There's a wash plate at the bottom that "wobbles" - almost like a Kenmore Calypso. Robert has one, although his is a Thor.

Unlike the washplates in today's HE machines, this one worked within a full tub of water. The agitation it created in effect caused the water to practically "bounce" off the walls of the outer tub; the perforations of the inner tub would then embellish the water action with a sort of "blowhole" effect, thus cleaning the clothes.

washer action

If you have ever seen a Philco wash, it is very similar, only there is no centerpost to the agitator, can tangle things, but really cleans

The Aaction on that machine is brilliant.
