Hi guys,

Some of you might know me as turbo500 over on vacuumland and Chris on Hooverland UK. I need a bit of help about my washer. I'm not a total novice when it comes to washers and dryers. I know the basics - avoid Indesit, stick with Miele etc. But at the moment, I'm on a budget.

My apartment came with a washing machine already in it - a Beko WM5100W and it's not particulaly good. It's loud, takes a lifetime to do 1 wash, doesn't fill up via the fabric conditioner compartment AT ALL and so the softner compartment just clogs up and it doesn't always spin. So we're replacing it. I just was curious as to which washing machine I can get that's fairly decent and under £250. I don't expect it to last me 20 odd years like my Mum's old Zanussi, but at least something a bit quieter that washes well and does everything it's meant to. I've read a few reviews online and I'm stearing well clear of Beko, Haier and Indesit but everything else seems to be a bit too expensive. Any ideas?

many thanks,
Chris

Well if its under £250 its always going to include haier, beko and indesit- but indesits also go to 300+.

Theres a whirlpool which is for £240, 1200 spin and 5kg. I'm pretty sure it'll be better than beko. its been rated 4.8 out of 5 which is really good on comets site by buyers.

Don't buy whirlpool!

I have the exactly same machine except for the slower spin speed and it had 2 service calls in 6 months!
First was for bearing failure and the second because it started filling too much!!!
For the bearing all the machine's insides had to be changed! The tub is welded and you can't do anything! If I were to repair it out of warranty it would have been a 285€ bill! And also for the overfilling problem the PCB/wire harness were changed, again under warranty, if it was out of warranty, the bill would have been of 180€!!!

Get something from a European producer!

Even Indesit is better than Whirlpool! Get a nice Hotpoint (indesit) machine or anything from Electrolux and why not something from Candy/Hoover or Brandt? Do they (Brandt) sell anything in the UK?

Beko

ronhic's profile picture
New Beko's are pretty good machines from a wash perspective, but Which? has pointed out that they have all have long 'normal' cycles and can have a tendency to be noisier on spin. This is something that many machines they test have suffered from and all of them in your price range. Beko's top end machines though, are much much quieter.

From the sound of it, it could be an inlet solinoid that is causing the issue with the fabric softener dispenser if it is not filling via there OR if water is just flowing over the top, a clogged siphon....

As for the spin, well that I can't help you with unless the OOB sensor is stuffed.

On a personal note, my mother bought a Fisher & Paykel version of the WMXD760 and it had a control board replaced in the first week as it wouldn't pump out before spin....that was nearly 12m ago and it has proved since then to wash brilliantly, spin quietly and rinse far better than most...it is certainly much quieter than the ASEA it replaced.

Any brand can make a bum model and any machine within a range can have 'issues' that the rest of the models within that brand don't suffer...check out Argos. They have customer ratings next to the machines and Beko has an average of 4/5 with a couple of models in your price range hitting over 4.5/5

When spending the sort of money you are discussing, you are unlikely to get a quiet machine (compared to spending GBP350+), but from what I can read at the Argos site, you can get one that other people have been pleased with.

Help With My Hotpoint Aqualtis

I have a Hotpoint Aqualtis model AQXXF149PM. Yesterday the machine finished its programme, showed end, but door locked light was on and unable to open door. I put the machine onto a drain only cycle, it also showed end, and door locked light on and unable to open the door.

I then put it on a spin, and as soon as the machine finished and showed end it made 3 clicking noises, as it was doing this I pulled on the door and was able to open it.

Normaly as the machine shows end, it always makes these clicking noises.

Has anyone any idea what the fault could be.

Regards

Paul

Morning Chris

One of the best range of washers for price , performance, reliability & 2yr guarantee is Gorenje...have a look at the latest models and give me a call or email me for a "Club price"!! or for any other model as well.

Paul, I wonder if the door alignment is faulty after the accident, or as the board is also in the Aqualtis door, I wonder if it has been cracked etc..how old is it now?? you might be able to do a deal with the service department as it still has the 4yr parts, but had suffered damage etc..

Hi.
Beko get alot of stick but they are not bad machines for the price . Avoid Indeshit and Haier !
Bradford city centre- have they built the new shopping mall yet.
I used to live in Baildon and moved to South Yorks some time ago.
I was there last year and Forster Square was flattened !
Prestigious old city ,left in a right mess.

Hi Chris,

Do yourself and a favour and don't buy Hoover or zanussi, Hoover/ candy are currently the worst machines on the market. Electrolux and Indesit machines are not much better.

If your on a budget what about thinking about buying a second hand Bosch, they are still the best machine sout there for the money.

(I am a service engineer, I looked at 11 machines today! so I probably know more than most about modern appliance repair than most).

anyway good luck.

Chris,

You just cant go wrong with modern Zanussi machines, have heard nothing but fab things about them.
I rue the day I left my ZWF1440W with my ex - bet the silly cow has trashed it.

Have friends with modern Lux machines who say they are totally happy with them and that even includes one who was so greatful to scrap her £1200 Dyson "Contraro trash ator" for a normal £220 1200rpm Zanussi Aquacycle.

I grew up with a 1992 Electrolux EWF1130W which got hammered for 8 years. Fab machine that was!

Cant go wrong with a Tricity Bendix/Bendix either as you already know from experience.

Steer clear of Bosch, even the TOL models are just as problematic as the cheap end with their whiny motors that screech and cheap feeling designs.
One friend of ours has a 16/1400rpm (I forget which is its not directly in my interest path) Bosch Maxx thing and is regularly changing the brushes on it which is one b*tch of a job to do.

Have heard that spin once whilst we had a coffee there and vowed I would never ever have a modern Bosch in the collection.

On the other hand, rare as they are why not go for a vintage Hotpoint?

Anything made before July 2000 will serve you very well and be a breeze to repair.

Our first Hotpoint in the collection came from Bradford, the 1985 95620.

Rob

Which?

ronhic's profile picture
Tested that model in their last test.

'...cotton wash is average and the spin is noisy'

Pros: Excellent 40ºC easy-care cleaning, low water and energy use on cotton program

Cons: Noisy spin, no extra rinse option

They rated

cottons - ***
Easy care - *****

Now having said that, I have 2 Zanussi based machines and really like them, though one is starting to get a little noisy in the suspension, it has done a lot of work in 3yrs (upwards of 20 loads a week sometimes)

Neither has given any trouble and given that one is in a rental property, that is a good thing too...

£4 Hotpoint brushes vs £25 for Bosch brushes not to mention the time needed to fit said Bosch brushes puts me right off if the darn thing goes wrong.

You say you looked 11 machines today?
What kinds of machines and what faults did you come across,

Your certainly quick at repairing and even quicker at looking, perhaps you have some trade secrets your willing to share?
Maybe set up a thread and let us in on some secrets so we can all learn how to do it like the pros?

That would be just fabulous and im sure others will agree.

Get that Zanussi. My sister has (well, had, long story involving a split up) that Zanussi, she got it for about £230 in the sale and it's a great machine from what I've seen of it, and better than anything else she could have got for the price.

The Hotpoints, well I can't say ours was reliable, but in the amount of repairs it had it probably cost less than it would to do one repair on the Bosch. That was the real character of those Hotpoint's. Our Bosch needed a PCB replacing after 3 years (not the machine's fault, dumb arse builders kept it outside for 2 weeks without our knowledge in November weather), and whilst it was a reliable machine the PCB board alone cost something stupid to replace, whereas the timer when it was replaced on the Hotpoint cost something stupidly cheap.

Our WM64 certainly wasn't as reliable or well performing as older Hotpoints (nana's WM25 was much much better), but it did the job for 4 years and whilst it did break down quite a bit (usually was brushes), and nowhere near as good as our Bosch was (which wasn't as good as the Zanussi and Miele mum's had after), nothing less than a tenner and an hour of our own time without calling out engineers that got it back up and running again. That was the real charm with the GEC Hotpoints.

On the same basis, for the price I think that Electrolux based machines are better than equivalent spec Bosch machines out there on the market - for the fact that Electrolux machines are more servicable and parts are cheaper, and they generally perform better.

Jon

Door On Aqualtis

Hi Mike.

Thanks for advice. I can not find the receipt for my machine. If I think correct it must be nearly 4-5 years old, maybe more on the 5 year old side. To buy a new door would be £114, but have no idea how to fit it.

At this moment in time it is working ok, but knowing my luck it wont work again next time I use it.

Hi Chris.
I lived in an old weavers cottage on Tentercroft (West Lane ) for a while .
Then, I bought a house in Charlestown (Otley road ) by the Shoulder of mutton pub.
I know The Angel pub and the Malt shovel next to it.
Baildon Green is close to Shipley Glen.
Is that victorian tram running up to the top of Shipley Glen still ? I used to love that ride up and down that hill.
Jacksons was near the top of Darley Street(righthand side walking up)from the city centre.
It was a really good china and glassware shop.
Do you live right in the centre of the city ?
On Sunbridge Road ?
I used to work in Britannia House for years -Bradford City Councils- Directorate of Finance Dept.
Regards.
Louis.

Would love to know more about it, what type of agi did it have?? was it a black one or the newer two stage grey?? I think the model would have been MK55, the last one made, are you aware if it had a soap dispenser tray at the back LHS??

Hi Louis,

Baildon Green isn't really THAT close to Shipley Glen. It's more lower Baildon. Yes, the tram way is still up and running. I went to school right next to the bottom of that tram. The Malt is my local - I go in there all the time with my Dad. I live oposite centenary square on Broadway. It doesn't get more central than that lol.

Hi Mike.
My mum had a white Servis Top loader poss from 1968-9. I remember it from the 1970's until it passed away 1979 .
It had a pale blue/grey drum and pale blue/grey agitator that had a snap on .
The pullout filter was red and dark blue and situated at the
1 o'clock postion above the drum (looking down ).
The control panel was black with chrome trim and all the 5 dials were chrome - 2 programme timer .
The switches were from left to right -
1. Powder- any or bio.
2.The main wash timer.
3.Thermostat -Cold / warm /handhot/hot/ v. hot.
4.Load size .
5.Spin - short or long.
Im guessing the wash capacity was about 10-12lbs.
No soap dispenser though.
The spin speed was approx 650rpm.
Oh, it also had the Servis badge on the front of the machine.
Ive seen the Servis top loader pic you have ( I think its yours ) pale blue fascia . Its the same except mums was a slightly larger machine.
It had self level/wheels handle under the bottom front of the machine.
Mike ,I loved that machine.
It was taken in part exchange for a front loader.
Hope all this helps. If you have a pic or photo of one then PLEASE let me know. I havent seen one since !
Kindest regards.
Louis.

Saltaire Grammar school ?
I went to St Bedes R.C Boys Grammar in Heaton (1976-79)

Ok, so its not that far from Shipley Glen.
Lower Baildon - Yes ,you are right. Sorry Chris.

So you are bang in the centre of Bradford.
I know that centenary square has changed alot.
New bars .etc... No more Odeon though.
Have you decided which washing machine you are going for ?
Kindest regards.

Hi Chris,
Hope you got a new machine,

Its amazing to me reading these posts, some of you guys obviously have an encyclopedic knowledge of old machines yet without meaning to be rude know nothing about the reliability/ quality of modern appliances and different makes. Judgement are based on "my aunt had one that lasted for years etc".
But I suppose that is only to be expected unless you are looking at faulty machines 6 days a week.

anyway what did you get in the end?.
