Doing a load of darks, watching CSI then noticed the time and the Frigmore had not given me it's buzzer (from hell) signal of 'DONE!'. Went down to check - tub full of water (uh oh...) with the final rinse (first 3 rinses were ok). Off the clothes went into the TT for their final spin, then set to wet vac out the tub. We've noticed the pump running louder than usual, have always been careful to empty pockets, etc. When I got all the clothes out I tried it again; the drum turns fine but the pump makes the faintest humming sound, the timer advances to the end then stops - no e/o/cycle buzzer signal. Are pumps tough to change out on these? (I found one online used $21+ship. New, from repair clinic is $80). What would you do?
Advice??

Hmm, mine on my FWT1640 or 1670 is starting to make groaning noises every once in a while.

Well...always careful to empty pockets (Hah! missed)

apparently one of my baby's (un-used!) plastic poo bags made its way into the pump. It took me about 30 minutes to remove the pump, the bag, vac up the extra water that made its way from the hoses on to the floor, then reassemble. The clamps were a bit tricky, for me, to seal around the hoses. I just ran the floor towels through a cycle to check for leaks- none yet :-). The bearing is getting louder but have just bought some time while the hunt begins for a TL.

Congrats! That was an inexpensive fix. So....which brands of top-loaders are you considering?

I never go backwards--

I have had all types of washing machines.New and old.I will never go back to the top loaders.I check my pockets, shake my clothes before loading them and always use the correct measure of detergents, bleaches and fabric softners. The only front loader i ever had that I was not happy with was a brand new Sears Kenmore Elite made for Sears by Frigidaire. It's barings went and there was an issue with Sears service plan I purchased and they cancelled w/out telling me a damned thing. So,as I phoned them for service a year and two months after i bought them,Sears wanted to charge my account $766 for a new set of parts needed to repair it.I took Sears to court and got all my money back.I know for a fact that Sears has othere companies make the Kenmore but to their(Sears) specifications. I replaced them with a Frigidaire set that lasted me 7 years.I sold them to a married lesbian couple who still have them and got a GE set made by Frigidaire similar but a little more deluxe. They were marked"Profile" and I got them from my friend,Mike who owned "Sony's Appliance" a major GE dealer in orlando who gave them to me free!!They had been dropped off the delivery truck and he was going to scrap them still in the box!!I took them home and the only issue was a little deent on the left side of the dryer.I had them a few months and my friend,Liz who was a kitchen designer at Home Depot, had purchased a kitchenAid Ensemble pair for a steal but didn't measure the depth so they were too deep for her new home and we swapped her K'Aid for my GEs.I did like the K'Aids and the drawers they had uderneath but had some issues with the dryer door not being in line and it was a bitch reversing the door on that damned dryer. So,when I moved to Texas,I had to set them across from each other and that made me sell them for $1800 and replace them with a nice L.G. pair I found at a Texas flea market for a measly $250!!!!!!!They had the rear control panel and, unlike the K'Aids, did not make me have to unload one, close the door then load the other.I had them over a year with no problems and the washer, unlike the K'aid,Kenmore,GE and Frigidaires, have a button catcher where any loose change ,or other foreign objects,is trapped and can be easily removed.I sold them for $1200 to a neighbor there who loves them before I moved here.I now have a comercial speed Queen and am happy with it.So,as i said,I will never go back to top loading washers unless Staber decides to sell their pattent to Frigidaire or L.G.

Brands of TLs...

If I can find one (just may have) would go with a mid-80s Kitchen Aid, esp. if it is a 3-speed.

I had one briefly (1990) between my Frigidaire front-loader and the Gibson stackable pair, and it was a very good washer. Has a larger agitator than a Kenmore or Whirlpool, and a slightly slower stroke (120 o.p.m. vs. 160 o.p.m. I believe). I don't care for in-post fabric softeners, and I found mine dispensed much of its contents all over the balance ring at the top of the tub.

I also noticed that buttons pulled off shirts occasionally, and when I had the chance to buy a WCI-built Gibson stackable pair, I sold the KA and went back to a front-loader.

Although I like playing with top-loaders, if I had to have only one washer, it would definitely be a front-loader. I'd choose a Whirlpool or LG with steam, were I in the market for a new pair.

But for the foreseeable future, a 2002 3.1 cu. ft. old-school Frigidaire front-loader and a 2006 Frigidaire top-loader are my toys. I've made a decision not to buy anything I can't pay for in cash.

actually they can be done in about 15 minutes, just had a service man here to replace mine, under warranty, only 8 months old, buzzed and vibrated soo loud sounded like an alarm clock going off when it was running, also door kept staying locked for 2 days after every load, and the adaptive fill did not adapt to the load, only enough water to dampen the clothes, nothing more, a few new parts and all is well....so far!
