I finally have vintage washer and dryer set Maytag 606's. Thanks to Al, and Mike! I haven't done a video yet but here are some pictures.

Question

How do I fix this. When the washer spins it leaks from here. Do I need to replace the clamp and gasket? I found a gasket on eBay, but haven't found a clamp. The bolts are rusted pretty bad, I have been spraying them with WD-40 but they won't budge.

I think if I could get the clamp off, I could possibly bend it back in shape. Other than this it works perfectly. Not a lot of rust considering it's age. The motor looks brand new.

Yep, 806's not 606's. You also have the rare stainless lint filter.

Looking at the pic, it appears that the tub clamp is bent. You'll probably need to get a new one or steal a good one from a donor machine. The same clamps were used in all small and tall tub machines from the late 50's through the early to mid 90's. New tub clamps are expensive, around $50.

Nice looking set there - guessing late '69 through early '72. Dan's advice is good - the clamp looks fubar'd.

Beautiful Maytags Jim!

Nice looking set. Good luck with them.

No bleach dispenser?

Is there a tub light?

Hey - good eye Gary!

Maybe these are 606's guts with A806 top panels on them? A model this early would have had the early version of the timed bleach dispenser.

I think the timed bleach dispenser is hiding to the right of the pic. It's really crammed in the corner.

606 or 806.

The model number of the washer is HA-606. There is no bleach dispenser or tub light. I have done some testing and everything works even the lights on the control panel. I know that I need to replace the pump belt it's so loose I can slip it off the pulley. So I'm just going to replace them both at the same time.

There is a Maytag dealer over on the IL. side of the river that I'm going to call tomorrow and see if he has a tub clamp. I will try and get some close up pictures of the control panel, but for some reason when I take close up pictures with my digital camera they always come out very blurry. I'm just excited to have a top loader again! From what I have seen on youtube replacing the belts looks really simple.

It it a suds-saver model, but it only has one hose, isn't there supposed to be two hoses for suds-saver model? If anyone has a scan of the instruction book for this model, would you please email it to me @ jkalin196511@gmail.com. Thanks.

Couple of things -

Square non-serviceable motors were mixed with round serviceable motors starting, IIRC, in 73 or 74. A trip to the archives can confirm this. It is very possible to see original square motors on early 70's machines. A nice way to see if the motor is original to the machine is to decode the two letters on the MAYTAG label. For instance, Gary's example above shows that motor with an August '73 build and would consequentially match within a month or two of the machine build month/year.

Also - the pump doesn't have the injector hose running from the dispenser container to the pump. The right handed rubber dispensers did not have a lid bumper on the right hand side, and instead acted as the bumper.

Jim - do you have any photos of the model tags? Regardless of the questions you still have a beautiful set!

Ben

Wow, someone went to a lot of trouble changing over the console, lint dispenser, chrome strip, ect. Too bad they didn't go any further and change over the tub light, outer tub, tub cover, and top for the timed bleach dispenser. Could have been a different colored machine though.

Hey Jim, wow, your camera focuses up close, nice!

So you have a gas 806 dryer and... it would appear you have an A606 washer which, as Dan said, someone went to A LOT of trouble to put an A806-S control panel on! The 806 was the only model of this era with the lighted control panel, the 606 did not. What is the two letter code at the end of the serial number? Is that OB or QB??

You have the suds saver control panel, but you do not appear to have the suds saver machine underneath. While I don't know exactly what a "suds" machine looks like inside, I do know there should be some sort of "valve' in the outlet hose from the pump and two hoses out of the machine from there.

Thanks Kevin

Sometimes that camera will take great closeups and other times closeups will be blurry as hell. I think the last two numbers are 0B. I'm hoping I can repair the tub clamp, but so far I can't get either bolt to loosen up. I have been spraying them with WD-40 and it doesn't seem to be helping any, is there anything better than WD-40 I could try?

Yeah, PB blaster. WD-40 s just a water displacement, not a penetrating fluid.

Clamp and Belts

I found a used clamp for $20.00 from a local Maytag dealer. Can anyone tell me why the belts vary so much in cost. The Maytag dealer wants $39.00 for a set of belts, I called another place and I can get them for $27.00. I also found them on eBay for $6.95 for the set of belts. The $6.95 set sounds too good to be true.

Dealer=Markup.

If you're not pressed for time, get a set from ebay. Just make sure the belts are genuine Maytag!

I'm not really pressed for time, I'm just impatient LOL. This is the set on eBay for $6.95 plus $3.40 for shipping. I don't think they are genuine Maytag. I asked if these were the correct belts for a model 806 and they haven't gotten back to me yet.

Maytag belts

Unless I'm mistaken, all of the older (pre 1980) Maytags use the same two belts. So as long as the belts are for the "older" models, yes they will work!

Thank you for clarifying the years the belts work on. I knew they would work through at least 1980, but was not sure beyond that.
