatic De Luxe, which also retains its rosette.

Hi Kevin.

More piccies following soon!

She has the Hotpoint Spiraclean agitator with filterflow feature on the top, where you place your powder and which sifts the fluff and bits out of the wash.

Some vids will follow in a bit.

Cheers for viewing
Paul

The the weakest link - literally!

That brown plastic produced a very smart looking range of machines in the 'New Generations', even if it was their weak point in old age when it becomes very brittle.

Here we go then - the options buttons.

All pretty self explanatory, except for the Super Wash option.
All L.E (Low Energy) Hotpoint machines would wash, I think, 10 degrees lower than adververtised on the facia for each programme.
This could be overridden by pressing 'Super Wash' which bumbed, for example, a 40 degree programme upto 40 degress rather than 30.

Something like that anyway. If I am wrong, someone will put me right.

Nothing really important to say except I was born in May 85 hehe. Nice machine! Always interested by the hotpoint top loaders. Ever since I saw one in Emmerdale lol. Oh! Congratulations!

The programme guide and machine name, with the good old Hotpoint name in the good old Hotpoint script!

Post# 318836 , Reply# 9   12/8/2008 at 14:56 (5,589 days old) by matchboxpaul (U.K)

and the programmer, with the wonderful see through plastic dial. The sign of a New Generation - easy to crack with too much force, with many a New Generation front loader seeing their see through dial replaced by the much less classy Next Generation solid dial. Much sturdier, but not as stylish in my opinion.

My intention, when the machine is permanently plumbed in and unlikely to be moved for a few years, is to remove the facia and to glue and strap that right hand crack back together again.
The left hand crack is slightly more difficult, as it has some plastic missing.
Still trying to fathom getting round the left hand one!

Hi David.

Hope all is well with you.

Although my top loader interest was never as strong as that with the front loaders, I too have memories of them.

a Hotpoint 1504 lived opposite me and, for a good couple of years, I would open my curtains each morning and see it sat at the side of the neighbours house, after it was replaced by a Philips.
A mate of mine had a 1509 Liberator top loader. Obviously made an impression on his mother for, when it gave up the will to live, it was replaced by a 9604/9605 machine.

Cheers for commenting.
Paul
p.s I think the Emmerdale top loaders were 9600/9604/9605's. could be wrong though. Only watched emmerdale for their appliances - seem to remember a black facia Philips series 90 right hand drive and a grey facia Zanussi dishwasher.

Final one for tonight - taken the morning after she was collected and just before she was placed into 'shed store' for a few weeks waiting the day water would be added!

Will post the second chapter, involving water, and some vids tomorrow!

Until then - nighty night.

I remember someone washing too many woolen jumpers and flooding the kitchen in Emmerdale. Well, i think it was! There was a grey Zanussi dishwasher in the big house.

Everything is well up here. bit cold!

Anyone noticed that Gail Platts kitchen has been replaced but she has hung on to her old Zanussi jetsystem washing machine..............says some thing for it

Paul & Rob it is great too see this machine coming along and i know it will be well restored and looked after.

one other thing, in the 1970s Ronnie Corbett was in a sitcom called "Sorry" in this his nagging mother had an early Hotpoint toploader in the huge open plan kitchen it was often in shot

Hotpoint Filter-Flow

Nice one guys, glad you took the plunge and got the machine you wanted, I`m sure you can get that fascia sorted!!!

The great thing about these machines is the simple robustness of them, the design didnt change (except a few modifications & beefed up parts) since its inception in the 60`s, a porcelein spin tub with holes, poly plastic outertub, SpiraLator gyrator and Filter-Flow action, 10lb load, 2.8kw heater all topped off with a 1150rpm spin...

Heres Rob with the money shot getting his first fix:

Hi Gary.

Yep - 'Sorry' provided a Hotpoint liberator top loader in the first series - have it on DVD.
Dont know how many series there were but, in a later series, they had a Hoover A30XX. Havent seen any Youtube footage of the latter but it was either an A3006/A3058 or A3060.

Memories eh!

To the fun!

A couple of weeks ago Alex (Super Electronic) popped in to say hi, having been on business in Manchester.
Took the opportunity to try the 96 out.

We had to fill it up via hot water from the kitchen tap, balanced out with cold from the outside tap - bloody cold fill only provision!

I think Alex got a bit chilly - sorry mate:

Coincidentally Alex owned, and brought with him, the Instruction manual for the Hotpoint 96700/96702.
Rather than being the normal booklet, this was a big fold out sheet which, when fully unfolded, was the size of a bedroom wall poster.

Well, that is it for the time being.
Hope you enjoyed the viewings.

Bit of an update on another machine of ours. The day me and Mike collected the 96702, I also purchased 2 motors:

1x 1400rpm FHP motor
&
1x 1400rpm GEC motor.

Sooo, with a bit of luck, the new year will enable the reactivation of mine and Rob's 9560 Microprofile.
Will keep you posted.

Cheers
Paul

Great job on the thread.

You have it all wrapped up so well.

Mike, thanks again for the driving not to mention the great friendship, the advice, help and being there to talk to - I totally forgot about that picture taken 18 months ago, seems so long ago considering all the stuff we have done together since.

Who could ask for better when it comes to friends?

Congratulations on your lovely new washer! I’ve never had the pleasure of seeing one of these in the flesh. If one comes up near me I may well think about getting one. Thanks for the videos and piccies. I am currently still debating getting that Hotpoint twinny! Might be fun! It’s nice to know your lovely old classic is in good hands.

One question I have is how these machines deal with woollens? Obviously the action could stretch them, I wondered how it worked?

All the best

Rob

I never knew that anyone other than GE ever made a Filter Flo type washer. This one looks very interesting. It also seems to operate very quietly. Thanks for posting all the photos and vids!

Hotpoint /GE

seamusuk's profile picture
Hey Allen.

To all intents and purposes that IS a GE Filterflo!.

Hotpoint UK were connected to GE up until roughly 2002 when Indesit took them over.

The major difference is that the UK variant has a 3kw heater fitted ;)

Hi Rob.

If you do get a hotpoint toploader, heed my warnings on the very first posting on this thread! They are a handful! Its amazing how that difference in size and the protruding programmer facia, makes them a different ball game in the movement and storage stakes.

Obviously you are in the better position, than me and Rob, in that you have permanent plumbing so, once you actually get the machine to your house, you should be able to plug and play.

Go for it!

Cheers
Paul
p.s....
there are a couple of early 1500/01s out there in safe hands.
I know of a 1502.
Keith has a 1504.
Mark has a Liberator 1509.
Me and rob have a New Gen.
Mike has a Next Gen.

That leaves models 1507, the box 1508 and the silver facia 15690 and brown facia 15790/792 not represented in the ranks of preserved machines. Will keep my eyes peeled for you!

Hi Allen and Seamus.

You have both got me intrigued by the other versions that were out there.
What was the American equivilant, which used the filterflow, and what did it look like?

I also remember reading a thread which had a picture of the Australian version of the Hotpoint 1500 (marketed by Fisher & Paykel), complete with matching dryer! Unfortunately I didnt get a copy of the picture - dont say it Mike!

Hi Paul,

This is a link to a New Zealand website which shows YOUR UK Hotpoint marketed as a "Frigidaire" in New Zealand. They were also badged "Kelvinator" and "Fysher & Paykel" in NZ.

In Australia, they were sold as "Kelvinator". I have seen one many years ago, but not since.

The F&P AEI Top Loader

Hi all

Paul mentions a thread about the 'down under' version of the AEI top loader - I started it ages ago, and here it is! A rather nice looking pair based on the 1502 model.

Hotpoint have been in and out of bed with GE several times over the decades. The UK top-loader was based on the 1950s GE fliter-flo (though called Filter-Clean over here). Although GE and Hotpoint co-operated on projects in the 1970s, it wasn't until much later that GE had a 50% interest in Hotpoint UK during the very brief existence of GDA - the spin-off company following the collapse of GEC-Marconi. GDA was of course sold to Indesit in 2002, with a staged take over of the GE share completed in about 2007. Ironically the first Hotpoint UK washer was a Maytag clone!

Hey David & Leon, thanks for the link to the past threads, had missed those !!! and where is Leslie now (Whiteway)???

Paul, if you look on AW front page and go to Cyber Museum, GE , you will see the FilterFlow`s of the 50`s, no Hotpoints yet, but have used Roberts and they are great to see in action, No Spiralator, that was a UK feature!!!BUT Plenty of colour, which is what ours didnt have!!!

Who`d have thought the humble Hottie top loader would have been big down under and across the globe!!!... very much testament to a proven design... heres Uni`s going for a spin with BOLD 2 in 1....Hhmmmm

Spiral gyrator and the various models

Hi all

Mike - good point about the 'Spiraclean' agitator (or is it a gyrator - Hotpoint couldn't seem to decide!) - the Hotpoint first appeared in 1963 - maybe one of our US friends can tell us when the first GE appeared with a spiral agitator - did we get there first?

Paul - the full list of top loader models is:
1500 Automatic 1963 export models use ‘GALA’ brand
1501 Automatic export models use ‘GALA’ brand
1502 Automatic export models use ‘GALA’ brand
1504 Automatic De Luxe 1969 – GALA brand dropped
1518 Automatic De Luxe Jan 1975 - as 1504 with interlock
1507 Automatic De Luxe
1509/01 Automatic De Luxe Jan 1975
1509/02 Automatic De Luxe Sept 1975 (four-pole motor replaced by two-pole)
1509/05 Automatic De Luxe April 1977
1509/10 Liberator Super De Luxe July 1978
15690 Super De Luxe August 1979
15690 DC23 Super De Luxe November 1979 (rocker switches)
15790 Super De Luxe
15792 Super De Luxe
96700 1050 Electronic De Luxe L.E. (temp. sensing)
96702
9600
9604W
9604A
9605W
9605A

You'll see that some models overlapped (probably because of production stock - the introduction of the statutory interlock causing some disruption obviously), and some of these model variants lasted for a few months only! The 15690 with the pus-buttons is probably like gold-dust, but the one I'm hanging out for is the ultimate liberator - the 1509/10 - I've yet to see one - most people have the earlier 1509s, fine machine they are too of course!

The odd bit is that these are effectively face-lifts and mechanical updates, I guess that the demand for automatics in the 60s and 70s meant that different grades of machine weren't viable. Shame - what would a BOL top loader have looked like, and can you imagine a top end model, with two wash speeds and other such luxury features?

Checking in slightly late

And so it came to pass, on that cold and misty late November morning, that I was reunited with an old flame. My ardour has not dampened in intervening sixteen years since I last saw a Hotpoint top loading automatic in action and I was pleasantly surprised by its performance. Someone has already mentioned that it seems quiet – indeed it is compared to my recollections. I was expecting a fair old roar when it started up but no – just a satisfying low pitched whirring! Admittedly, perhaps being outside the acoustics were more forgiving and my perspective of loud noise has probably changed since I was twelve. Then again, the mechanical restoration may have put it in somewhat better condition than the machines my family owned.

The pictures and videos say it all really and are easing the pain of not having one of my own. Short of getting one and having an obliging soul store it for me (the latest daydream based in practical reality) I will just have to make do with all the stuff posted here and the videos on YouTube.

Huge thanks to Paul and Rob for allowing me to come and sit in on the latest reveal (couldn’t have picked a better machine) and for being thoroughly decent chaps generally.

Just in case anyone is wondering, I am pictured somewhere above as the mystery hands at the end of blue coat sleves holding the hoses in the wash bowl. No advantage in a mug shot, especially as we had been up drinking and chatting til 3am the previous evening. And yes I was cold – it was about 2 deg C and clouds of steam were coming out of the machine from the warm water – but well worth it for the experience.

Alex

Suddenly remembered a programme from my childhood.

I remembered this morning that 'The Sooty Show' once had a Hoover A3060 sat behind Matthew Corbett, just by the backdoor, in his kitchen.

Sooooo, I went over to youtube.

Havent found the A3060 yet BUT did stumble across Sooty, Sweep and Sue entertaining themselves behing a Hotpoint 9604/9605 machine and post it here for all to enjoy.

If you click on part 2 of the same episode, you will see a Creda Dryer too.

Great to meet you finally and glad you enjoyed yourself. Real sorry for not being able to play indoors - I bet you have never had to warm your hands in the steam emanating from a Hotpoint Top Loader before!

Hi Paul and everyone else!

Thanks for your post Paul!

In the opening of an episode of Rentaghost, they have a Hotpoint like yours and Rob's from the early 80s. Type in Rentaghost on youtube and you should find it! (Sorry youtube is blocked at work so I can't add it).

Just a quick note that I got my Twinny over the weekend. Having lots of fun with it and especially like the super fast spinner. It needed a clean and the lettering has faded but all is well. Will write more later.

Hi Paul, just saw your message saying that i have a 1504, I also have a 1501 from 1964..I find this a better machine than the 1504 that i use all the time, as after the wash the soapy water is spun out and then the usual spray rinse, followed by a "warm" agitated rinse and then onto a cold rinse. My 1504 only does 1 agitated rinse, as this machine was the first one to introduce the "static" rinse, which i am not sure is any benefit..
Cheers

Wow - fab 1501

Hi Keith

Thanks for posting the pic of the 1501 - it is such a classy machine, IMHO the best I've seen on here.

I love the console - the diakon plastic and aluminum looks so good, specially with the light, and its great to see the heater light on the temperature knob. Thanks again for posting the pic, and more power to you for preserving this great machine!

I think the first spiral GE "Activator" was about 1962 with the introduction of the perforated tub (or is that 1961?). Lawrence, how 'bout it?
That Hottie agitator looks just like the Easy "Spiralator" to me.

Those are really kool machines! Would love to have one.

Lovely washer there Keith, it seems that the early models 1500 / 01 / 02 all had slightly different consoles I`ve seen another two recently that look different!!! does yours have the turquoise filter flow etc??

Steve, get yourself over here and we`ll pull the range together for a "Full Line-Up" wash-in, you know you need a fix asap!!!

Link is to the Hotpoint thread wich featured the designer Oliver Hill...!!!pic is of the inside of a 9605 last edition.

Hi Mike, I saw recently a slight variation to my console, but nothing too major...Mine does have the turq filter tray & nozzle & agi knob, but Hotpoint got rid of the colours by the 1502(total silver console) as the insides to that machine is the same as mine, dark grey filter flow & agi knob & white filter clean tray ( slightly different style)
Here's hoping that father christmas brings me a nice new Servis All-Fabric Automatic..hehehe..would be good to try and catch up in 2009.
Have a good Christmas anyway !!
Keith

Hi Keith

Do you have any idea what the difference between the 1500 and 1501 was?

Thanks

David

I second David question.

I cant detect any visual differences between the 1500 and 1501.
So I too wonder just what was the difference between them?

New member here - at last!

Fantastic machine, I remember a relative having one of these when I was a kid; I thought I was going to pass out when I found out how fast it spun!!!

Does it get things as dry as a 1000RPM front loader. Or should I say, are things as wet as they are when they come out of a 1000RPM front loader!!! I have an indesit with the afore mentioned speed and it is lousy!!!

Hi there and welcome to the club!

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you.
Truth be told, I cant answer your question yet (although others, with more experience of top loaders, might be able to) as we havent been in a position to do a proper load with the machine.
Its one and only run so far, in mine and robs ownership, was conducted outside in the cold and was basically to check that the machine functioned.

Come the spring and summer months we might be able to do a comparison test. If we are able to do so, we will let you know.

Happy christmas and, once again, welcome to the club.
Cheers
Paul
