Hi I have a 1981 Zanussi washing machine S218T which I beleive originated from earlier models. I am after a picture of Zanussi first automatic from loader washing machine. Zanussi UK Claim to have no archives, Does anyone have a picture, I also have a newer 1999 Indesit Front Loader so a picture of their first automatic machine would interest me, I know indesit started in 1956, went out of bsuiness and was taken over by Artison, then changed it name to Indesit now a big brand in Europe

Hi Keith.

 Welcome to the club - cant remember if i have welcomed you before, so i have done it here.

You ask about Zanussi machines - well there is a bit of a Zanussi thing going on at the moment, although with later machines than you are interested in.

Myself and my partner Rob picked up a variation on an old Zanussi design a few months ago and set up a thread on it, which i have attached a link to below.

If you scroll to the bottom, you find some pictures and talkings about the early machines produced by Zanussi.

The guy with all the knowledge on these machines is 'hotpoint9534', otherwise known as Tom. He is a fountain of knowledge on all things zanny and provided much of the information on the Liberator thread.

There are also threads, still active at the moment, on our Zanussi Z919T, from the early 1980's, as well as Saj's Zanussi computawash.

Pulling everything together, its my understanding that the first Zanussi automatics, sold in the UK, were models DL4, which was cold fill only, and model DL6 which was hot and cold fill.

To the best of my knowledge, no one has seen one for a looooonnnnnggg time and, judging from a picture of a REX machine, rust could have been the killer of them.

Burco

 Hi guys. Does anyone remember the Burco dryer. It did not have a porthole style door, and if I can remember, the filter was at the bottom, more like a bag.

Also, Eastem Burco made a washer. It had 2 controls, silver door, I think, and a spin about 550rpm, or 600rpm.

Also, Caraval, think they were made in Scotland.

 Hi Paul.

Reading through the Bendix instruction book. These machines had warm rinses, and the spin speed was 402rpm.

They look like a good quality machine.

 I prefer the older designs as they are more individualistic than todays range. I wonder why Indesit changed their symbol from the classic crown to the diamond in 1983 then to the current symbol in 2001. Thanks for the old Zanussi Machine. I can see that the DL4 become my S218T machine as the port hold is the same design.

Liberator

 Sorry I forgot but the Liberator machine I have now looked at certainly is technically similar to my Zanussi S218T. They must have done badge engineering in those days. I beleive Hotpoint now Indesit (ironic) was part of GE who originally took over English Electric who made a automatic front Loader and dryer called the Liberator. I suspect when English Eletric was taken over the Liberator name was transferred to Hotpoint and become badged Hotpoint.

 Hi keith welcome to the club from me as well, it seems this thread is going off in all directions, I have very little experience of indesit and zanussi machines, so its good to read of your interest in the early italian machines.

At least 20 odd years ago as a teenager I repaired an early 70,s indesit, the drum had been jammed by some thing so I had the drum apart etc, when testing it I was agast at the slow spin speed and spin drain, I mean I knew thats what it did but had never seen one in action.

You mention the english electric liberators, I yearn to get my hands on one of these, even if I don't ever get one myself, I would just love to see one in action, and see the three belt and clutch set up in action. My grandmother had one in 1959 when they came out, lasted untill 1987. Unidirectional tumble, very quiet with lovely clicks and clunchs of the pump and spin solinoids. Fortunatly I still have the original literature, but as a teenager there was no chance of hanging on to the machine, I suppose at the time I'd never even considered collecting anything, but just thought the instructions worth keeping. At that point my love of washing machines was very suppressed lol.

Paulinroyton, thanks for posting the bendix information, fascinating to read, as I am supposidly restoring this model for a friend of mine, well I've not touched it for months due to a garage move, mostly works ok, but full of scale, and with the coin trap being epoxyied up, I think it will envolve opening the drum up, anyway just thought an excuse to put a photo on the thread. Oh and I'd be amazed if it span as fast as 402 revs, but your probably right, I've never known a figure for it. I had heard of a speed as low as 200 and something? Whos laughing now indesit lovers lol ?

Burco tumble Dryer 1960s

Here is a picture of the Burco i used to own it now lives in a freinds retro kitchen and still being used to this day, it has light in the drum and filter as you describe.
Sorry the picture is not brilliant but i was working on the machine at the time.

This picture shows an older Zanussi than the ones previously posted in this thread. It's almost similar to the one my grandmother had. Hers had only 6 cycles and a button on the left side for spin/no spin. Don't know this model as sold in the UK, but it was in the Netherlands.

Hello Mathew, thanks for your pictures and reply. Interesting Paul that I can see how the design of early Zanussi has been carried forward. Non e one has mention the Brand Name (Badge of Indesit) I think the design of the machines until the early 1980's were classic. My final question is what is the first ever front loader Tumble Dryer. I beleive they again originated first in the USA in the 40's

1st dryer

 Hi Keith,

No photos of these but I'm probably wrong but I've always believed the first uk dryer to be the Parnall, a compact machine with a green enammel drum.

Also around the same time English electric had a full size dryer, comprable in size to the wringer washers such as their own brand `wash and rinse' and the Hotpoint empress. This dryer looks quite odd with a square door with a snout on it. The heating element were housed in the door, the snout being the air intake. Then in the late 50's when the liberator washing machine was launched the dryer was redesigned to match it.

Another dryer I know of was the Acme `sun breeze' available in both a compact and full size, I don't know dates for this but it's design looks very much 50's to me.

I hope that is of interest to you, and I look forward to learning off any others anyone else may know of.

Actually does anyone know if Bendix produced a dryer rather than a washer dryer to match say the model D or La prior to the Philco 70's, I know they did in America but what about in the UK.

Just found a photo of the acme sunbreeze compact I restored for a friend last year, seen next to my regulay hoover dryer deluxe.

I think I will risk ridicule for the state of the kitchen, as the photo of the dryer is worth it, at least there isn't a box of tesco value powder in shot, ( thats over the other side) lol.

As Matt says this was one of the first built UK dryers...This works rather differently to most dryers, it uses a large fan at the back of the dryer and sucks the air THROUGH the front door which has the heater in it...through the clothes to the back where its pulled to the fan and blown through the outlet vent at the top rear!!!

Thanks for your pictures, I have seen there is a vampire Tale of Indesit from Favrit. I do know they have are a big outfit now under Merloni Etc. But does anyone have any old brochures also they made TV and Radios, Brought out the Hirundo name in the late 1970's and it went. Interesting
