Well went and collected this heavy beast today from a another site i visit, my partner spotted it there and told me about it at home.

Got there loaded it onto my trusty sack truck and one of the wheels collapsed under the weight!......site staff helped me load it

Got home and had to carry from car to house about 40 yards, we gave up at the front door and there it sits under a bike cover waiting to be collected ;-)

As you can see it might need the odd lick of paint etc :-)........but what a beautiful machine, the drum still turns as does the motor (by hand), but that is far as i have ventured with it

so Mike thanks for making me orange i in return i give you this ummm slightly in need of restoration Bendix :-)

Pics below

well worth saving

but seeing the overall state I'm happy to let someone else tackle the body work, I would be happy to help with the mechanics though. This will hopefully spur me onto working on the previous model washer, I have started and need to complete. I don't think anyone has this model restored in the uk thought, Mike do you fancy risking flooding your basement lol. Well done for rescueing this Gary, and for lugging it about, possibly lighter than the Lt model, being a bolt down machine lol thats no consolation to your back though.

Thanks for all you've done for me,I took the hoovermatic drain valve into work this afternoon and did an epoxy repair on the casting and glued the new seal in so will try it out over the weekend.

Mathew

the one I'm working on

having rewired the motor, and in thoery had the machine running, the next thing is the drum itself, it's so scaled up, the drain is blocked and ordinary household descalers aren't touching it. The coin trap has been epoxyed up in the past, so I'm reluctant to break that seal, I was thinking the next step would be to take the drum out and brush off as much scale as possible and chemically attack the rest. Any way just wanted to add the picture to the thread.

Mathew

This is the washer of that vintage, it's owned by a theatrical prop hire company, and no they won't let me buy it, though haven't asked rescently. lol

Mat you sly buggah! :-) i didnt know you had a bendix washer!!! LOL..........brilliant.

my mum used to use vinegar on limescale when i was a kid in london, brushing as much off as you can certainly helps. or maybe just good old chemical warfare :-)

I am glad for you to be able to enjoy the 3174, and i hope the epoxy does its stuff

Bloody hell!!!!!

Slightly knackered or what!

That will be a learning curve in restoration.

Cant wait to see the end results - no pressure. lol.

You kept the piccy of the theatre bendix quiet Mathew. I notice what you mean about the dent, although a bit of panel beating will work wonders i am sure.
You will have to start hassling them about it again, or at least put your name on it should it come up for disposal (if you havent done so already)!

cheers
paul

....know my thoughts on white vinegar...

When we were in Germany I brought a small bottle of white vinegar back to the UK with me. It was the strongest smelling vinegar I had ever had a whiff of...clear the sinuses in one go.

Nothing cleaned our kettle in London faster that it did. 2 tablespoons in the bottom and 2/3 fill with cold water. brought to the boil and scale was gone...

BUT....that was a modern plastic kettle and I can't help but wonder what it may do to the enamel in your washers drum

Boltdown model

electron1100's profile picture
Hello Jon I think it is a bolt down model, there are no wheels just long threaded shafts with large nuts on them, the tub is rigid so the only seal is on the door
Though others on this group will know more about this machine than me

I know it is a state and will be a complete restoration job but i still see a beautiful machine there

I only hope that Mike approves and i have not got him a pile of shite ;-)

curious

excuse my ignorance but what is the difference between and Duomatic and the Triomatic? I have looked at the pics of both and they both seem to be washer/dryers to me. Why is the Duomatic so much bigger? Did it have a much larger capacity or was it made for the US market?

Post# 349327 , Reply# 21   5/16/2009 at 04:58 (5,452 days old) by askomiele (Belgium Ghent)

Triomatic, is'nt it because of the fact that it is an automatic washer (uno), with water heater (duo) and electric dryer (trio)...?

Mike WILL! approve or he'll have me to deal with DIRECTLY, the Pond ISN'T That big!!

It has to be bolt down since there is no door boot hence the difficulty in me finding door boots for machines older than 1955! Now my question is answered.

Bendix Semi-Automatic

chestermikeuk's profile picture
The only other small cabinet Bendix in use fully restored is Darren`s in Lincoln, he took a BendixMPh semi automatic and completely restored it, had a new bearing unit machined at a local workshop, and completely restored it, it is fully installed in his retro kitchen with two Bendix taps above it, its great because you can control the length of washtime and rinsing & spinning etc...

We had a machine over here that looked like the triomatic which was just a washer, the cabinet was 28 inches wide and the tub was suspended. It would be identical to the triomatic in looks. I can't tell how wide that cabinet is on the triomatic.
Your Giromatic was the same interior was our Gyromatics so I bet the cabinets were 28-30 inches wide?

That tub seal is the same one used up through the Dexter commercial machines of the 80's.

Nice stash of Bendix parts, we must go parting when I get back over there Mike!!

Darren's semi auto is the BOSS! I love that heat indicator to the left! BOSS!

Jon

why would you only have a "heater only" option? Wouldn't the machine boil if it weren't tumbling?

Post# 349510 , Reply# 37   5/17/2009 at 10:11 (5,450 days old) by askomiele (Belgium Ghent)

I think it will just heat up the water faster, so you get the full capacity of the heater. Some automatic tumble less or slower when heating too...

Wow

Hi Mike,
Love the photos of the bendix. My aunty had a bendix in the 1970,s. Just wondered if you had any photos of her machine. It was the size of the home laundry centre, it had the soap dispenser on the top. It had 4 buttons to the right hand side on the machine. It had a row of lights, wash, rinse, spin. The programme display was on a reel and would go through the cycle, wash, rinse, spin. To set the machine to wash she would hold in the sart button until it showed how many mins to wash. It had a large round chrome door, and a filter at the bottom of the machine. I I think she had to bolt down the machine. I would love to see a photo of this machine.
Regards
Paul

Paul missed your question earlier

jetcone's profile picture
"excuse my ignorance but what is the difference between and Duomatic and the Triomatic? I have looked at the pics of both and they both seem to be washer/dryers to me. Why is the Duomatic so much bigger? Did it have a much larger capacity or was it made for the US market"

Maybe this is an answer.

Triomatic = "Washes, Spins and Heat Dries". In the UK you had a lot of machines that weren't spinners. Here in the US all machines (wringers excluded) spun the clothing dry at the end. The Duo like, all automatics, was assumed to spin so that was not emphasized in the adverts.
The Duomatic was introduced as a Washer/Dryer but it does have a heater in it.
The Duo was the first W/D and so Bendix made it a larger sized machine for the "Nuclear Family". The large tub washes & dries 9 pounds easily.

The Triomatic was based on the Gyromatic (Giromatic) and that machine handles 9 pounds wash but dries 5 pounds without wrinkling. If you use our Duo as only a washer then you could stuff it with 15 pounds wash, but if you dry that you get a big glob of wrinkles at the end. The tub is much bigger. I'll measure next time I'm downstairs.

jon
