Well well what a week indeed..............phewwwwwwwwwww

Excellent classic styling and looks, it is a Hotpoint (inow Zanussi made them) but it is a hotpoint liberator through through.......well done on getting one......happy parents :-)

and yes the Apex..........classic styling with extra CHROME and LIGHTS.............beuatiful.......

But i think our English classics are even more beautiful becuase they have more reserved appearance.

Yes indeed a great but nackering week

Well done and enjoy your new arrival
Gary

Hi gary.

Has indeed been a bit of a week!

Literally got back about 45mins ago with it and really pleased with it. Cant wait to stand it alongside our liberator dryer - different but the same.

Bloody hell Rob! Easy repair - bearings. We havent even got replacemnts yet. Fingers crossed that we find some.
The machine does work, but wea re told has the roar of knackered bearings on spin. the drum tug test results in bearing play.

We might try it once, just to check her out and then it will take its place in the restoration queue.
Still got that Microprofile to sort out yet.
Finding replacement bearings permitting, we will try for a summer restoration. Fingers crossed.

ta ta for now.

Nice one :)

AFIK bearings shouldnt be a problem- give me the date code and will get ya the part numbers- I believe there are a couple of different versions fitted to these models.

How do Seamus.

I had searched for them on the official manufacturers websites previously i.e Hotpoint spares and Zanussi spares.

The Hotpoint site didnt even register the model number at all! obviously given up support for it a couple of decades ago.
I did a search for the S-series machines on the anussi website and it didnt list the likes of S118, S218T etc either.
What shocked me also was that they hadnt got the Z-series machines listed either.
At that point i gave up, as possibly a lost cause.

Fingers crossed then that a source can be found, be great if it could be.
The machine has been put away for the night - one of us will try and get a picky of the ratings plate over the weekend, - the one thing i didnt get a piccy of earlier this evening.

cheers
paul

Is that the color that the glass is supposed to be? Or has something made it change color?

Post# 339733 , Reply# 13   4/3/2009 at 15:48 (5,473 days old) by matchboxpaul (U.K)

p.s bloody hell - the door release button/handle!

am going to be nervous whenever i touch that.
fiddly to say the least.

push the surface button to the right with thumb and then pull handle towards you. sounds easy, but with old plastic involved, I had palputations (had a lot of those this week, what with everything going on) each time i opened the door.

cheers

Hi david.

Yep the door is supposed to be that colour.
Hotpoints liberator series of machines are famous amongst us UK guys for, shall we say, their rather brash/brave colour scheme.

Silver facia, white trims, with dial(s) and buttons (excluding door release which was always white) in various shades of lilac, mauve and dark purple.

The door bowls were all dark purple, which did make things difficult to see.
The styling probably backfired on them in later years as purple didnt really go with UK 1980s kitchens, which probably resulted in machines being replaced.
A machine with less of a style statememnt about it could have lasted longer maybe. just a theory of mine as to what has contributed to make the hotpoint liberator a rather rare machine.

below is the real (as opposed to a zanussi clone) Hotpoint liberator, complete with all the purples.

Safely collected

Hi Rob and Paul, all safely away for the night, though you no doubt will pop out to the shed to check on it several times. I can mock though, this afternoon I cleared the hall, so the hall and stairs are clear of all post and junk, and I will be looking at that several times before bed lol, no I can't qite believe it either, well it will make wheeling machines in and out easier won't it lol.

Ah so thats on the bearings list too, a busy summer yeh, I'll fetch my drift and mallet. Is it an enammel drum with a cast iron bearing spider ?, I had some zanussi bearings somewhere, will check. Paul is it 520 rpm spin, I was only guessing before? Well have a good run tomorrow, and can we have a quiet weekend without any vital finds, give our heart rates a chance to stabalise lol. Oh I only see one very proud owner, lol.

Mathew

Bearings

I think the bearings are still available from Electrolux, they were the last time I looked. Finding the part numbers is the hardest bit, since they have to be converted from 6 digits to the 11 digit Electrolux part numbers now.

Despite the Z series not being technically listed, alot of parts are still available for my Z9191T. The key is to download the exploded diagrams from the Zanussi site and convert the 6 digit numbers into 11 digit ones. The same can be said for the S118, S218 etc.

Don't even bother trying Hotpoint for parts for the 1826 though, they have forgotten these models even existed!

Tom.

Oh Mathew you know the score about cameras and where they point, far to shy still lol,

Better bring your mallets and drifts like you say, I found the required parts needed quite easily so when your up we should have plenty to do,

Would be interesting to see what its like in comparison to a Hotpoint bearing change.

Now that you have cleared your hallway I will be more than happy to bring the Hoover Scrubber/Polisher down and buff those fabulous tiles up to a high gloss shine.

Johnson Wax Klear NO SIREE!!!!

Nice work boys, looking great, cant wait to see it!!! if you here a noise over the wall tonight it might be...???

You`ll have to check the motor tomorrow and let us know if its a Zanussi, I was told it was a UK Hottie type?? but have never proved it...

The parts are still listed in the Qualtex catalogue, BKT08 Hotpoint (1826 Zanussi made machines)its also the same bearing as all the Zanussi DL, GL, EW and FL8 series machines so will be plentiful!!! only thing is its one of those two bearing two washer jobbies...Ohh Doctor...............!!! I`ll order one tuesday with my free delivery order!!!

Quite expensive in its day for a slow spin when the Hoover A3058 was less than it at 800rpm...!!!

Yey! Another fab machine saved!

Well done guys!!

Nice to see one again. I liked the one I had. Really quiet and if you have not water tested it yet you just wait for the water levels...You will be amazed!! Unless mine had a fault the water level on rinse is more than half way up the door.

And yes the door catch was fiddly from what I can remember plus I couldn't believe how bloody heavy it was!!!

Congrats

Mike:

The motor is a Zanussi motor not a Hottie. Quiet and powerful.

Matthew:

It is a 520rpm spin....The final spin goes on for ages!

Heres a picture of the one I had. Was a bit sorry for itself as lots of rust issues:

Bearings,

Well Mike I never even thought of you when I started to search for the bearings, yes if you could order some we will be grateful.

Will give us an excuse to pop over lol,

Speaking of parts I could do with...

*Kirby Heritage brushroll,
*Hotpoint Super 800 3370 cylinder cleaner bags
*and if the Inner Tub Seals are still available for the Liberator 1826 one of those would go down a storm just in case the one on it dosnt seal once its disturbed.
*Door seal for the Liberator 1826....

LOL

May as well make use of free delivery.

Its a fab machine, not had chance to get it started but will do when we get the opportunity.

Door Catch

electron1100's profile picture
Christ i have just recognised that door catch, it is the same as the one on my first automatic, an Electra/Zanussi, yeah you have to slide the small part to the left and then pull the whole thing forward...........and it was delicate further complicated by the bloody door opening delay mech, i bet plenty of those got broken

Part from that bloody lovely..........work work work work i need to win the lottery.........hmm dont we all

My god you guys have some luck!!!!

A family member had the electrolux version! And i confirm the water levels are super high!

Lol who'd have thought zanussi would help hotpoint out..now that would be a far more sucessful colloboration in the modern day than the cancer of indesit they incurred.

I love it. just love it. It's so clean for its age too! Can't wait to see more when you get it sorted!

Congrats again guys!

Thanks for the comments guys.

We are really pleased with it and, time permitting, will try and get a vid of it done tomorrow.

Even though its only 520rpm max - think your Bendix is faster is'nt it Mark (550rpm?) - personally i dont want to run the risk of hurting much more, by spinning it.
Will maybe do a full cycle once, to check it over, and then put it in the restoration queue.

the previous owner mentioned that the door release arrangement had already been replaced once before, so we will have to uber gentle with it.

The 70's saw a phase of fiddly door release handles/button, probably a hangover from when the machines were produced that did not possess interlocks. although Indesit had fiddly mechanisms through to the early 80's, if i remember rightly.

Hi darren. cheers for the comments - really looking forward to the high rinse levels. from the figures on the which report, posted by mike, the 1826 does appear to be a rather thirsty machine.
Purple door permitting, we will try and capture it on any vid we make.

How do Lou.
Yep - there is something about the purpole door. Make it a bitch to see whats going on, but they were smart machines nevertheless.
Thing is they are plastic, rather than glass. As a result years of washing can take its toll. We have a couple of liberator purple door bowls with cracks in them, so they are a bit fragile.

will try and do a vid as soon as is practicably possible.
cheers
paul
p.s below is the 1823 Liberator C - the other Zanussi clone. A cold fill only machine and a top spin speed of.......wait for it.........a whopping 380rpm!

Thanks for the comments. we are really pleased to be the custodians of it and will get it repaired as soon as possible. we are eager to see what it does, without the grinding of worn bearings.
Cant wait too, to get the dryer alongside it to get the true feel of the purple 70's.
Now - when are the true Hotpoint liberators going to seep out of the woodwork? has to happen one day.

hiya Phil.
The machine has a big zanussi induction motor slung under the drum.
rest assured, when restoration commences, i will be there armed with camera to record the event and I will create a thread on it.
Will also get some vids done of it too.

cheers guys.

Zanussi build quality

Congratulations on such a fine example of a Zanussi-point. The giant induction motor in this one will purrr away until the end of time.

I imagine there are a fair few of these still running over the country, machines with low spin speeds tend to live long lives, especially with the build quality of these early Zanussis.

Thanks for all the wonderful comments fellas,

Tom im with you on the low spin speeds, I often wondered what wrong with my parents fisrt machine a 600rpm Frigidaire, old enough to remember it in the kitchen but not old enough to know how it died.

I may ask one day but as the folks have had so many machines with varying faults they probably wont know,

As soon as the wonderful hangover I am left with after a fab night has gone I will start to get ready and when Paul comes over we can start some videos.

R

P.s Tom your Zanussi powder drawer looks mint inside, what did you use to clean it? Both Zanussi's of ours and a few others I have seen have really accumulated thick powder deposits that are now hard as concrete to budge. Dont know what it is about those drawers. Have any of yours been in this state?

Tried scraping but its no use. Is there a wonder product?

Cheers

Rob & Paul you will really enjoy this machine. You will also get used to the 520 spin. When I had mine I constantly kept waiting for it to speed up at the end of the spin cycle as that is of course what we are all used to and it took my brain a while to accept it was going to saty at 520 and then stop.

Powder drawer

Hi Rob,
I used Sainsbury's Power Liquid Toilet cleaner! "Kills all germs, destroys limescale". I imagine Tesco etc. do some kind of equivalent. The JS one is in a black bottle. Apply a liberal covering and leave for ten minutes.

Having said that, this one wasn't too bad to start with, the powder drawer on the Z9191T washcraft was a lost cause and I replaced it with a new one. Not too expensive if I remember correctly.

Tom.

Post# 340053 , Reply# 38   4/5/2009 at 08:22 (5,472 days old) by hotpoint9534 (UK)

I should add that the powder drawer on my Z9191T is identical to that on the Hotpoint 1826 and is still available.

The original handle itself is detached and then replaced onto the new drawer when fitting.

Tom.

Great minds think alike Tom!

Just given the machine one hell of a clean and doused all internal parts with Harpic Power 100% limescale loo cleaner and inside its fresh shiny and new.

Will soak the powder drawer in some later and see what happens if not then we can get a new one.

Cheers for that Tom your a massive help

How Liberating!

Congratulations you two, what a beaut! Finds like this and Gary's KMDL makes me optimistic that there's still plenty of other goodies out there for us all!

Can't wait to see the old gal once you've weaved your magic on her, call me tasteless but a purple Hottie in an orange Formica kitchen would almost be enough to sway me from the Great Red Roundel, hehehe!

How do Simon.

we have just had it running and made a number of vids and took some pics.
Should be uploading a few later this evening.

we are both really pleased with it and, barring the spin when it rumbles quite a bit, it is smooth and softly quiet.

Gary's 3243H is quite superb - been one hell of a week for us all really methinks.

The 1826 still needs some tidying up round the edges and there are one or two areas that requires touching up with some enamel paint, so a small paintbrush will be wielded next weekend.

Next weekend will also see the 1826 and Ecologic go into store for a while until the summer, when the 1826 with a bit of luck will be repaired. Fingers crossed.

cheers

As Paul mentioned we have run a wash through and I must say while the water levels are high, they are not as high as the Hoover levels.

Possibly suggests yours may have been faulty but my calculations based upon the water usage of 145 litres mentioned in Mikes posting ours is working fine.

The 145 Litres is split between the wash, cooldown and 5 rinses means an average fill of 24 litres vs Hoovers 120litres for wash and 3 rinses.

Neptune soap scrubber?

What are they?

In the machine is the "Arielette" powder dispenser which came with those P&G detergents in the early 90's.

The reason we had them was because the sump hoses in most vintage machines filled with water and soap from the machines dispenser drawer, the first gush of water washed most of the powder into the sump which wouldnt then be utilised in the wash.

The advent of Ultra/compact powders meant that ultimately most of the powder would of been lost before the water level was correct. So they invented the dispenser ball to be added to the drum which meant all the powder was used in the wash whhen the action started and none was lost down the sump.

These days with special sump systems we are back to using the drawers on modern machines.

A bit grubby unfortuantely, but nothing we can do without splitting it down to individual components.

I have done this with the standard Hotpoint 18series dial and it is fiddly and difficult. Invariably the metal programme guide, underneath the plastic dial cover, is permanently pitted and unrestorable.
Think we will leave this one as it it....

I really like this picture!

The mirror finish panels on either side of the facia panel are immaculate, resulting in this unusual picture opportunity....

a short first vid to show the high level rinse - apologies for it being out of focus a bit. First front loading purple seen for a long time maybe?

The last time, prior to today, that i saw a wet hotpoint liberator door bowl would have been just over 25 years ago....

A couple more portarit piccies. dont quite know what has causedd only the powder drawer facia to degrade, as the rest of the facia is pretty much immaculate.
The owder drawer has lost the matt silver finish and has gone down to a shiny reflective finish in areas.

strange!...

Second vid.

A bit longer, with more variety.

Some filling, tumbling and draining, then drain tumbling.
No spin....yet!

Owning up....

this isnt the loaded spin!

The loaded spin was rumbly (bearings) like this one and long.
I did catch it on vid, but its a bit uneventful.

This vid is the empty cycle spin, which shows tumbling, draining, drain tumble and the short 520rpm spin through to refill....

Job done!

a load of still fairly damp washing, having been spun at 520rpm.

Nevertheless a marvellous machine in its day and a marvellous machine now, one which oozes character (in my opinion) and enables us to see some wet, front loading purple again.

Both myself and rob are really pleased with it and cant wait to sit it with the dryer. although design wise not a match, they were on sale together and were sold as a matching pair. will get some piccies of it next weekend, with the dryer...

For the sake of the full story of today, i will upload the loaded spin vid to youtube, but will deal with it tomorrow.

It is now 10pm and i have been putting this thread together for the last couple of hours - have had 'Quantum of Solace' on in the background all this time and will have to watch it again, as i didnt really take any of it in.

hope you enjoy the pics and vids.
cheers

Thanks for the videos, Paul. It's great to see one of these in action. These seem to use a Crouzet timer, and therefore fairly quiet. Quite a comparison to the loud clicking of the AKO timer on my Z9191T. The tumbles have a different pattern too.

I always wondered when they changed the drum to the one with the circle in the back, I'm guessing it was early 80s?

Tom.

Hi Ton.

Not too au fait with identifying my timers, so here is a piccy.

It is very quiet in operation, with the gentlest and most discreet of ticks.

A bit grubby inside, but dont want to dig too deep into its innards. Not as simple to repair as a Hotpoint 95 methinks!

Paul

Post# 340387 , Reply# 76   4/6/2009 at 15:31 (5,470 days old) by hotpoint9534 (UK)

Hi Paul.

That is a Crouzet Face Cam timer! These are much shallower than the later Edge Cam ones as can be found in my Z9191T.

The number of wires is bewildering and best left alone if the washer works properly. I once had to change a pilot lamp in mine and getting access to the appropriate terminals was a nightmare.

Have a look at the link below, it may be of some interest to you. I think possibly the Zanussi equivalent of the 1826?

Cheers for the link Tom.

I have always assumed that the 1826 was based on the SL24 ( show below) but know little of this model to know for sure.

As for the SL225 - I have never seen a piccy of this model, although i have another Zanussi mystery picture which i will post next. With it being 520rpm it looks like you are right.

Below is the SL24....

& here is the mystery Zanny....

anyone any idea of the identity of this model.

Love the angles on the facia - a forerunner of the Hotpoint 18-series Microtronic facia style.

Any help with identifying this machine, gratefully accepted.

Cheers
Paul

1826 = SL27T

Hi Paul.

Look at this link, it's the SL27T which uses the exact same timer C127/0 as the one in your 1826 and is hot and cold fill.

The SL24 was cold fill only and had a different timer.

Hope that helps!

Tom

Cheers for all your help tonight Tom.

Early Zanussi's are a major weak point of mine, with no one in my family owning any of the early ones.

That mysetry machine i posted is a major tease, as it is the very one that appears on the front of many of their instruction manuals, including the Sl26T!

I have a feeling that it is an early 1970's model.
When did Zanussi arrive on UK shores?
Could it be their first UK washing machine?

thanks again Tom.
regards
paul

Hi again Tom.

just been and checked the advert from which that mystery machine came from.

It was dated 1974.
Also on sale was the compact toploader Zanussi P5.
Hope this is useful.
thanks

First UK Zanussis

Early 70s sounds about right to me. I'd have to do a bit more digging around.

The first model in the UK was the DL22, however, this has the filter on the left and is a different shape.

I think your mystery machine is either a DL4 or a DL6. Neither have any option buttons but have the filter in the correct place. DL4 had a single level pressure switch, cold fill only and a 380??rpm spin. DL6 had a two level pressure switch, hot and cold fill and a 520rpm spin. Instruction manuals for all three models are on Serviceforce.

I hope i've not got any more numbers wrong, I'm getting tired!

Tom.

You tired Tom!

Then go to bed my friend.

thats where i will be heading, as I am knackered too.
Its exhausting trying to learn all these early Zanussi's.
Must be even more tiring trying to teach it, especially at such a late hour.

I probably wont be able to sleep though, for mulling it all over and over in my head.
So its either a DL4 or DL6.

Thanks again for all your help tonight.
Is very much appreciated.
Paul

DL4 control panel

I've had another look this morning before I head off to work and I've found the exploded parts diagrams for the DL4 and DL6. As you can see, both the control panels match the mystery machine.

DL6 control panel

Some of the part numbers are different from the DL4 so they aren't quite identical.

Thanks Tom, for all the info above.

I have moved the mystery machine from the 'unidentified' folder and christened it 'ZANUSSI DL4(Cold) & DL6(H&C)'.

No way of telling which machine it really is, as i assume they were visually identical from the front.

The exploded diagrams will most definately come in useful, when the repair time comes.

cheers

Have added the final vid in my possession - the loaded spin.

A very lumpy load of towels and a dressing gown.
Was very impressed with the way it balanced the load - I expected a lot more fuss.

Told you it was a boring video!

Enjoy

Lumpy! hmmppphhh

I do not have lumpy towels! LOL

That load only finished drying today aswell despite being on a clothes horse infront of the dining room radiator.

Dont think il be tumble drying much out of that machine somehow.

Was weird having a bath then getting wrapped up in a towel that was strongly smelling of Lenor. The scent really does linger with the extended drying time.
