Greetings,

I'm interested in selling a dryer drum I have, and maybe some of the other parts as well. It’s from an old dryer that was left in the basement of the house I bought a few years ago.

It is an older one I'm fairly sure. The enamel is still good, gray/white speckle. The outside of the drum is charcoal gray. It is in very good condition as far as I can tell. There is a small amount of surface rust in one small place on the outer part of the front rim. It's about 1-1/2" x 1/2" or so and just at the surface. I think a little steal wool or fine sandpaper and some high temp paint would fix that right up.

The screws that hold the "vanes" on the inside of the drum are not rusted. I think everything on the inside is in real good condition as well. I don't know for sure about that as I'm not about to stick my head in there... it was a virtual spider holocaust just taking the drum out of the cabinet! (I get the creeps just thinking about it...) but, from what I can see through the front and back, it looks good.

Dimensions:
=============
Diameter= 26 1/4"
Depth= 17 1/2"
Front Opening= 14 1/2"
Rear Opening= 11 1/2"

Original manufacturer was Westinghouse (circa 1970). The model number is not apparent, it does say "Auto Dry" on the front panel and has a reference to "Cross-vane tumbling" (marketing-speak for, the blades inside the drum are angled at about 45 degrees front to back), presumably to circulate the clothes around into the heat on the inside.

I have some of the other parts for this model I can let those go too, except for the cabinet. That and the washer cabinet are going to get sandblasted and powder coated prior to becoming the pedestals of my new workbench. I also will probably be using the motor, blower housing/fan, and heating element. The rest can go.

ALTERNATIVELY: If you have absolutely no intention of buying such a thing, but you are clever and imaginative, what would you use this as, other than it's original purpose? I hate to throw stuff in the dump when it can still be used as something, somewhere. I haven't been able to think of anything that I can use this for (thus, the posting), however, if you have an idea for something that I can make out of this item, please send me your ideas and maybe I can use it to build something else!

I'll probably wait a couple of weeks on this list for responses, then try Craig’s for a week or two, and that's it. After that, I need to clear the space and get my bench setup and working.

Thanks!
CJD

PS As I implied, I have a washer too. It’s not quite as old (I think). Its still a late 70’s model and has a good tub both inside and outside. It is very heavy though, I don't think this could be easily shipped, it would have to be picked up. It was bugger getting the cabinet off. I don’t need anything out of that one except the cabinet.

It was a Kenmore “Heavy Duty”. I don’t see a model number for this one either. Though, the control unit says “und. wrt. lab. list number M520” if a cross reference is possible.

If you’re interested it that, let me know. Many of the parts from the washer are in good shape too. The chassis that hangs down from the cabinet is rusty in several spots and it is definitely dirty, it's not in as good a shape and the dryer. I started to pull the “transmission” (I assume that is what it’s called) as I was trying to reduce weight. I could probably put that all back together if you want to buy it, if not, I’m really busy and I just kind of want to get it all out of the way as soon as I can.

I occurs to me while I’m writing this that there maybe someone that wants ALL… the parts either as a project, cannibalization fodder, or whatever… I am not dead set on using the parts I have put aside for my other projects, specifically. If you really, really, want them, I just need to use something for my bench and for another project I promised dear old mum… If you have cabinets that are made of a grade of steal as good as these are and at least in this good a shape, I would consider a straight trade, or variations on that theme. If you have two cabinets made of really good steal which are already sandblasted and powder coated, and one or both have a full front side opened so that I can build in some drawers, you may be my new best friend worthy of giving all this stuff to!

In any case, let me know if you’re interested…
CJD

I did find one reference online (an advertisement) to a model that is similar:

If nothing else, the Ads are kind of interesting....
