Here is where I spend my days. Live upstairs. Beats acadamia or corporate work.

I envy you so! That would be so much fun to have a place like that where your everyday work happens to also be your hobby and passion. Very nice!

the "lint button" is actually a lint signal/indicator which lights up to let you know the lint filter is full.

That's a neat shop! I've always wanted to be able to live above my shop. Unfortunately, it doesn't have an upstairs!

Cool (or should I say Hot?)

Caloric oven. Is the Westinghouse a freezer?
I know if lived in the "West End" I'd be stopping by at least once a week....

Here's where my family had our business. We lived behind the store, on the first floor. My father started fixing radios here in 1938. You're right about the way of life aspect. Building is for sale, if anyone is interested......

Hi Matt. I remember the Caloric wall oven with the observador.
It also came in colors back in the 1960's.
I also remember seeing one on the set of
The Dick Van Dyke show.

As Jon said, how cool to have a job that is your hobby and passion. Talk about doing what you love.

My only problem would be parting with the machines or selling them for a reasonable price.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for all the positive comments, it is very encouraging. Had no idea the caloric oven was in show business! The westinghouse is a regular fridge, just sectioned off. The top section is the freezer etc. My building used to be a butcher shop, was built in 1893, and has a 10'x8'x12' walk-in cooler. In fact I'm inside it now, made it my "man cave." Here is the front. HAGD Matt.

Actually that Lint button is not a light.......

appliguy's profile picture
but inside it there is a mechanical red flag that pops up to show you when the lint screen needs cleaning. To reset the flag you push the button.....This is according to a Sears repair manual I have covering dryers of that era....I beliee the kind Appnut talks about are only found on Lady Kenmore Dryers....if anyone else can shed more light on the matter please feel free to do so.........PAT COFFEY

Is That A Ghost?

Post# 337234-3/24/2009-08:28 ||| everythingold (Grand Rapids, Michigan)

In that picture above, did anyone else notice this? It is in the middle of the picture. It looks like a man's face wearing a white dress shirt, a black tie, and possibly a suit.

I don't know of any ghosts, if there are, they are friendly. Tx applitguy, you are right, the lint thing is a button, not just a light. matt

Post# 337405 , Reply# 24   3/25/2009 at 01:11 (5,504 days old) by mattl (Flushing, MI)

The "Lint Thing" is a button. On my '73 Lady Kenmore dryer it would shift from yellow to orange as the lint built up on the filter. It almost looked like an oil based system when you looked closely at the button. You have to push it to reset it. It did not light up.

I want to buy a Caloric Ultramatic wall oven like the early 60s model in your picture. So if you or any one you know has one. Please let me know.

... but OMG Matt you are totally living my fantasy.

I would gladly give up my "glamourous" Manhattan network television life for a storefront back home in suburban Pittsburgh.

Hello Matt ... your set-up with the shop down and living space up is just what I dream about! Real estate prices are so expensive in the Greater Vancouver area that this will never happen for me here. However, if I was to move elsewhere, perhaps I really could do something like that! I'd love to have a restoration shop where I could work on all sorts of projects: antique furniture, appliances, books.

Hey there,

I am so glad that you are back in business again. It is a good thing to work in your passion-I have done it as well. I also know what it is like to have it (a busines and lifestyle) ripped out of your hands. I am so sorry. Best Wishes!
