The planets aligned this afternoon and we went and got a nice set of Lady Kenmore portables! I've been searching for a bit (all your fault NorfolkSouthern!) for the washer at least (in belt drive) after researching it a bit. Thing's built like a tank and with weight to prove it. The dryer is the matching mate as well which is probably pretty rare too. Both are in great shape aside from some lint built up in the dryer and general scuff marks. Washer squeals a little here and there but seems to work well, it's a 2 speed. Dryer is very tidy, but lots of lint build up inside. I got lucky too, they were literally down the street from work, turns out I know the daughter that was selling these on CL. I've posted a link of what I have so far, my camera battery is cooked so better pics and vids when the new battery gets here. I'm so excited!

Very nice!

Congrats on your little set! 1988 is the year of these? Did I read that correctly? I have the identical washer from 1984. Very solid machines that do a very nice job. Don't expect to fit much in them though. If I remember the literature correctly the washer tub size is only about 1.83 cubic feet. A couple of pairs of jeans will fill it!

Not sure what kind of squeaking it's doing. Perhaps check the suspension spring bolts underneath the washer and make sure they are all tight. Sometimes those can jiggle loose and cause things to be a little noisy. Otherwise enjoy! They are a lot of fun!

What a great matched set! They are older than 1988 aren't
they? Is the dryer 110 or 220?

Thanks for the complement, macboy. Yes, these belt-drive portables are indeed worth having in the collection. As for the squeals: Is this mainly during spin? If so, then my Whirlpool does the same thing. The springs are tight, as is the belt. Overall, everything down there is in great shape. You can check and see if anything needs to be tightened, but for now you probably shouldn't worry too much about it. That gets me to thinking... I really should get that new timer for my Whirlpool!

Squeaking

macboy91si's profile picture
It's periodic and may very well be from sitting a while. Sometimes in wash it will squeak (very light) and always in the ramp up in fast spin. Once the tub reaches speed in the spin cycle the machine is literally silent and with no clothes in it, perfectly balanced.

They are older than 1988 but I'm unsure of they're exact year. The dryer is 110v.

Product Numbers

Washer
Model: 84090130
Serial: J12046802

Dryer
Model: 88090100
Serial: M12046200

Thanks, and when I get my battery I'll be making vids.

I also aquired a "new" Maytag A50/DE50 set that I need to post, it's been a good month!

Jons1077 these are defrinately NOT 1988 models

appliguy's profile picture
for one thing all belt drive Whirlpppol made washers had ceased production by the end of 1986....also Kenmore stopped putting the year of manufacture as the first 2 numbers of the model number in 1973 (I believe the last year that setup was used was 1972 right guys?). I think these models are circa 1978......PAT COFFEY

Going by the digits of serial numbers, they're either 1971 or 81. I don't know enough difference to tell from there as those could probably be either. I would guess 81 based on not having the door handle on the washer, but I just don't know for sure. Someone with better info than I might know from the model number.

Another free tip:

If you want to stack these, the stacking shelf that Sears still carries should let you stack them in a way that permits portable use. If you are going to semi-permanently install them, RepairClinic lists the almond bolt-together set as still available and white as discontinued and unavailable. See the link. That allows them to be bolted together, and could be painted white. If it's actually still available, it's a worthwhile purchase. The next time I've got an extra C-note, I had planned on checking if this really was still there. I can't use them that way now, but thinking ahead...

If you've got a pile of W/D sets, stacking them could save space. I've seen collections on here literally filling a barn, so going up could be valuable!

Dates

macboy91si's profile picture
I didn't realize that the "110." was part of the product number!

The washer and dryer are both late May 1981 according to Appliance411.com's lookup system (20th week of 71 or 81, it's not a 71 I know).

Also, does anyone know the part number for the sink kit for the portables? It has only permanent hoses with it. I was also curious, the MANUAL FILL option on the control panel is the WARM/WARM setting, could I not just use 1 hose with a Quick connect on the COLD port and set it to COLD/COLD for now? I'm going to plumb it in, but I'd like to get the kit for it to make it portable again in case I move. I was just wondering about using the 1 port (COLD) for now until I can go to Lowe's.

Thanks

-Tim

Stacking kit

macboy91si's profile picture
Is this kit specifically for the Kenmore/Whirlpool portables? How does it work exactly, I'm not against shooting the kit with some appliance white by any means, stackable would be great. I was also curious about that rack that Sears still sells and weather or not the washer would fit under the dryer since they don't give dimensions of the unit. I know the NEW Kenmore portables are 20" ish with instead of 24" like this one.

My 24" DD portable fits perfectly between the lower rails of the current one from Sears. It is specific to the Whirlpool built ones in that the holes match up to the WP compact dryer. It still permits the washer to roll out while keeping the dryer stationary. The bolt-together kit (almond) that I posted above bolts them together, and they shouldn't be used as portables that way, the dryer vent being a pretty stationary item. It's specific only to the 24" wide Whirlpool built washers and dryers together.

My DD portable looks almost identical to this BD one. There is someone else on here that has one even closer than mine.

ok sorry for the wrong guess on the year. I assumed mine was from 1984 since the 1st two digits are 84 on the model number. The literature also happened to be of the same year. Either way they are nice!

Venting

macboy91si's profile picture
I'm not at all used to have a DRYER in the house, how would you vent this? The portability is nice, but I'm nowhere near a window and it'd be nice to keep the set together. It has a full size 4" vent outlet on the back. The LK Dryer after cleaning the lint out of it, dries 2 small loads from the LK washer in about 40 minutes which is 6 white T-shirt, 10 socks, and a couple of odds n ends. I'm impressed, and it's so quiet!

The Maytag DE-50 on a side note, has a 3" vent on the back which is very hard to find any tubing for. The Maytag DE50 dryer does a laundry basket's worth of A50 laundry dry in ~60 minutes. I'm very impressed with it as well considering it size. My New Haier 1100w dryer (110v) takes 90-120min to dry on auto sense mode. 60 minutes on HIGH won't dry a damn thing. Both the Maytag and the LK heat the kitchen up by more than 15 degrees whereas the Haier doesn't raise the temp any hardly only the humidity. Amazing how well "energy efficient" works not to get on that rant though.

Im jelous lol..If you use the cold fill only you need a cap on the hot water inlet so it wont drip, you can get one online or at a parts store for a couple bucks.
Id love to see a vid if you have one.

As for the maytag 3" vant try Home Depot or Lowes or even a hardware store should have 3" vant pipe.
I know our Homo Depot has 3" elbows and vent hoses that the Bathroom vent fans use.
Hope this helps =)

For mine I simply got a 3" to 4" trasnsition piece ("adapter").

DE-50

macboy91si's profile picture
That's what I was actually thinking about Toggles with the 3-4" converter.

Peter how old is that LK? I like the control panel on it.

The LK dryer works the charm, I HATE that lint filter though. Man what an odd place for a lint filter, but it does work well.

I'd have to say the best dryer I have is the DE-50. That thing's insane, almost as fast a full size dryer. Is the DE-50 a "Halo-of-Heat" mini? I noticed that the element was situated up front.

The LK is nice still, it does hold a lot more, actually it holds a lot more than the LK washer. I also looks like the LK dryer is pretty much the same as the new 110v driers that Sears sells so parts should be easier to find.

Can you tighten the belt on the washer somehow, how do you even get to it? The washer has a very strange cabinet? The washer squeals up to speed in spin and chirp-chirps under larger loads. There's a lot of noise coming from the machine, I don't know how loud they're supposed to be, I certainly don't want to damage anything.
