I am pretty jazzed about this because I grew up with a Maytag in the house (a 1964, A700 in PINK!) So I was pretty excited when I found this one AND the control panel lights up!

I am guessing this 806 is top of the line?? Well, aside from the 900's..
Anyway... now on to the next washer....

Nice 806! They are really beautiful washers.

Yes.. yes... I know, I know...

revvinkevin's profile picture
This one is too NEW and it doesn't belong here! Maybe so, but the next item up after it for "show 'n tell" will make up for it I think....
The woman did not like this Frigidaire Affinity washer for silly reasons... like not being able to "throw something else in after the machine was started"... so they just bought a new TL. I ONLY paid $75 for this 2 1/2 year old washer and it does work PERFECTLY!! (I've already done 2 loads in it)

So now on to the 3rd Item I brought home....

revvinkevin's profile picture
When I left the house Saturday morning I had only planned on picking up both of these washers... never this one..
The guy I bought the Maytag from also had this dryer and said he was going to have someone haul it away. But after I saw it, I said I would take it.

OK... here it is... the (gas) dryer I also brought home! It's a NORGE!

The control panel is supposed to light up... but the bulb is burned out. Is this type of bulb still available today?? It's 120V and 25 watt but has a "push-twist" bulb like brake light bulbs for a car
Help?

Oh Kevin this is just fantastic. I can't believe all the wonderful things you are finding, and in such great condition! Now for sure I am going to have to get Richie to bring me over to your house
The 806 is after about 1976, as it's the last center dial with the gold trim on bottom and no chrome strip on front of the machine (or apparently the chrome agitator cap). I think by then it was top of the line, as I don't think there were 900s in that last group of center dials
The Norge dryer is from the early 1960s, I've either seen ads or there's been a picture of the day. There was even a hair dryer attachment! The Stop and Dry handle turns off the tumbling and there's a rack you put inside to dry thing like sweaters, canvas sneakers, and etc. Fabulous design isn't it? Hope you're able to find a suitable bulb
The Frigidaire is a wonderful machine too. Richie has had 2 of them now. I think they are a good value for the money.

Drool!

Nice machines! The A-806 is my all time favorite Maytag.
Norge's stop and dry lets you shut off the drum, so you can dry items on a rack (that's probably long gone and very hard to find) without tumbling. (It was handy for things like sneakers and other items that shouldn't be tumbled.)

Your A806 came out of Newton in December of 1975. When you're on a roll, you're on a roll. Don't worry about the rumblings from your neighbors, they are just jealous ;-

Love that Norge Dryer!! You may not be able to find a replacement bulb in your local hardware store, but try an electrical-components supply house and you should do fine. I found some obscure bulbs at a place called McMaster-Carr. I can't remember the exact web address, but you should be able to find 'em easily enough.

McMaster-Carr

Indeed one of the greatest websites on the internet.....bar-none
Their website is www.mcmaster.com... You have to have an account with them to buy anything tho.

Norge.

Super finds, especially the A806 and the Norge dryer. Norge used a positive pressure design (the air was blown into the drum instead of sucked out). This means that lint will get EVERYWHERE. Open up the dryer and clean it out "real good." The Monkey Norge dryer I grew wup with could build up several inches inside easily (and flock the laundry room too!)
Nice collection
Dave

Wash-in at Kevins! Great machines, the appliance gods are on your side that's for sure! I thought with the Frigidaire front loader you could pause the wash and add to the load, I can with mine.

With that name, I doubt the psycho-wards would accept you
Nomen est omen and there's a reason they called them Kevin alone at Home, in NYC, etc
Congratulations on your finds. I like Maytags, never saw a Norge in my life, scarce out here
That bayonet style lamp (they are used instead of Edison base in the UK at 240V for normal lighting) is used in many US appliances, at 125V. You should be able to find one at any better stocked appliance dealer or a good vacuum repair shop/sewing machine shop - they are/were used in some Kirbys and Kenmores, for instance. I had a terrarium with exactly that light in the late 1960's, so you might try a pet supply store, too
The advantages of the bayonet base are numerous. You don't get a shock from the brass base, they resist vibration (spring loaded contacts and you have to twist and turn to remove) and it is even possible to polarize them if you want more than one filament. Wish they were more popular, apart from cars.

Would suggest also contacting a local Lighting company not a Big Box place. Ours in Columbia, Modern Lighting, was very very helpful in locating these bulbs. The salesperson said they are referred to as 'bayonnet'

Congrats, Kevin. You got a great deal on that Affinity. "Can't add an item after its started." The fact that she didn't know how to push the pause button and open the door makes for a sweet deal for you
The Norge is a 1963 I believe. My aunt had a matching set almost exactly like that. Must have been one model down from yours...the heat selector was to the right of the control knob, not above it. And it did not have a drop down door. It was a smalled side-swing door with a round push button to open it. The washer was a solid tub with burp-up lint filter and two small knobs next to the cycle control knob...water temp and speed. The control had regular and short cycles. It was time-fill with a 1/2 fill mark on the dial
Nice Maytag. Had a matched set like that for a number of years. Mine had blue trim on panel, otherwise identical.

also...dielectric grease

I think this was referred to in the local Hardware store as 'bulb' grease. It seemed like a good idea to put a thin film on before installing a new bulb

I was in Lowe's hardware store today and saw the bulb you need in the "Specialty Drawers". Might be worth checking out if you have one nearby.

Well, Kevin, you have snagged yourself some more great classics. The Maytag, in particular, is gorgeous. Gotta love a lighted interior
Can't believe you got that Affinity for a mere pittance! If it's anything like the Electrolux-based Frigidaires I've had, you'll get many years use from it
Congratulations on the new additions to your mushrooming collection!

How the hell did the title of this thread change???

revvinkevin's profile picture
Thank you all for your wonderful comments and suggestions on the light bulb, I will have to search around a little to see what I can find
> I really don't know how this happened, but somehow the title of this thread changed on the link page, but it's still the same on the header above. This is very strange
> On the Frigidaire Affinity, yes you can push the "start/pause" button to pause it and unlock the door, BUT if it's in, or just out of a drain or spin, it takes more then a minute for the door to unlock. So I guess this was just too much of an inconvenience, that AND having to leave the door open when not in use... BOTH of those "issues" were enough for her to get rid of it. ALSO, she listed in the ad she paid $650 for it when she bought it 2 1/2 years ago. Go figure (but lucky me)!!
A little side note here, while I have not tried it... I am pretty sure this washer has a built in heater
> Back to Dan's comment "Good God, you sure know how to find them!!"... yeah I guess... BUT the PROBLEM is... I am NOT really searching for anything specific!!! (that and I want every older washer I see!!!). LOL....LOL
> Thank you Ben for the build date info on my "new" 806! I really love that I have an older Maytag! It brings back memories of the A700 when growing up, so I think this one will definitely be a "keeper"

The thread count got off somehow on this thread so I fixed it, but I must have screwed something else up during my "fixing" process. What I did I have no idea lol. Oh well, it should be fixed now.

Hey Kevin

I've had pretty good luck at OSH hardware for various things. Other suggestions are: Coast appliance parts; 15700 So. Broadway Gardena, Ca. Tel. 310 354-1540 OR 310 217-8888. And Marcone app. parts in La Mirada. ...

Thanks for the suggestions Russell! I looked up Coast Appliance Parts on line and found a location closer to me. I stopped by there after work today to buy a couple things I need and asked about the bulb when there. But they didn't have it.

There also happened to be a service guy picking up parts and I asked him if he had any suggestion for where to go next. He told me "Let me look on my truck, but I'm not sure I have one" and he walked out the door.

Within 5 minute he returned and said "This must have been on my truck as long as I have been working for the company, the last 20 years!" From the looks of the package I would have to agree! "Wow, that is exactly what I need!". He then hands me the box and said "It's yours, I'll never use it."

How cool is that?!?!

I thought Maytag went to the 08 series dryers in 75, leaving the Halo's last production at 74. I'm sure a Maytag guru here will chime in.
