I'm intrigued by the silverware baskets. They look solid, rather than the mesh-type we have today, where water can enter from all sides/angles. Did silverware come clean with water entering only at the top of the baskets?

Am I correct in assuming this had a tower that fed water to the upper rack?

the dishwasher in the POD had silver wash, a small spray arm under the silverware basket that sprayed up into it, as well as the regular spray arm on bottom with pop up spray tower

What year would this model have been in production? I remember an older couple right next door to us had a GE front-loading portable (the kind you couldn't build in later because the controls were all at the back) which had the solid silverware basket and the 'spray shower' underneath it.
I missed nabbing that machine when they moved by about 15 minutes!!

I had the middle of line model of this GE dishwasher. Mine was a 1966 model.

My parent's house was built in 1968 and had this dishwasher in it. My mother hated it and replaced it with a Maytag in the early 70's.

I read that the idea behind the "Silver Shower" and the solid side cutlery basket was to direct the water upward, through the basket to ensure the cleaning was complete. I knew of a few that had this over the years and they cleaned like any other GE.

Good guess!

In fact Consumer's Reports downrated this series of machines, even with the Silver Shower, because of this design flaw. GE proudly called them their "Handles Up" silverware baskets, but neglected to observe what you caught on to right away. GE appliances were being designed by admen not engineers during this period; they were very flashy and full of bells and whistles, but they threw out many of the really good design principles that had distinguished their products in the early Sixties. By 1971, when the dishwasher interiors turned from blue(ahhh!) to green(yuk!) they had abandoned both the Silver Shower feature and the stupid solid silverware baskets.

Me, I actually liked that green. Had a BOL in a brand new 1975 built apartment with that interior in the machine, I found it actually quite soothing. I would have preferred that over the light blue that as in my GSD1200. I believe the 950 or 955 from the POD last week, from the next door neighbor, was also that pretty green.
