What ideas do you guys have out there for your dishwasher other than washing dishes? Some may not have to run a full cycle, maybe only a rinse hold will do, who knows?

I have:

steamed fish in mine

washed brik/brak nick nacs

sterilized toothbrushes and sponges(also, veg steemer does same)

rinsed silk flower arangements

cleaned fabric softner dispenser

washed baseball caps

sterilized/preheated jars for canning

cleaned filters --hepa type, aquarium, stove hood, vacuum, exhaust fans, dryers,

baby/childs plastic toys

globes from chandeliers, ceiling fans

for tall tub owners -- shelves from fridge, grates from grills

and then there are people (not me) who put their dentures in there, battery operated personal devices, handcuffs(sometimes me...lol), sneakers, bird feeders, etc.

What do you guys use yours for, out of the ordinary?

just find that it can get into all those nooks and crannies better than handwashing and a toothbrush.........

my brother even wants to put a dishwasher in the garage as an automatic parts washer!..I wonder if it would work? he does put his wrenches in there to make them shine and clean all the grease and oil off...who knew

Garage uses!

I have used many different machines in my garage or in my Mom's basement years ago to wash my tools, car parts, wheel covers, Barbeque grills and fire plates, etc. Clean my oil pans as well, after I discard the oil at a reclamation center of course!
While most of the grease is carried down the drain, there is always some residual under where the door lips into the tank which I will wipe clean with a rag soaked in Dawn. Does a great job and makes it smell nice again.

Electronic air cleaner

The only thing I put in my Bosch DW is my HUGE Kenmore Electronic's air cleaner cell. This thing is SOOO big that it's on wheels. Takes the whole top rack if the DW, LOVE it ....Bill in Az.....

IBM used to have lots of Maytag(I think) DW in their keyboard repair department. They would come out all nice and clean, and after washing about 80% of the dead ones worked again.

At least that is what I was once told.

I've used mine to clean my trash barrels, mop bucket, and fridge shelves. Nothing unusual here!

Back when I was working resturants we had one of those continuous convayer type dishwashers. We would run just about everything in the resturant through the machine to sanatize and clean it. We would run the booster chairs and high chairs through at least once a day. We also ran the grease filters over the grill through the last batch of the night before we dumped the tank and refilled the dishwasher for the next shift.

At home I put my toothbrushes, vacuum cleaner parts through quite regularly.

Once I put my wire wheel covers in the DW, boy did I catch it from my Mom for that.

I put my computer keyboard in the dishwasher. Leave it to dry for a few days and it's fine :)

The porcelain-on-iron grates of my Frigidaire gas range are described in the owner's manual as being "dishwasher safe", and now and then I pop them in the Bosch DW along with a conventional load and they come out nice and clean.

Have also cleaned soap dishes and the dog's stainless steel food and water bowls in the DW. Also large cooking implements like jelly roll trays and cookie sheets. Never thought about cleaning fridge shelves but I suppose it would work fine. Bosch has a removable upper tray with a tall item sprinkler head that screws on to provide a spray from the upper water inlet opening. Of course you are limited to what you can fit on the lower rack, but it does a nice job cleaning.

Fish tank and... LeCreuset warning!

mysteryclock's profile picture
I've run a fish tank through the dishwasher before (with extra rinsing) to clean and sterilize it before putting the fish back in after the filter broke down and the water got very yucky. The rocks I just hosed off separately.

PassatDoc-- be careful about your porcelain-on-iron grates and any similarly finished items like LeCreuset you put in the dishwasher.

I'd been putting our big blue LeCreuset in the dishwasher for years without any problems. When we started having more buildup problems due to hard water I started adding a bit of Lemishine to the detergent department, and it really did the trick on everything. Unfortunately I didn't read the warning on the Lemishine about porcelain items and put the LeCreuset in one time -- and it came out with a MATTE FINISH on the outside. Oddly, the inside was still shiny (and quite clean), but the finish on the outside is ruined.

I spent several days in the doghouse over that one....

We use it also to wash the dogs food bowls each day and their stainless steel water bowl every other day. Keeps the slime out of the water.

Sue, of Talk Sex With Sue recommended that you wash your toys in the dishwasher, unless they were made of that "realistic" skin material, then you have to wash those by hand.

We also use ours to wash the heating/air conditioning register covers once a year during spring cleaning. It does a great job on those.

Celing Fan light fixtures come out sparkling. I do these three or four times a year.

Dog & Cat dishes are a regular, I didn't even consider them different from a normal load.

I have never cooked with the dishwasher, but I do have the recipe for steamed Salmon. Never brave enough to try it, also thought it a waste because you have to run the machine empty with no detergent. Unless I was going to do a whole load of salmon at one time, I could just as easily use the steamer. IMO.

I thought I was the strange one who put odd things in there...

need to invent one to wash my dog...just need a hole for his head to hang out...he would get washed everyday....lol....kinda like a carwash for dogs..at least small ones like dachshunds...

also learned you can wash a cat and get the toilet clean at the same time if you put him in there and stand on the lid and flush a few times...just open the back door and stand back when you let him out...lol

salmons ... sneakers ....

Cookin' fishes in a DW .... tonight I'll try to wash up with the oven or the fridge ;-)

I wash sneakers (in the c l o t h e s frontloader) always before running a boilwash load. I'd never dry them in a tumbler, find that not so hygenical

Washing them in the same dishwasher I use in the kitchen is outside the borders of my mind !! :-)

Yet there are "dishwasher-like" washers with special fitted racks to wash surgery clogs.
Lab-washers can wash also surgery utensils, dental care utensils (hope not the same clog machine...).
Other similar machines can wash motherboards, chips or pecision mechanical items.
I know about Smeg and Miele ones. Are there other brands ?

that's what I'm talking about....more than just dishes...multi-purpose...

the kids have these plastic clog shoes that they wear outside all the time....just toss in DW and they clean up in no time...

I also put the plants and ornaments from my aquarium in there too!

never thought to put my waterproof electric razor in there...that's genious!

NOW OFF SUBJECT: How many of you guys wash your paper money and iron it flat to fit perfect in your wallet?....my nephew does!

keep them coming guys...think outside the box!

I wash mopheads in the dishwasher, I dont like sponge mops, I have a mop handle I got at an auction and some one at work hooked me up with 2 or 3 mop heads so I wash them in the dishwasher.
I always washed my wire hubcaps from my Buick LeSabre in there too.
I have run the hedge clippers and my small gardening shovels through the dishwasher

In the past if I had a bad burn or a deep cut I would put gauze pads in a mason jar and seal and run through the dishwasher to sterilize it so I could have sterile dressing. You can do this with anything that will fit in a mason jar and can hold up to the heat.

And to answer your question Martin,
I have never washed money but I do starch and press it so it is crisp and wrinkle free.

I take apart my IBM Model M (Clicky) keyboards and run the non-electrical parts through the dishwasher. I have also washed outer cases and cover of typewriters. I also clean the range hood filter in the dishwasher

I too have washed nick nacks, light covers, in the dishwasher as well. I haven't washed the detergent drawer for my Frigidaire in the dishwasher, but I have thought about it. I'm going to run the filter for my Maytag 806 through it sometime.

In the radio biz-I have used and others I know have used a dishwasher to clean some transmitter parts-such as small power tubes and vacuum capacitors. The dishwasher also cleaned used audio patchpanels well-just rinse them with a solvent degreaser top get rid of any remaining detergent residue to aviod corrosion.the Hotpoint dishwasher in my apartment at the time worked well. The water spray blasted the cooked bugs out of the power tube fins.Large tubes are too heavy to put in the machine. If they are really bad-wash their radiators in the sink or use an air blast gun.Its surprizing how many cooked bugs and pecies of cooked lint get in the power tube cooling fins-despite there are air filters on the transmitters air intake.

Making Bread....

When i make fresh bread you have to knead the dough and then leave it "somewhere warm" for two hours to let the dough 'prove'...the perfect place i have found is the inside of my Neff Integrated Dishwasher just after it's done a 30min Quick Wash....Makes an AWESOME loaf!!

place in a bag you use for the washer to was delicates, use the top rack of the dishwasher, use a light or rinse/hold cycle, my machine has a fine crystal cycle which airates the water to a gentle stream, go easy on the detergent(it contains bleach), or use a teaspoon of BORAX, or put in some TANG or squeeze a lemon in there, they'll smell fresh, and then just keep checking them every few minutes thru out and pull them out when clean...put in a vase outside (moderate sun), sometimes you have to fluff them up, like ferns...and then your done...........becareful of anything that may be glued...if the dishwasher can't get a skinny vase clean, fill it with hot water and drop in a denture tablet...

TANG(yes, what the astronauts drink) will also clean out the scum in your dishwasher, think whats it doing to your insides? scary!

this is great for plastic plants and fruit....just wash them in a delicates bag....works for those who recycle plastic ware instead of throwing them out! and they don't fly all over the machine.....

Next weeks thread will be on "Grooming your Bear"...or maybe hints on what to do with those darn ole' holiday leftovers....lol...or maybe How to decorate rich, rich, rich, when your not, not ,not!!!...looking forward to your responses

I use my DW to clean my oven racks. The oven is 30" wide(75cm). Works in a typical/standard 24" square (60cm square) DW if one tilts the racks on a 45* angle.

If I had a DEDICATED (non-food related) DW I'd use it to clean

bird cage
toilet seat
window blinds
small window screens
garden hose and nozzles
garden tools
vacuum cleaner parts

My friend, Linda still pre-washes her dishes before loading them. She would just DIE if she saw how I load my Bosch. Pot and pans only get scraped. I asked her, Do you pre-wash the clothes in the bathtub before putting them in the washer? No responce yet.....Bill....

~Toggles...wouldn't the sani-cycle clean these items and sterilize the dishwasher also, maybe even add a little bleach...

A girl's gotta have her standards...........

Perhaps there have been dirtier things in my mouth, but I look at it this way: No matter how well-sanitized the toilet is, I'd have a hard time eating or drinking from it.
I'm just not comfortable using the DW as a toilet or a garbage can.

My aunt is a neat freak, and she pretty much washes everything before it goes into the dishwasher. One time me and my partner had them over along with both both of our parents for dinner, and I loaded the dirty dishes right into the Maytag dishwasher with out pre rinsing them or anything, she about died! It was priceless seeing her face when she saw everything dripping inside the dishwasher!

I run all my shelves from the fridge in the dishwasher twice a year.. I never thought about my oven racks... Will have to try that next time I run the clean cycle.

Some moments are a Kodak moment.

I've never been able to understand the logic behind washing dishes before washing dishes in the dishwasher. It seems to me that the job description of a dishwasher is to wash dishes.

Technically may need to be written as "hot-water heater", indicating with the hyphen that the two words togehter are fuctioning as an adjective to modify the noun following.

In theory and liguistically a hydronic boiler is also a water heater.

~It seems to me that the job description of a dishwasher is to wash dishes.

NO! *SMACK* you are mistaken. A dishwasher is to rinse, santize and dry dishes and store them until they can be put away. Where have you been? *LOL* Remember the primal instinct to play with (the) water is apparently exceedingly diffucult to overcome. (ducks and runs).

I ran all my vacuum cleaner attachment through a light wash today. This included the sani emptor from the Kirby upright. I wasn't sure about washing them in very hot water so I turned the cold water on a little bit to cool the water down. Everything came nice a clean and looking new again.
