What are the main differences between these two Maytag models?

The 606 didn't have seperate spin/wash speeds, just RA or GA. It didn't have a rinse temp selector. It didn't have a prewash cycle. It didn't have a tub light or console light. It didn't have the timed bleach injector. It didn't have the metal piece of trim on the front panel. I'm sure I've missed something but others will add on.

Well see I have a chance to get a matched A606 and DE606. I would really rather get the 806 versions. I am not sure what I am going to do.

I think you'll be perfectly happy with the 606 set. If an 806 set (or 806/808) becomes available near you, you can always sell the 606's.

The only light the 606 had on some of its models was the little pilot light that was merely a dot above the dial, and was activated when the knob was pulled out.

Have a good one,
James

Same size tub as the 806. Starting in 1966, Maytag offered a larger tub in certain models (19 pounds if I recall correctly). Before 1966, ALL tubs were the same 16 pound size whether BOL or TOL and everywhere in between. The difference between the small and large tubs is that the large tub is a wee deeper than 2 inches. Both tubs are the same diameter, thus use the same hardware with the exception of the outer tub braces.

Differences in the 806

Recently, I found an 806 in Harvest Gold. It has the tub light, timed bleach dispenser, and chrome strip.

On the left...not like the timed bleach dispenser on the right on my Harvest Gold 806

Still, a great machine.

Those are beutiful machines you have. I still wonder what the tub size is though. Also, could I easily wash a queen-sized bed comforter in it? How about small bathroom rugs?

Some other differences I recall...

On the earliest 606's, the control panel/basksplash trim was flat-finished (like the 106/206's); they changed to bright chrome by or in '68.

On the later 806's the agitator cap went from mirrored-finished to turquoise.

On the later 606's, the pilot light was done away with.

Maytag never rated their tub capacities in pounds (14lbs. 16lbs. 18lbs. etc.)in their advertising. However, it would be quite likely that the models with the bigger (white) tubs had to be 18lbs. The smaller (gray) tubs were likely 14 pounders.

806 Manuals

Does anyone have or know where I can get an instruction manual my 806 washer and dryer? I need the dryer manual more so than the washer so I can figure out how to light the pilot light.

My grandmother had the 606 and it had 3 temp selector hot, warm and cold. I think that the warm and cold had cold rinses. The hot was a warm rinse. 2 speed select Regular and Gentle. And 4 water levels...small ,medium, normal, and Large. Cycles were Regular wash and a Soak Cycle and Perm Press. Hers had the metal cycle control knob and the pilot light. She had the matching dryer. Halo of Heat with Electronic control. One knob did it all. They were a nice set and were still running when she passed away back in 2001. She didnt use the dryer much since she hung mostly everything outside when it was nice out. My cousin has the dryer now and its still going. The washer I think was donated and that was still running flawlessly.
That set is what I learned on when my grandmother taught me to do laundry. Oh the memories.
