In order to raise funds to help offset some of the costs of running automaticwasher.org I've decided to create and sell another full cycle DVD.  It's been four years since my last DVD that many of you remember showcasing the 1966 Western-Auto Wizard (as we lovingly call it "the pig").
The reason it has been a quite a while since I did this is because its such a pain to set up the lighting, film them, edit the video properly, copy the disks and mail them out.  This time I'm going to try something new, using a professional DVD Copy and Fulfillment company to do all of the back end work.  If this works out well it will be incentive for me to do new DVDs more often.  I get so many requests to make DVDs of some of my machines because the video and sound quality is so much better and so much more lifelike as opposed to a short internet video. Watching a cycle on a television set or on a computer monitor from a high quality DVD also allows us to present the entire cycle from start to finish without having to break it down to a 10 minute or less video of just the highlights
So if you would like to see a vintage 70s Wards Signature washer run and would like a DVD click the link below to take you to the information page about how to order The Montgomery Ward Show

Gotta have one! Deciding whether to use PayPal or plan B...

I think it would be completely brilliant to show this and the Wizard (go Franklin!!) as a double feature at a drive-in movie. We could show vintage washer commercials instead of a cartoon before the feature films.

Excellent - now we can experience a Wards/Norge of this era without having to actually own one! (sorry Hans ;-)

I remember the night we found this, "Go back - it's a Norge!" We actually weighed out twenty pounds of laundry and crammed it into the washer. It was able to turn over the load, once or twice, but it was fun to try...

This is a great way to support the website too - certainly a worthwhile investment in an institution we all enjoy every day!

Robert, i still enjoy my Wizard video. What a great idea, you did a fabulous job on the Wizard vid, I am glad that you have decided to "hire out" some of the work/process involved in makings the DVD's. I will be purchasing one. Sometimes a washer vid is very calming after a hectic day. Best of Luck with your endeavour. I hope everyone that can participate does. I check out this site EVERY DAY, and i am very happy that there is a way that we can make a contribution toward the expense of this great web site. arthur

I've never used PayPal till now.

Robert, you're a great Webmaster. I'll look forward to your Academy Award winning performance.

Thanks for the work you do for the website and for the club. The new pictures that are coming up are wonderful -- especially the Easy Combination. I've seen only 2 of those in my life -- and never got to use one.

Thanks again.

Thanks everyone for your continued support, I hope you all enjoy my latest DVD creation. The Wards really thrashes those poor towels around, with all that sheer violence this film certainly can't be rated 'G' lol.

My aunt down in Florida had one of these in harvest gold in her garage. I used to love to get to see this machine run when I was a kid. She was the only one I knew who had one of these.

Now that you've decided to farm it out to a Pro DVD Copy and Fulfillment company, have you considered re-releasing the Wizard washer video, or any others previously done, for those of us who were not around AW.org 4 years ago? Also, do you have any plans to create DVD's for other machines in the near future or beyond?

Hi Kevin, yes if everything goes well with this company and there are no major headaches it would be great fun to re-release the "Wizard - Pig" DVD as well as make some new ones. I was thinking the Pulsamatic would be a good candidate as well as the Kelvinator and the '61 GE. Out of sheer curiosity out of all of my machines what would be of interest?

Again that is all based on how this goes with this fulfillment company which is located here in the Twin Cities. Also for those who have ordered let me know what you think of the packaging/shipping and DVD when you get it. I ordered two test shipments and both were very good, they did take about five business to receive it.

Hi Robert,

Yes I'd vote for the Pulsamatic and definately the Kelvinator. But I would be REALLY interested in the Whirlpool combo washer/dryer, especially if you did the "full tour" like the you do in the Wards video! Figuring out a way light the interior w/o over lighting the exterior may be tricky, however.

Thanks everyone, I do appreciate everyone's support. Louis I think you are going to really enjoy seeing this machine, have you ever seen a Norge or Wards machine like this operating? If you have I would assume it would have been on one of your trips to the US. If nothing else you should be able to play that DVD in your computer and make it full screen if you don't have a north American DVD player.

A Norge can be entertaining, to say the least. The agitator has an action similar to that of a GE Filter Flo, except it only spits out water through the top and into the pan on the back stroke. That's why we call it the "burpilator". A Norge makes a sound all its own, sort of a moan with each agitator stroke. Then, there's that unmistakable "shotgun" stop. You open the lid while it's spinning, and BANG!! It's totally frozen stopped the very millisecond the strike leaves the lid switch. Startling. But what's really amazing is it works all the same after you close it again!

There aren't too many of the old Norges left. Most have had a hard life. And when something broke, they were simply replaced rather than fixed.

Watched the whole thing right away this morning. I love the packaging, it's all very professional. The Wards is indeed quite a washer! With those big angel wings, filter, powerful agitation, and a comepletely full tub of water, it really looks as if it does a great job cleaning!

2 questions: Would the filter work on anything other than the higher water level?

-and-

How does the partial drain work? I assume it just holds the brake solenoid de-energized for awhile after the motor reverses? It's an interesting design of a machine, very Maytag like. (although some Kenmo DNA with the neutral drain and the multiple spray rinses after both the wash and deep rinse.)

Great video Robert, I am looking forward to more in the future!

Package arrived today. I've seen these run years ago, a couple neighbors had Catalina washers, same design. Rollover is more lethargic than I remember, but the angel wings sloshing makes for good action.

The spin brake is released when the pressure switch resets. I recall once on one of the neighbor's machines turning the water level to reset right at start of drain, which kicked it into spin ... then panicking a little when the water swirled up high, thinking it was going to run over, LOL. I expected the spinning water would trigger the pressure switch again and stop the spin, but it didn't.

The filter does work at lower levels.

In regards to spin braking ... my F&P GWL08 stops in 3 seconds from 1000/1010 RPM. :-)

My DVD video arrived today-watched it-EXCELLENT!Loved the "tour" of the bottom of the machine-Norge built those well. Now will have to look for one at the swap shops here!one is bound to turn up even in the "Appliance Dead" zone I live in.The partial drain is interesting-don't remember that in my Moms solid drum Norge-that beast just went to SPIN!Loved how the water spun out of the drum.Love those Norge "Angel" blade agitators-lots of action. In one of the tub shots you can see what looks like the tube in the agitator that makes the water "burpilate" out of the top.Now I want one of those machines!wether it be Norge or MW doesn't matter to me.

Jed as Glenn said the brake solenoid is energized (to release the brake and start it spinning) when the pressure switch is reset. I never realized that resetting the water level switch during the neutral drain would cause it to start spinning. I'll have to try that sometime if I ever get another one of those machines to play with.

Glenn I so remember many a times doing something I wasn't supposed to do to a neighbors or relatives washer and having a moment of panic when it looked like I might have broken it LOL. Those were the days.

Rex the solid-tub Norge washers all spun to throw the water over the top the tub, that is the only way to drain those. Once they introducted their "plus-capacity" perforated tub machines around 1963 those all did a partial neutral drain. Why I don't know, maybe to prevent leaks around to tub ring seal.

Glad you guys are enjoying the DVD! It is nice to have some of these machines digitally documented because at some point in the future it is going to be very difficult to keep these machines running.

Now that I have a Norge built Magic Chef like this the video is not only fun but also will come in handy for any future trouble with my machine.

The first time I encountered a Norge with perf tub and partial neutral drain was in the mid 60's at a Norge Village laundromat. The store was gradually replacing solid tub Norges with tubs and agitators like Robert's time line.

Robert:I think it would be a tall order to find a solid drum Norge in my area-but maybe one of the later perforated drum ones may turn up.I have asked at the shops here-and the replies are-"Don't get many Norges here""no dealers here for those"If you want DD WP or KN they are abundant here-same with Maytag. But the others are VERY rare. There was no MW store in this area.Only Sears.I still remember that solid drum Norge my mom had-don't remember if it was a Timeline-just remember the big black angel bladed agitator and the spin cycle that threw the water from the drum.I always thought that would put a real stress on the motor.also bet motors in machines from those days were tougher than those today-notice how many old appliance motors get "recycled" from the machines and run power tools, grinders, etc. You don't see the modern "square frame" motors used in other equipment when its "host" washer or dryer dies. Also remember in older days when MANY power tools were sized to run from quarter, third and half Hp appliance motors.I have an older Shopsmith that has a GE cap start half Hp motor.

Robert, I'm really happy to be able to support you and the web site. I ordered my DVD on September 5th, and it arrived yesterday, September 14.

I just watched the video this evening, and it's great. Wow, such a long spin time between wash and rinse, in contrast to my 1990 G.E. FilterFlo which barely gets up to speed when it stops spinning.

That brake solenoid is just as loud IMO as the drain solenoid on my Homart Dishwasher/Electric Sink.

Thanks again for this latest DVD, and I'm looking forward to future DVDs.

Great Vid, Robert!

Keep up the great work. As a young kid, I loved the Mont. Wards machines. They had all the bells and whistles, while the Norges were more basic. Now that I am an old kid, I wish I could meander through a MW store again. BTW, what is the flue on the front left corner of the tub cover?

what is the thing on top of the wash tub, between 7 and 8 o'clock?

and

BTW, what is the flume on the front left corner of the tub cover?

That is a pull out tray for pouring bleach into. It diverts the bleach into the outer tub.

Thanks guys for you kind comments, I'm glad you enjoyed my video and again thanks for your support of the website.

HI ROBERT!

i really want to contribute to the site and buy your video! i would gladly pay a yearly membership fee as this site has given me so much! i have new friends, some who i talk to by e mail or phone frequently, some who i keep in touch with here.
i also have a new hobby thanks to you and this site! i always loved old appliances, especially dishwashers but never thought i would be a collector and have a house full! my living room has no furniture now! just 5 rollermatics and 3 frigidaire dryers at the moment! my big bedroom has now become my "workshop" storage room and i moved myself into my little spare bedroom! my kitchen/dining area has 9 dishwashers in it! all thanks to automatic washer .org!

but my question to you is this. do you have any other videos available to choose from other than the kelvinator one you listed. possibly anything with frigidaire, or norge 'time line' perhaps?

nothing against kelvinator, i just never really paid any attention to them, i am a die-hard frigidaire and hobart lover!

if not i will go ahead and order the kelvinator video using pay pal (which always works well). i'm sure it will be quite entertaining and i'll learn something no doubt, i just hope i don't develop a fondness for kelvinators, i have no more room or hobby funds left to take on a new brand!

thanks

pete

my living room has no furniture now!

Fabulous Pete, besides living room furniture is sooooo overrated.

Just hold off on the Montgomery Ward DVD if Norge machines aren't your thing. I'm going try and work on a Frigidaire DVD soon, I'm thinking the Pulsamatic is going to be the next in line. My goal is to have it broadcasted on the History Channel, I wonder what kind of ratings it would get? LOL

Post# 379908 , Reply# 61   9/18/2009 at 18:06 (5,330 days old) by soberleaf ()
it would have to be at least an "R" rating

due to all the pulsating shown in the video!

oh what the hell, i'll go ahead and take a kelvinator video, it might be awhile before you get the frigidaire pulsamatic done and i wanna show my support here!

i spend more than the price of your video on much less "wholesome" entertainment on the web anyway on occasion, it won't hurt me to shell out the 25 bucks here! i'm sure i will enjoy it! but when you do get a frigidaire or norge video ready to go count me in!!!

Montgomery Ward Show!

Excellent show and thanks much for the video. I know the machine because my Grandmother had one like this but hers was somewhat more upscale. Not TOL but maybe the next one down with a lighted dial and seperate speed control. It had a soak cycle also. The norges were big into soaking at that time. I just didn't like the loud syloinoids. But on the very later models maytag removed the loud clunks after they were bought out. I remember my Aunt being impressed with this machine and she was thinking about buying one when she moved. But I talked her into a 1/18 instead. It's ashame they don't make machines like this anymore. Thank you Robert for a great show!

Robert:
When you made the video I noticed quite a bit of lint in the filter pan. Was this a Hollywood prop or did it really collect that amount? I don't get very much at all in mine and always wondered if the burpalator was more gimmick than effective.

No Hollywood prop here Bobby, what you see was the actual lint that was caught by the filter pan exactly as it was spit out by the burp-a-lator. Maybe those towels were extra linty??? Does you agitator spit up water as powerful as the one in the video?

Post# 380354 , Reply# 65   9/21/2009 at 09:24 (5,328 days old) by bobbyderegis (Boston)

Robert, yes it does. I tend to underload, so maybe there is just not so much friction on the clothes. Greg gave me a sweet Norge from the same vintage as the Mongomery Ward that has a broken piece from the top of the agitator. It gives you a good quirt in the eye if the fabric softener dispenser isn't on!

Heres's an idea for an AWESOME dvd...the rebuilt, one-step-at-a-time and repair of a Maytag Dependable HELICAL DRIVE Transmission. I'd buy it for sure.

So its just one portion of the agi base that has the holes in it, am assuming this sucks in the water and pushes it through the top!!

Cheers, Mike

Glad you enjoyed the DVD Mike, I'm surprised that a DVD made in the US plays well in DVD players in Europe. I thought PAL and NTSC players were not compatible. Maybe the DVD players over there are dual format?

Post# 380686 , Reply# 71   9/22/2009 at 15:01 (5,326 days old) by brisnat81 (Brisbane Australia)

Hi Robert,

I ordered mine on the weekend, so I'm looking forward to its arrival.

In the PAL world, most devices in the last 10 years are Dual format PAL/NTSC, more often than not they can also include SECAM.

Our Latest DVD recorder auto detects the format and switches appropriately as does the TV, it'll be interesting to see what happens now that Digital TV is taking over as the US and Europe and Australia still have incompatible formats. Luckily for now, a US DVD should always output in NTSC.

That's one of the details I'm working out. I really don't want to put it up on youtube at 10 min per a clip. That's just too much editing to make it work out and flow.

The DVD arrived during my vacation in good order. It's great! No problem here playing it, when I bought a DVD player I made sure it was one that played NTSC as well as PAL. Nowadays I don't think you will find a DVD player here that doesn't play NTSC, even my cheap TV/DVD combo plays it.

I guess the internet stimulated the possibility of playing NTSC, my 8 year old Sony VCR plays NTSC tapes too. The somewhat older Sharp that I have doesn't.

Thanks for making this video!!

Louis

Your story about the day of the Apex pick-up made my skin prickle and my stomach flutter--when the washer was suddenly GONE. A perfect washer tale.

The spinspraypowerflushrinseorgy may be the coolest washer move I've ever seen. Unbelievable.

You must make the next DVD "The Apex Orgy of Rinsing." I'll pay double.

Thank you for the work and finding the links; it's nice to be home again.

In the spirit of Apex over-the top water dramatics, here's a Unimatic over-sudsing.

I would love to have gone, not only for you and the club, but Chicago is one of my favorite cities. Have long-time friends there and in neighboring Oak Park, River Forest, and La Grange. I absolutely LOVED the Canton Tour; it was a life-changing experience. Alas, off the grid for many months, I didn't know about it, but was too ill to make it anyway. Here's to the future and to a hot time in Texas. Cheers, Terry
