I am expecting to move into a place with a washer/dryer hookup soon. I have had thoughts about getting one of the old classics to fill the space, but am not quite sure yet. I would like something that's not too difficult to find, so a GM Frigidaire would probably be out of the question unless I got real lucky. I do check Craigslist regularly, but I mostly see stuff that's less than 8 years old. Any suggestions?

Maytags seem to come up for sale regularly. I don't have any experience working on them, but the other board members seem to be able to find parts still, which is really important.
Same goes for older Kenmore/Whirlpool machines - I have a belt-drive Whirlpool 'clone' and it is just great!

All but a few of the machines I've acquired since December were found on Craigslist. Including the very exciting, 46 year old, Maytag A700 & matching DE701 dryer set I brought home last week! (also posted here in the Imperial forum, in case you have not seen it).

806 Maytags really have that classic look, are super dependable for daily duty, not that tough to find in great shape, and easy to repair if ever needed. Craigslist, ebay, or even a want ad in the local circular should reveal several.

Maytag 806 w/d

Hi, I have a harvest gold 806 set that I could part with.
The dryer is natural gas. They're in pretty good condition.
Operate as any good Maytag would ;)
Need to clear a few things out.

thanks, Al :D

I'm almost ready to get rid of my WCI-63. PITA to work on, impossible to find parts for, special tools needed to get the job done correctly. FEH!!

I would like to have the harvest gold Maytag set, if it weren't for the distance.

Distance? How bad do you want them? When there's a will....

I guess I missed the Frigidaire 1-18 bus. Bummer! Would you be willing to separate the A806 and the dryer, or would you prefer to keep them together as a set? And how much are they worth?

whatever you'd like

If you want only the washer or dryer...$50.00 would be plenty.

thanks for your interest.

I ventured off to a local Home Depote, to see what they have. I saw quite a few HE front loaders, along with a Bravos, a new model GE high-efficiency top loader, and some Whirlpool/Maytags. Later, I watched a few YouTube videos of a Kenmore Oasis in action. I was not impressed. The front loaders seem to use a teaspoon of water, which I highly doubt would be enough to reach all parts of a king sized quilt or winter parka. Let alone a couple pillows. The prices of these machines are excessive for what their capabilities seem to be, but that's my opinion and others are free to disagree.

There are a couple YouTube videos that I ran across, one in which the author complains about the extensive service calls on his state-of-the-art black computerized Whirlpool Cabrio. And what was his solution? In the end, he shows a mid 1980s belt-drive Maytag with the old fashion timer dial and push buttons that he won't part with at any price. It seems a lot of you have the right idea!

Who has the Harvest Gold Maytag set? I think I sent the email to the wrong person.

I'm so excited, I'm going to become the proud parent of the Maytag 806's!

NorfolkSouthern...a few ideas for you...

Well, Norfolk Southern,

I believe that you run thru Ypsialnti and Ann Arbor, crossed over down by the Huron River by The Ann Arbor Railroad, or what's left of it. The Norfolk Southern now mainly uses it's Southernmost branch that runs thru Milan, and also intersects the Annie there too. The old branch that goes thru town is mainly used now by Amtrak, which is the old Mainline for the Michigan Central System...but now that we have our Washtenaw Country railroads fairly straight I digress. Washers here....

Now that we've ascertained that we are both from Ann Arbor, as well as another wash-er-phile as well, I would like to suggest checking out the Ann Arbor Reuse Center on South Industrial. I've seen quite a few oldies, Maytag and Kenmore's in particular there including a few sets over the years. I would also check The Reuse Center out on Jackson Rd. They get lots of older sets I there to start you out with something that you may want.

If you wish to, you can also hit up the Salvation Army on State street. I have found several old machines there and one ended up going home with the other member who resides here in town. Or at least I believe he got it.

I would also check out Heydlauffs Appliance in Chelsea. they get in trade ins all the time, and I know the owners personally as I handle the vacuum stuff on the west side of town, and they send me all their old customers as they chose to disband their small appliance department a year ago. They now only handle large white goods anymore.

In fact they do have saved for me in their warehouse a late 1982 Maytag Master Wringer Washer with pump. It's one of the last that they ever sold, and when the woman died her family just gave it back to them the dealer. I expressed interest and the owner set it aside for me. Come to think of it; I've gotta figure out a way to get that to my storage in Lansing....Hmmmnn...maybe this weekend if it stay's nice.

But these are a few local spots you can try to find you a good older style washer.

Which BTW if you want one that you should never really have to mess with, my hearts set on Maytag. And I think many here will agree that it's a great starter collector washer becasue you can keep using it and using it and needs very little attention...

Good Luck

Chad
Ann Arbor Michigan Too...

Thanks for the help, Chad. Another member of this board contacted me about a Maytag 606 for sale in excellent condition, and I have been taking an interest in it. Unfortunately, I won't be able to jump on that until the first part of May, when I move to the new place. I'm hoping he can send me a photo or two, which I am sure will motivate me to sieze the opportunity. I'm keeping my fingers crossed; knock on wood!
