My repair of my 1971 A806 Maytag Washer is becoming a saga ....

Further to my posting in Discuss-O-Mat Thread# 22619 my first wash since doubling up the Stem seal, generated substantial leaks at several points from the top cover seal, despite being very careful to make sure the top seal was pushed down over the outer tub's flared rim. There isn't any breaks or damage that I could see with the existing seal, albeit it is the orginial seal.

I had used half inch plywood spacers to position the top cover over the inner tub, and carefully made sure the seal was properly positioned on the outer tub, or so I thought, before I tightened the top cover clamp.

Would a new tub cover seal (part # 2-11232) be the only solution, or is there a a fail safe way to re-install and make leak proof the existing seal?

thx

I had to use a very small bead of silicone on mine.

A new tub cover seal should be in order. That seal is almost 40 years old!!!

Under normal circumstances a foreign sealer is not needed (i.e. silicone). Get a new seal and make sure you tighten the screws very tight on the clamp. I take a pair of pliers and hold the clamp while turning the screw with a large slotted driver; repeat for the other clamp. I usually tighten them a little bit at a time, working between both making sure the seal is positive around the tub, instead of being stronger on one side than the other.

Good luck,

Ben
