I need some help. I have the motor and pump out and I am trying to figure out how to get the old brake pads out. The nut appears to have a hex head but I cannot figure out what tool to use to get in to losen and pull out the old brake pads. The belt drive ring on the bottom is in the way. Anyone have any experience in this? Here are some pics. Thanks.

I've used a racheting offset closed-end wrench. Not sure of the size..maybe 5/16's????

Yes that is the measurement, thank you. Also do I have to use Maytag Silicone grease or will any silicone grease work?

Hi Jay,

I have an old Speed Queen HA7001L washer from 1983. Within the last year I replaced the brake pads and they are exactly the same as yours. My model was made by Raytheon which manufactured the Amana machines as well. I didn't take the motor or pump out - BUT I did take the top and sides off of the washer to get at the brake pads. It was a dirty, messy job but not too bad. I used a 5/16 ratchet to get the old brake pads off. There's only one screw holding them in. The brake ring that the pads go in between is spring loaded. I took the old pad out, applied the silicone grease (available from PartStore.com), installed the new rubber grommet in the hole of the brake pad, then installed the brake pad and secured it with the screw. Be careful NOT to tighten the screws too tight! They will break off in the casting! I did just that to one of the screws in the back and I had to settle with two brake pads as I didn't want to tear the whole machine down - yet! That will eventually happen but not 'til the indexing problem starts again. So far, it's been working well no indexing and the brakes bring the spinning tub to a stop within seconds.
