ok, i am rested and refreshed from that hectic trip to grand rapids mich. last week and my work weekend is over so now i can relax and start 2 days off. first thing on the agenda is to finish my post of the pics i took while visiting matt (everythingold) at his appliance shop/home. after i finish this post i have to find creative places to put all the machines i brought back. matt told me i should turn my home into a dishwasher museum and i think i am about there now! with every new machine i bring home another peice of conventional furniture goes to either my barn in the back yard or to st vincent de paul! i've even got an idea to take out my bathroom lavatory cabinet and install my sink bowl in the top of an old dishwasher, trouble is i don't have the heart to cut into any of my beloved machines, especially the kitchenaids! think i'll keep an eye out for some old portable with a wood top that i won't mind cutting into. i won't be a kitchenaid i can tell you that!

i got that idea from a sink in matt's bathroom that he made out of an old singer sewing machine cabinet. he mounted a decorative bowl ( most probably a flower pot bowl) on the top, drilled it out and installed a drain and ran a copper tube up and over to supply the water! and the most unique thing about it is it is turned on and off by a water solonoid from a washing machine using the foot pedal that origionally operated the singer sewing machine! now that is clever! it looked great and here are some pics!

when they invited me upstairs for the wonderful

mexican dinner matt's lovely wife lisa had prepared the first thing to catch my eye in their kitchen was this frig!

i knew i had seen this before!

Post# 349972 , Reply# 6   5/18/2009 at 23:11 (5,448 days old) by soberleaf ()
upon opening it i was

immediately taken back to my childhood and all the loving memories of my aunt and uncle who raised me! they had this exact frig in our kitchen! and our kitchen was on the 2nd floor too!

it is the shelves that i'll never forget. those wonderful "lazy susan" type rotating shelves! and that chrome pole in the center they attach to!

Post# 349974 , Reply# 7   5/18/2009 at 23:13 (5,448 days old) by soberleaf ()
i can't get enough of this

marvelous G.E. refrigerator! and i'm not a frig man, i'm a kitchenaid freak!

look at those shelves! that's classy!

Post# 349976 , Reply# 8   5/18/2009 at 23:16 (5,448 days old) by soberleaf ()
look at that chrome!

those stylish lines, you would design a car with that kind of care!

i told matt if he ever wants to sell it i will def be interested. love it love it love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Post# 349978 , Reply# 9   5/18/2009 at 23:24 (5,448 days old) by soberleaf ()
ooops!!! guess it's not a frost free model

oh well, who gives a sh*t! i like it better with the frost!

i remember what fun it was when i was a kid and i got to defrost our frig!!! i had a great time doing it. stick boiling water in it and scrape a little and watch it all melt!

it's classier this way anyway, more nostalgic! i would love to see people today with their cell phones, i pods, blackberrys, big screen tvs, video games, and overly electronic lives have to spend a sunday nite defrosting the frig!

i like this kitchenaid too

i remember this model, no control panel on the door, a console on the back top instead.

love the control panel

on this beauty

matt will have to tell us

what model this is, i forget. it does say "regal" on the panel unless i'm reading it wrong

here's an inside

pic of this lovely old kitchenaid.

not to worry about the missing bottom rack, matt has a ton of racks in his shop downstairs! if any of you guys need racks he's your man!

that top rack is like new!

Post# 349986 , Reply# 14   5/18/2009 at 23:37 (5,448 days old) by soberleaf ()
i love the design of the lower front panel

on this machine, i remember seeing it in my local appliance store when i would window shop and dream as a teen! when the rest of the kids were out thinkin of ways to get in trouble i was thinking of ways to afford a kitchenaid! who would have thought that i would have 17 of them now!

Post# 349989 , Reply# 15   5/18/2009 at 23:42 (5,448 days old) by soberleaf ()
oh, here's another of that

great old refrigerator! the name plate on the front! what class! i remember G.E. used to be something when i was a kid! now i would not own anything g.e. except a litebulb! personal opinion ofcourse for all you g.e. fans, we all have our favorites don't we!

Post# 349992 , Reply# 16   5/18/2009 at 23:49 (5,448 days old) by soberleaf ()
okay, back downstairs to matt's shop (with a full belly)

after that great dinner i started roaming again thru all the rooms. the front room is the main showroom and it is full of appliances such as these!

i see a frigidaire in avacado in the background! love that control panel! and that whirlpool is very interesting too!

maybe i did need a bigger truck!

Post# 349994 , Reply# 17   5/18/2009 at 23:51 (5,448 days old) by soberleaf ()
look at that beautiful

caloric double oven in the background!

Post# 350003 , Reply# 18   5/19/2009 at 00:04 (5,448 days old) by soberleaf ()
i'm guessing the 60's

on the age of this one? maybe i'm wrong, i'm not that knowledgable on stoves but that control panel screams the 60's to me! correct me if i'm wrong here.

matt offered it to me but i didn't think i had room on the truck and more importantly i knew i had no room in my kitchen what with 6 dishwashers, a stove, a trash compactor and one very big frig!

besides, i'm waiting for a frigidaire "flair" double wall oven to come my way to replace the one i stupidly let get thrown to the trash when i sold my old house 2 years ago! what an idiot i was! i could kick myself but alas, i had not heard of automaticwasher.org nor had i come out of the closet yet about my interest in old appliance collecting. i had only one dishwasher then too!

matt says he knows of a flair oven nearby and hopefully i can buy it from him at a later date! there is also a beautiful frigidaire flair stove with the double oven for sale in indiana, they want $400.00 for it if anyone is interested. i saw it on this site!

i love this old kenmore dryer

it looks so plump!

and i love the controls on the sides! it could be cleaned up and be absolutely beautiful again!

as i said in my first post

"almost" the calico kitty followed me everywhere and helped me pick out the dishwashers i bought!

Post# 350008 , Reply# 21   5/19/2009 at 00:14 (5,448 days old) by soberleaf ()
matt's boxer

is a very sweet dog named "royal" and he also helped me pick out the dishwashers i ended up bringing home. he thumped his little stub of a tail against the one's he liked and peed on the one's he didn't!

Post# 350011 , Reply# 22   5/19/2009 at 00:20 (5,448 days old) by soberleaf ()
"almost"

checking out a disassembled frigidaire 1-18 washer in beautiful coppertone! i loved coppertone! these new appliance colors can't hold a candle to coppertone, avacado, and harvest gold!

Post# 350014 , Reply# 23   5/19/2009 at 00:23 (5,448 days old) by soberleaf ()
i remember that

control panel well! i used to go to department stores when i was a teen and spend hours browsing at washers and dishwashers!

"almost" has found something more interesting in that bucket to check out.

this one i think

is a 21 model, correct me if i'm wrong here.

don't worry about a bottom panel, he has a ton of em!

Post# 350017 , Reply# 26   5/19/2009 at 00:33 (5,448 days old) by soberleaf ()
a couple of friendly washers

sitting side by side here!

the one on the left is a speed queen and the one on the right matt will have to describe. it's a european something or other and is a combination washer/dryer i believe he said.

i was sort of interested in the speed queen but i have a frigidaire front loader that i like already plus a whirlpool newer model front loader that i got at lowes as a scratch n dent for 200 bucks that i hate! and with that beautiful frigidaire jet action rollermatic going home with me, well, there was simply no room in my heart (or my house) for any other!

Post# 350018 , Reply# 27   5/19/2009 at 00:34 (5,448 days old) by soberleaf ()
just had to throw this in!

my beautiful frigidaire!

Post# 350021 , Reply# 28   5/19/2009 at 00:37 (5,448 days old) by soberleaf ()
i know i will probably bore everyone

with my questions concerning this machine but please humor me on this! i know very little about them and want to do everything i can to keep her running well! i have read all the old posts on "rollermatics" and the info i have gotten already is invaluable!

but i know i will have future questions for you frigidaire guys and really appreciate your helpful responses!

Post# 350023 , Reply# 29   5/19/2009 at 00:42 (5,448 days old) by soberleaf ()
that is one beautiful washer!

i just love that jet cone pulsator! and that blue color brings back all those memories of me in the basement watching it go up and down (that didn't come out right, did it)

Post# 350028 , Reply# 30   5/19/2009 at 00:48 (5,447 days old) by soberleaf ()
for all the stove guys

"everythingold" has a boat load of stoves too! from newer models to that beautifully restored old vintage red stove in the extreme background of this pic.

it's hiding behind that equally beautiful frigidaire dryer. is that a custom imperial, i think it is but could be mistaken.

i should have gotten more pics of that red stove though, it is a real honey!

Post# 350031 , Reply# 31   5/19/2009 at 00:53 (5,447 days old) by soberleaf ()
that is a "shredmore" transmission and agitator

isn't it!?

and an upside down 1-18 in the background.

i remember noticing the belt and was surprised that a rollermatic transmission had a belt drive. then i read all those old frigidaire posts and learned a lot about the 1-18 as well as the rollermatic!

Post# 350032 , Reply# 32   5/19/2009 at 00:54 (5,447 days old) by soberleaf ()
"almost"

looks good next to avacado!

Post# 350033 , Reply# 33   5/19/2009 at 00:58 (5,447 days old) by soberleaf ()
this back room was full of kitchenaids

double stacked! i was in heaven!

matt has a bunch of microwaves too, one in particular was very interesting, an amana radar range! don't think i got a pic of it though, i wasn't thinkin "microwaves" with all those kitchenaids around!

Post# 350034 , Reply# 34   5/19/2009 at 01:01 (5,447 days old) by soberleaf ()
this one i almost brought home

matt told me to take it as a parts machine but i decided i had enough although i do love those panels. i may offer to buy those panels from him at a later date if he still has em around!

it's my favorite model, a kds 17-a superba. but i have 4 of these now and if someone else wants a superba this one would be quite stunning!

Post# 350035 , Reply# 35   5/19/2009 at 01:05 (5,447 days old) by soberleaf ()
need a door for a 16 imperial?

there's that kelvinator i brought home in the background. i have ordered a new water seal for it off the web. they are still quite easy to find for those d&m machines, including the kenmore's like my roto rack i picked up recently in tenn.

Thanks again Pete for the visual tour of Matt's shop.

It's always great to see that someone cares and is saving the old machines that still work rather than crushing them for the metal.

Regarding the 1-18: The first one I saw in operation was a white Imperial with a glass window on the lid. It was in a shop class, used for cleaning towels. That machine would beat to the rhythm of some Black Sabbath and Alice Cooper tunes, which, of course, matched my musical tastes perfectly. My mother's old Whirlpool Supreme could not possibly come close to having that cool factor this Jet Cone agitator had; no way.

One Summer, I stayed with a couple who had an avocado like the one pictured in this thread. That was the machine I used to do my laundry while there. I could never get over what it was like to play with. It would just jump up and down with loads of duds, gobs of excitement, and lots of noise. I was hooked! It's something that nobody will understand until they have experienced it first hand.

A couple years later, they got a Maytag which I just hated. I would throw my cloths in, add whatever, and abandon it. It was never the same. I really do hope your Rollermatic can provide a lifetime of service, soberleaf. Because using one of these machines just once can be just like taking that first shot of heroin. The withdrawal symptoms are a bear!

alice cooper you say?

my first concert i went to was an alice cooper concert! 1972!

think what i like best about this washer is the solid tub and the overflow rinse. i would use it as my main machine but am too paranoid about wearing it out, so i'm keeping my other washers in the laundry room so i won't be tempted to go to the rollermatic every time i need to was a load!

am modifying my frigidaire front loader today, adding a switch to turn off mechanical timer to extend washes and spins, and adding a switch so i can put more water in the thing and let it wash the way God intended it to wash!

Post# 350376 , Reply# 59   5/20/2009 at 13:56 (5,446 days old) by norfolksouthern ()

The best way to care for a Rollermatic like you have, would be to keep it clean and dry in a temperature and humidity-controlled environment, such as your living quarters. Towels and blankests (as long as they're small enough to fit and don't shed much) are OK to run though it, but I wouldn't want to try anything with pockets because you never know if something you forgot may sneak out and come in contact with that bellows. Of course, anything that's soft will be easier on the agitator and tub. Using your other washers (ie: for jeans) will significantly extend the life of the Frigidaire.

Any washing machine will need exercise from time to time, to keep it flushed out, parts free, and any rubber flexible. If you just need a fix once every couple weeks to help keep the tingling and flashbacks in check, then you're good to go!
