Good afternoon everybody, I need help I recently rescued a hotpoint 9538W in fabulous condition. Later on discovered its got a fault.

Everything works apart from the motor. As it starts the distribute mode then spins for 10secs, then stops like having a power cut. It will repeat this till the end of the spin cycle.

Sometimes it wont even do that and will just sit there whilst the timer progresses through the programe to the end. When it does spin it sounds as if it's spinning faster than 1000rpm. can anybody help with this problem.

Many Thanks

Hi Matthew

Congratulations on your new machine.

It sounds like the motor just needs new carbon brushes which are very easy to get hold of. They are also quite easy to fit and you should be able to fit them yourself.

You can get them cheaply on eBay. Just search for "Hotpoint carbon brushes" and loads will come up. You will then know what they look like and can look at the ones in your machine. They are positioned either side of the motor.

I have attached a link to a video on youtube which shows you how to replace them.

It's probably why the machine was put out of service. A lot of people think the machine is broken when the brushes wear down. I have taken many a machine to the dump in the past with the same problem before I understood about the brushes in the motor.

Forgot to say it may be a different fault but brushes are the first thing I would try.
