My 1960 Pink Frigidaire Refrigerator/Freezer (Model# FPI-15B-60) has stopped cooling, and my repairman said it could be one of two things. It could be a leak or the evaporators may need replacing.

He said they can drain the R12 freon and replace it with a substitute and change out the dryer filter at the same time (at a cost of $200+), but this may not fix the problem.

The alternative is replacing both evaporators (this model had one for the freezer and one for the fridge, behind the food compartment). He said he would not even begin to know where to get evaporators, nor would he know how to replace them even if I can find the parts.

Suggestions? Any advice is appreciated. I really want this machine to work - it's in spectacular physical condition. I'm located in a suburb of Buffalo, NY.

I would have him check it for a leak first. Eliminate that from the list.
I don't think you'll have much luck finding those parts, but never say never.

When I was in vocational school in the late 70s, there was a new epoxy for patching aluminum evaporators that seemed to work well.
The first step is to find the leak!

You may have to resort to what it seems is a common practice amoungst vintage appliance "geeks". Find a same or similar model parts wise of your appliance, and between the two build one great appliance, plus have spare parts.

Seems a shame, but in the absence of fresh spare parts....

Is this your fridge?

Why not try:

One of those vintage fridge restoration places such as:

www.antiqueappliances.com/restore...

Whenever I hear "No fix for this" it irritates me. Don't ask a general repair guy for vintage parts, go to where they are doing restorations.

I live just a few miles away from the Chino Air Museum Planes of Fame, a vintage museum where the planes actually fly. I used to pop in on a guy that was restoring a P-51 Mustang with its original Allison engine. That plane now flies all over.

If a guy can restore a 1945 plane to FLYING condition, you can find some evaporators that will work on your fridge. Don't give up and don't take no for an answer.

(Still using my 1963 GE Fridge!)
