ok so I wanted to bring up my hatred for the new range of "dodgey" washers. My cousin bought a Haier washer - TOL at £264.19 - for her new house after she got married. That was 4 months ago. It's now in the garden waiting to be collected. WHAT THE HELL? Even an Indesit will go on for a few years. Also, these HEC/Bush machines in the new argos are looking very dodgey indeed. What's going on? I've never heard of Haier before this year - are they a new company? They're certainly pretty pointless. I'd sooner own a Beko or Indesit over one of those. Anyway, just wanted to share the hatred.

all the best,
Chris

Chris,

Haier is a Chinese made brand, based in China. It's been around for a long time, but, as your sis has seen, some of their products are a bit "dodgey" in terms of quality.

Haier is a Chinese company, and is certainly a pretty new brand to Americans and most Europeans. It doesn't appear to me that their stuff is badly built, but I would certainly think that parts supply is a problem. It doesn't sound as if your cousin was able to get in-home service under a guarantee, as you'd expect from a new machine.

Tell her to call the East End Thug. He'll fix that piece of garbage.

Thanks for the info guys. She's replaced it with a Zanussi now and is having much better luck with that.

People Want Cheap...its the only way to go until finally the new EU waste initiative laws really start to kick in and they DO start fining manufacturers after seeing their mountains of junked in guarantee & year old machines!!!!!!

Its also the way people think, cheap machine, breaks , new machine on the store / credit card easy - off we go again!!!
(unless you are like us and want to try them all...Lol)

In the two years I`ve been selling the new stuff Indesit / Hotpoint has proved to be the most reliable, and if it does break down you can book your own service slot, if parts not on the van usually there within 24hrs and exchanges if required are a doddle all done by company!!! the big boys top end stuff doesnt come anywhere near that when you need service!!!

Haier

Hi Mike & Guys.

Well my Hotpoint Aqualtis died. As you know I drove into the door and broke it. I phoned Hotpoint and they quoted over £200 to repair the machine. I thought this was quite expensive.

I went to Comet and bought a Haier, as it was under £200. I will say it does wash & spin very well. I like the eco switch, which allows different water levels. On the cotton cycle it has deep rinses when you put the eco button on full load. I dont use it on a fast spin, as I remember an old Which Magazine report saying about fast spin machines. I know machines like Miele, Aeg can cope with a fast spin, so I hope with using the Haier on a slower spin it might last, there again pigs might fly.

Will keep you all posted, lol.

Regards

Paul

Hi all

New to hear so Hello to everyone who have not already read all my gabbling on other posts!

With regard to these dodgy machines, the thing is, the Haier at £264.19 was more money than my Mum paid for her Zanussi Essential 1400 in 2007, we got that for £230.00, so it wasn't even that much of a bargain.

It shouldve been repairable under warranty tho, 4 months is just not acceptable & i think some people panic abit too much when an appliance dies and immdiately go into replacement mode rather than trying to keep another machine running. The amount of examples on Ebay is testiment to this.

The people concerned should have alot better service from the Zanussi tho! I think ropey examples are alot fewer & far between where Electrolux Group are concerned. Tho i thought Haier got reasonable reviews from owners on Kelkoo too.

HEC look just plain nasty & cheap. Id rather get a second hand Zanussi or Tricity Bendix than waste £180 on a new HEC, or an Indesit for that matter.

Beko seem to be putting across a more convincing offer tho. So maybe id consider one of those.

Liam

I think the 7kg and 8kg Beko's with the LCD look very cheap.Even the new Indesit's feel and look less cheap and thats saying something! lol

I'll weigh in on this...

...not from a reliability point of view though...

In these times of economic uncertainty, why oh why did your cousin not get the damn thing fixed under warranty??? They would have at LEAST a 12m warranty and I for one would have forced the issue to the point of trying to get my money back for selling goods that 'were not of merchantable quality'.

Post# 367270 , Reply# 10   7/26/2009 at 16:51 (5,359 days old) by fl1012 ()

Beko don't look as nice as Indesit, totally agree. I just think they put across a slightly more convincing prospect from a reliability & longevity perpective. This view is largely based on looking at the different makes on Ebay & seeing which one has the most machines advertised as spares/repairs, so it could be that Beko are infact worse.

I know Beko's dryers are abysmal tho, all the clothes clump together in them i believe.

Ultimately if someone said they wanted a cheap machine id recommend a second hand 90s Zanussi/AEG/Tricity Bendix as im just not THAT convinced by any modern machines compared to their predecessors. Except for Miele which seems solid full stop. Tho expensive.

Liam

I noticed that Argos had HEC and Haus labelled machines around the £165 (pounds Sterling) mark. Absolute tat, if you ask me.

My sister recently bought a Bosch Classixx and it is surprisingly solidly built, for a lower end machine. I do notice that the powder drawer is slightly flimsier (thinner plastic) compared to mum's three year old Bosch Exxcel. All in all, not a bad effort.

Beko...

aquacycle's profile picture
..I have a Beko and, although not as good as a Miele, Zanussi or Bocsh, for £180, it's not a bad washer. It washes well and does nice deep rinses. Even the 40 A-class wash uses a fair amount of water than you can see coming up to the door unlike some washers today. The cycles are bloody long and it's not exactley quiet but it's deffo not the loudest washer I've heard.

Post# 367940 , Reply# 13   7/28/2009 at 19:57 (5,357 days old) by fl1012 ()

Im getting quite convinced about Beko now. They definately have quite a few fans out there. Their customer reviews are generally very good too, unlike the other sub £200 brands.

And with the good water consumption (ie it uses alot) id consider recomending a Beko to Mum if our Zanussi lasts less than 5 years & she doesn't wanna go down the expensive appliance route.

Beko are alright but the 7kg and 8kg models feel so flimsy.

I can't stand those cheap a$$ brands like haier/bush, haus, servis, beko...it just makes me cringe to think people are buying these. We had a haier in at my old shop and i nearly fel over moving it because it was as light as a freestanding fridge! I put all the staff and customers off buying them as theyre god awful.

I just hope the result of all these failing miserable 3hour long cycle cheap machines is that manufacturers will take a long hard look at what they've been making and decide it isn't good enough.

Hi Guys, yes me again.

The machine is the Caple WMI2001, and retails at £378.99. So curious to find out who makes the machine.

my Beko is a WM5100W and is 18 months old and still runs fine. It washes pretty well and has nice deep rinses. The only thing that I don't like about it is that a wash either last 30 minutes (not adequate wash time IMO) or 2hr30mins (which is too long - it generally means I am doing washing all day and I like to get it all done on a saturday morning). It's currently retailing at £189.99 in Currys and is an absolute bargain IMO. I'd sooner own a Beko than any other of the lower priced machines, or even a high end Hoover or Hotpoint. My Dad recently bought the same model as he only does 2 or 3 washes a week and he loves it. It's not the quietest machine I've used but deffo not the loudest and I don't notice it as it's in the airing cupboard (weird place, I know). I'm looking at replacing it with an older model with more reasonable wash times. But as a budget washer, it ain't half bad.

Cheap Machines.

I think its just the luck of the draw with these machines, I know people with beko's who think they are great, others have had nothing but trouble. As I've mentioned before, my sis has a BOL indesit and thinks is great and the cabinet is more substantial than the Hotpoint WD440 machine I had.

BTW, Liam, where in Oxfordshire are you? I have relitives in Thame.

Haier

Hi guys.

I know Haier are cheap to buy and some people have had problems with it. Up to know my Haier is ok, it washes well, and if you select full load it has good deep rinses.

I am saving up to get Hotpoint Aqualtis repaird. There was one on ebay. The person said it was for repair as the drum paddles keep on breaking.

of paying for a BOL and getting 5+ years out of it though. I suppose in this age of faster spins and PCB's cheap machines are not designed to last........OMG.....I sound soooo old!!! lol

Paulc.....

Im in West Oxfordshire, in between a place called Witney and Blenheim Palace (where Winston Churchill was born & near where he was buried).

It's about 35 mins drive to Thame from me though i did used to go there quite alot as a friend of mine lived out there. Very pretty town.

Lets be honest, if you guys buy this Caple (Gorenje), Indesit, Beko, and the chinese HEC, Haeir and Bush, you will only be buying again two years down the line.

Buy cheap buy twice!

Im happy to buy cheap and twice.

Im sorry but I have to say something as I get really annoyed with the "you must buy an expensive machine" attitude on here sometimes.

Just because some people can afford an expensive machine does not mean everyone can. Some people simply do not have the money.

Some people may only be able to scrape together the £169 or £199 to get a washing machine and to them it's a big achievement that they have been able to do so.

£250 + is a lot of money for some people.

Let's not forget that everyone.

Mark

The only Haier stuff I've seen around here has been low end small appliances, like toaster ovens. And they were truly crappy, as least a couple of years ago.

But then I haven't looked specifically for Haier stuff recently, especially for washers etc. Usually the cheapest washers here are crappy BOL top loaders from GE, Whirlpool, etc.

That said, the Chinese can and do make good products. After all, they built the Bomb and have put men in space. I use Chines made measurement tools at work all the time (calipers, micrometers, etc). They work just fine. But, as my machine shop instructor said some years ago, the main problem with Chinese products is quality control. They aim for meeting quotas, not maintaining quality, so it really pays to un-box whatever you get and check it out immediately - preferably in the store before you leave, or in the parking lot - and exchange it for the luck of the draw ASAP if it doesn't work out of the box or has some other issue. Granted it's difficult to do that with a large appliance like a washer or fridge... which is what mandatory 1 year warranties are for.

..I agree completely. My best friend has the same Beko that came with my flat (it was £189.99 new) because she couldn't afford a better machine and as I've said, for £189.99 it's a damn good washer. But look at some of the prices that people are paying for the high end Beko's, Haier's and Indesits - up there with Zanussi's and Bocsh's. Look at these 2 links and tell me which you would rather own...
