Some of you may remember that awhile ago Elginkid and I picked up a 1975 Series 1 Maytag A806. This is what we found inside the matching dryer we just picked up.

It's so thick!

volvoguy87's profile picture
So thick it wouldn't fit and broke through the protective screen.

Oh good grief!! Makes me shudder all the way through intensely. The lady is lucky she never caused a fire.

HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!!!

Let me guess, the set was sold because the dryer was taking FOREVER to dry the clothes. UGH!! Sometimes I wish Darwinism would remove more people off of this planet in a quicker manner, lol. Talk about appliance abuse!

She was originally just going to sell the washer because the timer motor crapped out. But we told her to call us when she wanted to sell the dryer. She's moving this week, and it was easier to sell it to us and have us move it down from the third floor. :) As soon as I get enough money to replace the timer motor, lint filter this set will supersede the A206/DE306 as the daily driver set. I still like the black Powerfin, but the lighted control panel always wins. Bright Lights and Chrome...it's the little things.

I will post some dryer pics later, maybe tomorrow. My camera battery died and I am charging it.

Until then, Natasha, get Moose and Sqvirrel,

Remove the rear cover and give that machine a cleaning. I bet there's a fire hazard amount of lint that poor thing :(

Hello
From across the pond, well we have the same numptys here as well, last week i picked a Hoover dryer with exactly the same fluff pancake.....sometimes I think some members of the public should not be allowed near these machines, they have probably gone out and bought a brand new machine that will suffer the same fate

Gary

Ps yes lights and chrome :-)))

Makes one wonder why the "CLEAN LINT FILTER AFTER EACH LOAD"
warnings disappeared over the years.

Not the first time I have seen that!
I recall as a youngster I discovered a similar situation with a relatives fairly new HOH. When I showed her the disk of lint she exclaimed "no wonder it has been taking so long to dry"-----------well DUH!
I can recall sarcastically suggesting she read the operating manual! A completely un-American act. We just don't do instructions very well.

I forgot the other part...Dave suggested to her (before we saw the lint filter) that maybe the dryer vent didn't get cleaned regularly in her apartment complex, and she told us that it was never really connected to the dryer vent because the duct tape wouldn't hold the vent hose in place, and it kept falling off. :)

Looks like my grandma's machine. She hardly ever cleaned the lint filter on her Whirlpool. I pulled it out once and it was so full that the lint started to fall off the filter and down inside the dryer, must have been at least half an inch think (and we all know how large Whirlpool lint screens are). Anyway I made a point to check it regularly after that.

Indeed we do have 'numptys' over here too...

picked up a Hoover 3022 'matchbox' dryer about a year ago.

fine condition, but came with a present of fluff and lint!

When I picked up my 1962 Maytag A700 washer and DE701 dryer a few months back, it too had a number of loads of lint on the lint screen, thought not as much as the photos above. It also had a 40+ year layer of lint INSIDE the bottom of the machine when I opened it up! I didn't even think to take a photo of it though, I just cleaned it and tossed it in the trash.

Wow - that is incredible!

I clean my lint filter almost every time I dry a load & keep the vent clean, and still, when I took the bottom panel off the dryer last month I had lots of lint inside the dryer.

An appliance repair man wrote in an appliance magazine some years ago that he got a call from a woman who's dryer didn't work properly. When he arrived she showed him the dryer and asked if perhaps the blanket needed to be replaced.... LOL

I clean the lint filters on my Maytag washer and Frigidaire dryer after every use. I have five cats and two dogs so about every three months I clean the dryer with the shop vac, and check the dryer vent for buildup.

I can't believe people are that lazy or stupid not to clean the lint filters. It's just as bad as people who don't ever empty their vacuum cleaner bags. A friend of mine just go a free Kirby Heritage II of of FreeCycle, owner claims it didn't work. He brought to me to look at the bag was overfilled and the tube was packed with dirt. Took all apart, cleaned it with the shop vac, washed the cloth bag, and now it works perfectly. Some people are just plain idiots I guess.

Question.

volvoguy87's profile picture
We have started cleaning the dryer and the inside is a royal mess. This is a thousand times worse than the DE306 I cleaned a few months ago. My problem is the pulley that spins the drum. The darn thing is stuck in place. I have removed the bolt that holds it in position and put some zoom spout oil in the bolt hole but the pulley is still stuck fast. The inside is nasty and I know the blower needs to be cleaned and lubed. How do I remove the pulley?

Also, we got a new lint filter,
Dave
