Well I have been wanting a new dishwasher as mine was just not cutting it was cheap and plastic and I just did not like it. Well my friend remodels houses and he found this in a home he was remodeling. It had never been run in fact it was not even wired but there was a water line to it but no power. It was in the mother in-laws quarters attached to there massive mansion. Well I went and got it today and put it in my kitchen immediately it is everything I have ever wanted in a dishwasher.

The inside is spotless. Anyone know the year of this.

Can you smell what's cooking?

I bet that machine still has the new dishwasher smell to it!
This machine will last you at least 30 years with just reasonable care. Just start collecting some spare parts for it while you can. Get yourself 2 shaft seal kits and at least as many washarm supports which include the fine mesh filter housing. A spare washarm would help too.

These machines were produced for a good number of years. The last ones made by Whirlpool, but with the Hobart design just like you see, it had the bituminous sheets covering the whole tank, top sides and most of the bottom and inside the door then a layer of fiberglass. These were far quieter than the same machines built by Hobart. If yours is a true Hobart unit, you can buy some dynamat and wrap the tank the same way and really insulate it. I was surprised at how much quieter ours is than the 18 it replaced(the 18 I had used a 20 series tank).

The 21 series was produced from Approx April '84 thru Feb of '89.

In my opinion, it was the best designed machine ever made by Hobart and cleans better than anything they ever made before or since!
I AM partial to the 18's like most of the people on this site because of its cleaning ability and the multiple prewashes and washes as well as the 2 or 3 after rinses it provides. The short cycle provides 2 after rinses and all other full cycles use 3 rinses. And does it all faster than the 21.
The 21 provides basically a purge after the 2nd wash and then one final rinse.
The fine filtration system and the mini garbage sisposer in the 21 is unsurpassed by anything before or since its use in a domestic or commercial undercounter dishwasher.

There should be a small date code on the front cross member near the water inlet valve. It will give you the day and year the machine was built. If it is an early production unit, it will have the round shaped Hobart built reversing motor. If it is a slab sided motor, it is the Emerson built motor that was used in later models.
(Hobart still uses the 18-20 series motors and pumps in their current production SR24 series dishwashers). Too bad it wasnt the reversing style pump..we would have had an alternate source for replacement parts for the future!)

A Monterey!

I bought this for my Mom on Mother's Day in 1985. To replace the Superba we got her for Mother's day in 1966. I was home for a visit and she turned it on after dinner. It sounded like a train coming thru the house. I called the appliance store near them and had them deliver it as a surprise. It was black just like this one. The old Superba I remember as a kid I used to see how many dishes I could get in it and how dirty I could leave them and still have it get everything clean. I never beat it, it got everything clean every time. We used to put empty jars in the load to see it take the labels off. It did every time. We have a Bosch now, it is good but nothing like these old machines.

lol

I am so weird I do not want dirty dishes in it. I have waited so long for something like this. I do hope I get over it. After its cycle I wipe off all the gaskets and the inside. As well as the detergent cups lol.

how do you have a dishwasher for 20 years and never touch it

I have a friend who has a dishwasher in her kitchen when the house was built, and 30 years later has never been turned on or opened, not even to store dishes, every time I go over to visit I just stare at it in brand new condition, she does not like them, always washed dishes by hand, thats nuts, there were days I would have killed to have one...

That is exactly the same one I recently put in my kitchen. You will love it. It washes better than any machine I've ever had. I will enjoy it I'm sure.

Yogi I totally agree with you! One of my mom's friends from way back had a KDS-17 in bright yellow that she used to store her nick nacks. She bought her house in 1974 and said she used it twice! Unfortunately the house was sold in the 90s so God only knows what happened to the machine. I only hope whoever bought it was impressed enough to keep it!

i am the same way

i don't wash any clothes in my 1965 rollermatic, i run it for fun now and then but it is a "collector item" to me.

of all my 18 kitchenaids i only use two! the stainless tub kd-17a cause i figure that tub can never wear out and the kd-5 top loader cause i know i can get and already have tons of parts for it! but the rest of my dishwashers, never! my kd-12 i turn on occasionally but it never washes a load!

so "appliances4m3" i can relate!!!
