Here I am stuck indoors on hot and muggy day trying to get a bit of washing done, now my Miele is giving me fits.

First load went off as usual, no problems there; however when the second load began to drain wash water the machine gave off a loud buzzing sound. The noise almost like an alarm and comes seems to come from either the back or lower part of the washer.

Turning the unit off then on got rid of the sound, but as the machine drained first rinse water away sound came back.

Set the unit to "drain", and when that was done turned off and unplugged the washer. Manually drained out any remaining water using the little hose near the pump "filter", then removed the filter thinking perhaps something may be caught in the drain. Alas nothing was found but did notice mould growing around the rim of the filter and there was even a bit in back of the pump. Made mental note to self no more laundry "soap" (as in Fels, Sunlight, Savon de Marseille, etc), as the stuff can gunk things up.

Oh well, after cleaning out the pump and filter, plugged in and turned on the unit to see if the pump was working correctly, and it was as it better be as just paid good money to have a new one installed. There was no noise then, and even when I reset the washer to the final rinse it drained with no buzzing sound.

However tried another rinse and the darn sound came back, however it seems to come and go and not appear on all cycles.

Since MieleUSA is closed until Monday, have to wait til then for official information, but does anyone here have any ideas?
Drain hoses to the sink do not seem to be blocked as water leaves quite normally. Don't think it tis the motor brushes as that sort of sound would appear anytime the unit went into spinning, this sound only comes when the pump starts up.

Thoughts?

TIA

L.

Sounds to me like a relay of some sort is failing. I had a buzzing sound like that whenever I pressed the door release and it was the relay that was the problem. Just a thought L. Keep us posted.

It might be the drain pump. Those new magnetic pumps seem to vibrate/buzz at certain times.

Thanks all for the good wishes and suggestions.

Spoke with Miele USA'a tech support this morning and they couldn't shed much light on the problem either. At first glance the tech support person thought it may be the water protection device, but that mainly goes off when the unit is filling, not draining. Aside from that he wasn't even sure if washers of the 1070 vintage even had such a system.

Since the pump is only about two months from being newly installed there is a chance something was not done properly, or worked itself loose since. Happily Miele USA warrants new parts for three years, so the tech visit (as always quite dear when it involves Miele), may put me out of pocket.

Tech did say long as the washer continued to drain and otherwise work properly it was ok to continue using. Should something major go wrong the machine would either totally shut down or in no uncertian terms let me know about it.

Launderess, sweetie, just pour yourself a big glass of gin, hit the start button and let it buzz. You'll feel much better in about 20 minutes.

I also have this theory: Sometimes you just have to let something work itself out. My LG dishwasher made a rather alarming super high-pitched squeal for a couple of cycles last month, after which it disappeared, never to squeal again.

Consider them "growing pains".

;-)

Shirt Stays ?

I've accidentally left the plastic shirt stays in the collar of a shirt before today. They can work their way into the pump chamber and make a horrendous noise when the pump operates. In my case, I drained the machine and removed the filter. The filter was clean and I couldn't see anything in the chamber ... until I used a torch/flashlight. The collar stay was clear white plastic which was virtually invisible against the white plastic housing. It was at the back of the chamber, near the impeller. I'm much more careful now, but at least I recognise the sound when I make the mistake. No damage to the pump, thankfully.

Did check the pump, even shone a torch inside for good peep, alas nothing.

Went one better and started the pump without the filter in place. Thing turned a treat and was that quiet. Did the same again with the filer in place, but sans water and again nothing, aside from the quiet gentle sound of the pump whirring.
