We have a 1985 model Whirlpool top-mount refrigerator/freezer, that's been doing us flawlessly for twenty years, but fairly recently, it's developed an issue. Every time it shuts off, the compressor shudders, and thumps really hard. How many of you have seen this, and how much longer will it last once it starts doing this?

They hjad a GE older than my father.. It thumped everytime it turned off as long as I can remember.. It just died this past fall.. (The color of the unit really dated it.. Avocado Green..) But who know, it could die tonmight while youre in bed.. And you'll know in the morning when you pour that milk onto your cheerios..
It may not be quite that bad. There may just be a loose bolt fastening the compressor to the frame underneath. Whenever the compressor shuts of, it may shake, and bang up against the frame. the fix would be just to find the proper size fastener and replace it.
