Looking for a timer for a Maytag Model A407 Series 01
Serial # 360845WY. Anybody got an extra laying around from parts maybe? It's for a friends mothers machine. Would like to keep it running.
Thanks
Jon

Yeah, motors are still somewhat available if the timer and escapement are still fine.

Is it not advancing?

Timer issues

Yes I guess the problem is it doesn't advance. Really don't have the time to take it apart to check the motor. Was just looking to replace the whole thing. I took some pics this morning and the dial is half for the washing cycle and the other half is for the soak cycle. There are three buttons on the panel for normal wash, permanent press and gentle. Plus I need a couple of buttons for the large and exlarge water levels.
Thanks
Jon

So nobody has an extra timer around for this machine. I thought maybe someone had one from a tear down or a parts donor. Machine is in good shape for being 35 years old. The woman is 85 years old and I don't want her to try and have to learn a new machine. Will check the link for the new one on ebay but was hoping to get something cheaper.
Thanks.Jon

Well after going out and trying to work on the old timer I decided to see what it was not doing. When you put it to the start of the cycle to fill it would fill but the agitator would start. It would stop filling when it got to the point it was set at but would just continue washing, had to advance timer to get it to drain and spin. Decided it wasn't worth playing with so thanks to qsd-dan we ordered a timer through that link. Should be here in a few days. Thanks to all for the help and info and links.
Thanks Jon

Whoa, I wish you would have described the situation earlier like you just did. It might have just been a bad lid switch.

Post# 357521 , Reply# 12   6/16/2009 at 15:28 (5,421 days old) by retro-man (- boston,ma)

Would a lid switch cause all these problems? How would you test this to see if this is the cause?
Thanks
Jon

take the wires off the lid switch and slide them together, tape them up, and try the machine, if it works, theres your problem, if not, reconnect it!

Ok so took out the old timer and went one by one on the wires from the old to the new. Only problem is that there is one more wire than terminal. This is not a sussaver model any ideas why this might be. Stuck at the moment on repair. Timer part #'s match up from old to new. Any help would be appreciated.
thanks

So what do the cycle buttons do, speeds? and if so what speeds are assigned to each cycle?

Post# 358774 , Reply# 17   6/22/2009 at 16:42 (5,415 days old) by retro-man (- boston,ma)

Cycle buttons are pp which i would imagine would be regular wash with a slow spin, regular wash which would be high speed wash and spin and gentle cycle which would be slow wash and slow spin.
Thanks toggles
Jon

Wiring Diagram

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for this machine? Is there possibly one on the machine. Possibly on the back panel? It's tough that this machine is in a different town.
Thanks
Jon

Yes. I won't be able to scan and post it until tomorrow though.

Wiring diagram is usually pasted to the outer tub. remove the 2 screws at the bottom about 3 inches from the floor (they face downward pointing to the floor. Swing the bottom panel out to release the clips from the top edge. You should see the schematic pasted to the outer tub facing you. Check the left and right sides of the timer for terminals....also check where the mounting holes are for the timer screws...there are sometimes terminals there too. Which color wire of wire # is it? Hope this helps!

Does this machine have a pilot light? I show 2 different schematics, one with and one without a pilot light. None of my big manuals have the schematics, it's one of my small ones. The scan will come out pretty freakin small. Hope you can zoom in on the scan. I haven't quite learned how to blow pics up from a scan yet.

Ah hell, I'll just scan both models. No biggie.

Thank you for the scans

I was able to copy and enlarge them. After understanding what went were I was able to figure it out. There was one heavily insulated grey wire that come to find out was the line ground for the timer. Was able to find the terminal for that along with the terminal for the cycles which was on a seperate block attached to the timer. Hooked it all up and did a test run and the machine runs like new again. Yeah!! Thanks to everyone for their input. She is very happy her old maytag is up and running again. Her daughter and 2 grandchildren just arrived yesterday to spend the summer with her, so it will be getting a good workout.
Thanks
Jon

He should be able to replace the timer easily on that machine. The new one only took 4 days to arrive from ordering.I did find the wiring diagram as we were putting the console back together. It was on the back wall of the console. Package up looked like new. Good luck snowgirl with your project.

one more question, will the timer part 204889 fit my a408 if i need that part? i'm hoping it's just the lid switch...

Yes, as long as you have "Permanent Press."

BTW, Welcome!

What's it doing, that you suspect the lid switch?

Post# 361697 , Reply# 30   7/4/2009 at 17:08 (5,403 days old) by snowgirl ()

it's doing the same thing described earlier in this thread...agitates as soon as i start it up...but i do suspect it's the timer, it doesn't seem to be advancing to the next cycle..it only goes so far, then i need to move it to spin, rinse, etc. will have hubby read through this next week, when he goes on vacation. again...thank you all for the help, i love my old maytag, and would rather not replace it.

The Permanent Press,Gentle and Regular buttons on an A406 have nothing to do with wash or spin speed, as this is stricktly a one speed washer.
The buttons report to the timer, not the motor, and tell it how long to agitate or pause and how long to spin or how to partial spin and refill as in perm press cooldown. A really good machine, a fabric matic, but not a two speed.
