I wanted to share with you the permanent installation of this never before installed, never before used, 1949 G.E. Electric Sink/Dishwasher.

Over the past almost two months since bringing it back from GregM’s collection in Massachusetts, I have been in the process of getting this machine prepared to install in my present kitchen. It required a thorough cleaning and de-rusting around the cabinet – although not too severe – just minor amounts which easily scrubbed away. The shipping block underneath the motor was removed; new water valve installed to replace the original missing water valve; minor repairs to the lid catch, detergent cup, and the lid lift spring. The drain stopper has been permanently barrowed from the 1948 G.E. Electric Sink/Dishwasher that came from Michael’s (gedish1947) collection. I’ve also run the dishwasher several times while being staged in my solarium (see 2009 Thread #23001 with link to YouTube video). It still has one issue – during testing, the tub seal (where the tub sits inside the sink top) has started leaking slightly in a couple of places. I’m still evaluating the best solution to stop the leaks.

Dating this machine: There is a paper attached to the outside of the sink bowl which is dated 1 14 49 (January 14 1949), and a date of what I believe to be 1-49 (January 1949) is stenciled on the back of the dishwasher tub. The serial number also begins with '49'. I have old G.E. Parts Catalogs for the various Electric Sinks, and this particular model DE748 falls clearly in the 1949 timeframe. The Garbage Disposal model number FA-3ER also is in my G.E. Parts Catalog material, and I can place it too in the 1949 timeframe, plus it's serial number begins with '49'. For a brief period in the late 40's, I believe that G.E. made the year as part of the serial number nomenclature. My G.E. machines dating from 1950 and after don't have a suggestible year as part of the serial number, from what I can determine.

Almost from the beginning, I started making plans for this Electric Sink. It is my ultimate Dream Machine. It’s my 1 year anniversary today, July 22nd. When I typed my memories on that day, I recounted my memories of the G.E. Electric Sink that my relatives had. I so much wanted to install this machine in my existing Kitchen. So I also started making preparations to make this happen. First, after considering several alternatives, the best solution was to remove a single base cabinet to the left of my range, which would open up enough space in front of the picture window to place the unit. Next, I started planning how to run hot and cold water to the sink, and how to drain the water. The area of the kitchen I choose is not close to either, so I've run stainless braided hose from my basement laundry hookup, through the floor, along the side and back of the sink cabinet. I've also run PVC drain pipe from the sink cabinet to my laundry sink in the basement. Then on July 10th, my brother and I moved it from my back porch solarium into the kitchen, where I put Teflon sliders under the cabinet so it would not scratch up my new hardwood floor, and allow for easy movement. Then over the next few days, when I had the spare time, I worked on making the final hookups, and installing the 52 pound garbage disposal. The original sink faucet works great. The garbage disposal is a monster, but operates quietly. I don't ever intend on using it to dispose food, but I wanted it all hooked up just like it was intended. So everything’s hooked up and fully operational. Once I’ve solved the tub seal leak, I will be ready to start using the dishwasher.

As I mentioned, my 1 year anniversary as a member of automaticwasher.org is today, July 22nd. To celebrate, I’m planning a WASH PARTY the weekend of August 7-9. Please see the link below for complete details (Super Forum Thread #22825). This is an OPEN INVITATION to anyone who would like to come to the Peoria, Illinois area for this party.

This is the best website, ever! Thanks Robert! I’ve found true friends here and discovered that I’m not the weird kid that I used to think I was.

My best regards to all of you.

Mike Haller

1949 G.E. Electric in it’s very first permanent installation some 60+ years after leaving the factory.

Shown more in perspective with the rest of the kitchen.

Underneath showing the 1949 G.E. Garbage Disposal, model FA-3ER, weighing in at 52 pounds including all of the mounting plates and start knob. Also shown is the replacement generic G.E. water valve (blue) on the dishwasher.
Looking down on the sink and dishwasher. The Drain Stopper, just barly visible if you know where it is located, is taken from my 1948 machine. I manufactured a new one for the 1948 machine using a large ball bearing and parts of another metal drain stopper.

The Sink Flange and the “Twistop Control” as it’s called in the parts listings.

Looking in the Dishwasher. Lid spring seen at 11:00 position, closed detergent cup at 4:00 position.

Beautiful. But, why not use such a nice Disposall? They could have used that in "Fargo".

that disposer! love it! look how big it is, looks like it's 3 feet long! now that's a bone crusher! never seen one like it, reminds me of the disposers in the kitchens of restaurants, super big size! they didn't fool around when they built that electric sink!

What a beautiful piece, congratulations! That garbage disposal is certainly no slouch, wow! If only they made them half as good as that now!

Enjoy in good health and I hope you have a wonderful time with your upcoming event. I so enjoyed all the pictures of machines on the Super Forum too.
