Another addition to the collection is this 1982 Zanussi Z919T Washcraft

1000rpm

In amazing condition although a couple of easily ironable faults.

Bearings have started to go so this will be Zanussi bearing change no.2. So glad we know what to do what with the Liberators bearings being done a few months ago.

Also the screw that fastens to dial to the timer is rather loose - so much so that the "Pull On Push Off" mechanism wont work properly.

Does anyone have any idea how to remove the dial from the fascia allowing me to tighten the screw inside to fix the timer properly?

Pics to follow

Excuse the suds in the pic above, Marks and Spencers Biological powder likes to froth up in this machine.

40 degrees delicate wash, in the cool down phase,

hi aquarius1984,

Nice looking machine.
Had a job a few months ago to repair the outer dial cover and the inner cam (the plastic teeth brake off the inner cam).
Easy one I thought but the outer dial is now obsolete with Distriparts, I tried ringing around nearly ever Service Force centre in the country until I found a center that had one in stock in the warehouse!. Im sure I got the last one in the country Im affraid.

If your going to take the dial to pieces be carefull!

dont worry guys.

if the dial thing looks too difficult (and it does look like it would be a major thing to take apart) then it will be left as it is, until the day that we have the parts and expertese to deal with it confidently.

the machine is still easy to operate , but just requires a bit of jiggling to get the on/off mechanism to mesh.
nothing major - just an irritation.

we will keep our eyes peeled for spares bits and bobs and any advice, on top of the above, would be gratefully received.

just before i pop off for the night and as this is a Washcraft thread, here we find a FL800 on ebay!

10hrs left.

I asume that this a crossover machine, what with it being prefixed 'FL' rather than 'Z'?

On the lookout for pone of these now - a Z930 Sensor!

Chrome door dryers do appear to be very rare. indeed, the vast majority of Z-series dryer pics i possess tend to be black door trimmed.

still trying to fathom the zanussi z-series model numbering.
strange how they mix the washers and dryers amongst one another, with seemingly no real strategy behind it.

Nice find guys, great machines, very quiet with those big induction motors, those programme controls where one of the most difficult to use I thought, very stiff and so small to grip...but being small caused another set of problems, because you could grip it by wrapping your hand around it, many people used to much force and broke the ratchets!!

Will look stunning with the matching dryer on top, good luck with the hunt!!

Hey Guys

If it has actually been in Gravesend it would have had a new home by now :(.

Paul- it must indeed be a crossover- possibly one of the 1st series of FL machines?- it would be interesting to know if it uses a carbon brush motor as opposed to the induction Washcraft type.

Congrats on the Z919T by the way- can I just ask why you had a vent hose in the drum lol ;).

Our local rip off British Heart foundation actually had a brown/black trim Washcraft dryer in at the mo- im not gonna pay £85 for it though!!!!!

surprising timers !

Haven't ever seen them in other machines than zannies

Usually timers have the prewash routine before the longest wash (in this machine is "B" )

Only some vintage mieles (W720 ?) had short cottons + prewash, but this feature was chosen via a third selector.
This zanny is a one-knob machine and the knob is a timer, not a selector : that's amazing !!

These zanussi timers can have a prewash even in intermediate positions : note setting "D" : 60°C wash with prewash

Also zanussi diswahers of the age had this kind of timers, so that intensive and normal had both prewash, but intensive had a longer washing time

My Mum had a very similar model...although I think it could have had a silver control pannel as well as a silver door...until about 1993 when it flooded the kitchen. She's since said it was the best washer she ever had.

knob

Paul I know a long time ago, I jokingly talked of a radar device for tracking down vintage stuff, well you might have let on that you'd got one lol. Bring it down and we can test it in these barron parts.

Yes don't breath on that timmer knob, if it doesn't brake the lettering will rub off, I've seen this on many a zanussi over the years. And believe bertrum, there are no spares in the country, my Aunt and uncle ran the matching dishwasher for a year or two with pliers before giving up. Having said that now, knowing my luck, of course Ebay will be full of closing repair shops with loads of them, so go carefull.

But yes another triumph, well done, and you know how to do the bearings after the hotussi. Get up off the floor Paul, oh and thats almost a photo of you in the chrome. And Rob I can sense how hot that wash water is lol. See you both soon.

Mathew

Nice condition -comestically.
Zanussi styling in the late 70's early 80's are among my favs.
Well-anything with a chrome door from that era.
Great water level with your Zanussi.
Look forward to you uploading this machine on YT.
Regards.
Louis.

Hi guys.

thanks for the kind words and also the advice.

we had a look at its construction last friday - just after the machine finished its test load.

The way the machine is put together is defiantely not for the faint hearted, around the programmer area.

from the looks of things, the front of the dial is a removable cap, the removal of which (we assume) gives access to the relevant screws etc to enable the dial etc to be removed and programmer removed from the back.

put simply, this cap was not for moving and i wont be forcing it.

The machine will definately be treated with kid gloves!

cheers
paul

Hi Mike.

Great to hear from you and hope all is well.
Totally agree about the diddy dial.

The ratchet mechanism still feels solid, although the pessimist in me realises that it will give in one day.

The looseness in the dial, making the 'push off' mechanism difficult to engage, is an obvious worry.

gently does it methinks!
Paul

Hi Seamus.

The FL800 is a weird machine.

I really cant fathom why they would retro the bodyshell like that!

That creaseline across the front and the round filter panel just adds years to the way it looks. For me it places it in the mid 1970's!

If anyone knows about this style of Zanny - shout it from the rooftops! be great to know what they were playing at.

Cheers
Paul
p.s the dryer hose is all Rob's fault! now to do with me.
Its actually for the Bendis 7448, but was kept behind when the bendix was placed into store, for usage with a new dryer acquisition which is sat hidden behind the zanussi. Will reveal all shortly.

Post# 362636 , Reply# 27   7/8/2009 at 15:08 (5,399 days old) by matchboxpaul (U.K)

How do Mathew.

We do appear to be a bit lucky with the Zanny dial, in that although its only smudgy in, i think, one place. everywhere else is in fine fettle.

Totally appreciate what you and Mike say - wrapping hands round the small dial, over time, would rub all the letters off. Will have another look at it this weekend - bloody car permitting! grrrrrr

ha ha ha - yep noticed the reflection in the chrome and was more than a wee bit pi$$ed off that my ugly mug kind of ruined the piccy. Will make sure that I get another picccy this weekend - you know how i like things just so (to those who dont know - I dont do pictures with me in them).

I cant remember what wash temperature Rob selected - ROOOOOBBBBBBBBB - what was it?

The acquisition of this Z919T, and learning all about its frailties, makes me regret not investigating that scrap Z918 more. Would have been a useful supply of seemingly important plastic spare parts.

ah well.
will e-mail you soon.
cheers
paul

the warning about the lack of spares has definately hit home - thanks for the heads up.

Will keep my eyes peeled all the harder for bits and bobs for it now.

I'm sure it's the same as the ones that were in all the houses on "Brookside" back in the day.

Think you are right John

Although never a habitual viewer of Brookside, the close was festooned with Zanussi appliances which, conveniently for Zanussi, had non-standard, VERY BIG Zanussi branding on them. Wonder how that got there- bit of free advertsising for them methinks.

The only machines i remember seeing were from the Washcraft series and all seemed to have the blue trimmed lid.
Cant remember whether thay had chrome of black doors though.

I have tried to find some footage of them on Youtube, but to no avail.
One thing i have discovered from Youtube is that they arent there today! Me and Rob were discussing them a while back and wonedered whether Brookside was a 1980s timewarp, with boarded up houses and everything left as was.
From watching a couple of more recent vids it become plain to see that the houses were thoroughly gutted - no Zannys in sight.

Ah well.
Blue trimmed lid posted below.
Cheers
Paul

Brookside Zanussi's

There is some footage around somewhere of the Zanni's in Brookside...there was a brief sub-plot when Jimmy Corkhill's Blue-Trimmed Zanny leaked so he went and brought a second hand machine....also a Zanussi, there was definately some kind of deal between Brookside and Zanussi though in the later years there were some other machines featured, including a Square-door Hoover and, right at the very end of its days on tv, a Dyson Contrarotator...i also recalled the unusually bold Zanussi logo's on them machines, lol.

The Zanussi Washcraft series where never blue trimmed, that was the plastic covering to protect a beautiful chrome trim underneath!!!...LOL

Those where the days when manufacturing meant something and even the worktops where protected!!!

The Brookside set was furnished with electrical goods by the main Zanussi wholesale distributor of the day, who we still use now!! remember the FM6 ovens & such!!! very well made appliances.....Every time I watched Brookie I always wanted to scream "Take the Tape Off, PLEASE"...

Yes Mike that transparent blue protective film was used on a lot of gear, i remember it being used on some old hi-fi aswell.......i can understand you wanting to scream, occasionally i come across an advert for a turntable on ebay and the lister has put the turntable rubber mat the wrong way up and that makes me want to scream "TURN IT OVER" yah drongo........the japanese used to go to great lengths to make there turntable mats look stylish turn them over and they are just plain on the underneath

Thinking back it was a good marketing move on Zanussi's part to supply their equipment, I even remember a foul mouthed drag entertainer a "Ms Savage" used to joke about shop lifting, and escaping from the store detectives with a Zanussi stuffed up her jumper........very funny...............but it got Zanussi to be a household name

Rob

Zanussi was not the only brand name plugged either,

Always amused me at the "chavvy" culture in the last days of Brookside and the blatant advertising of modern diets.

I might be able to source a new timer knob and cover if you are interested.

Great to hear from you and thankyou for the links to the exploded diagrams. Really appreciate them and will print them off at work next week, to put in the machines file.

Myself and Rob would deffo be interested in the possibility of a replacement timer knob and cover. Would be useful if the original ever got damaged - nervous nervous nervous!!!!

e-mail either myself or rob, if the offer is still open, and costs permitting would obviously reimburse you.

Timer knob and cover

Hi Paul,

I've done a bit of investigating and have found the timer knob and cover you require on Espares website, it's not cheap at £12.99 but it's the only place I can find it. (Follow link below) I've bought one myself for my Z9191T should the ratchets wear out.

The picture hopefully shows how it is put together. Very difficult to remove the cover without snapping the plastic clips, unless you can approach the clips from the rear.

The Electrolux part number is 50201169005 if you want to try and source it more cheaply.

Hope it is of some help.

Tom.
