This weekend I made the trek to Omaha to give Greg a hand with his Maytag Combo. He was having timer issues and begged me to come down to the Corn Husker state and lend him a hand.

Thankfully we were able to get his timer put back together so we didn't have to tear apart the parts machine.

What a shame it really would have been - the parts machine we found behind Lowes was in such great shape........

Oh who am I kidding!

A few months ago I was contacted by a very kind gentlemen out of Central Kansas, and wanted to know if I'd be interested in his Maytag Combo. Shortly after talking to Steven over the phone I made arrangements to come pick it up a few months from then.

Fast Forward to this weekend. With the Maytag being in Central Kansas who better to tag along than Greg? And what is wrong with this picture - the person who owns the Maytag isn't even helping unload it from the store!

After getting it to Omaha we were just blown away by how clean and nice this machine was. The history was hazy on just how it came to be at the store so we will never know exactly why it was so well preserved.

This is the 5th Maytag Combo know to still exist. Two in Newton at the Jasper County museum (Whirlpool supposedly shipped it back to the museum after clearing everything from the Factory Store and shipping it up to Benton Harbor), Greg's, and Kim's.

Well, Mad Men is just about to start. More photos to come after 10!

Okay - more photos!

Clean drum, with some left over rinse conditioner!

The boot is starting to dry out. I have a few ideas of how to revitalize once I start working on it.

Unfortunately I don't have my serial decoder - but IIRC it was produced in mid 1962 making it a late 340W. (DY)

When I first saw the back of the machine I figured the whole back came off. While I cannot repeat what I said last night, it is disappointing that they couldn't make the inspection cover just a little bigger.

Pressure switch, fill flume, and the condensing nozzle, and soft original hoses!

Note the factory installed condom around the pressure switch. Just another great design to have the fill flume right next to a live switch!

While the timer is a major weak spot in these machines (note the much needed repairs stated earlier for Greg's) - it is pretty cool to use. You first select how long you'd like your wash by turning the dial clockwise. Then you set the blue tab with the duration of drying time needed. Once that is done you choose your fabric choice on the fabric selector and the machine starts up.

Unbelievably this machine runs quite well. The pump and blower need a little bit of work, as well as the tub boot. Once those things are in check it will get a water test!

Selector close up. Right hand set are the fabric controls which start the machine. The left hand bank control the wash temp as well as the heater during wash.

Very thrilled that this machine was uncovered and made it home in one piece. I've been dreaming about finding one of these since I first saw Greg's back in 2005. Knowing how difficult it is to find them I never imagined that I'd ever find one. Thanks to Greg for being a huge inspiration on the quest for the Maytag Combo!

At the moment I am quite the novice on the Combo's - so I'll refer back to Greg's original post of when he brought his home. Lots of good info packed into that 5 year old thread.

Oh yeah - I was just kidding about this being a parts machine. It will wash again someday!

There was a gas drying/vented version, but not produced as long as the electric; introduced after the electric.

It had a good condenser with a spray of water introduced into the blower housing, similar to their water dryers. It was a more efficient dryer than those that condensed by just running a sheet of water down the inside of the tank.

The water heater did not use a separate element; it just turned on the dry heater (Calrod-type element located in the upper area between inner and outer tubs) during wash, like the first GE combo. When John used the water heater in his with work uniforms treated with Spray & Wash, the petroleum distilates would produce a smokey haze in the upper part of the drum.

One design flaw with the machine is that the plastic baffles are screwed in from the outside of the drum so if one breaks, the tub has to be pulled to correctly install a new one.

Wow Ben that is absolutely awesome, CONGRATS!!! That machine looks to be in incredible condition, like it was just unboxed! Just stunning!

I am just amazed and in awe every time someone finds some incredible or rare machine, that looks like it's been sitting with little or no use for the last 40+ years!

You have been VERY fortunate in that department! I'm sure there are others, but the two that really stand out in my mind are the Bendix combo and this Maytag Combo!

Question: Where are the water and drain connections on this machine? They are not visible in any of your photos.

Kevin

Thanks guys for your kind comments! The Bendix Duomatic is a far cry, condition-wise, in comparison to the Maytag. While the Duomatic had little use it sat in a limestone basement in upstate NY for all of its life - thus it needs a complete tear down. The Maytag shouldn't require nearly as much attention as the Duo will (even though they are severely trouble-prone). The Maytag came from Lanerd, KS.

Togs - it may take a few days but I can post copy from the service manual that should help clear up any questions on how the condensing system works on the Maytag. Tom's write up is spot on!

Kevin - the 4 solenoid water valve is at the bottom right hand side of the base. It requires a complete cabinet tear down if it needed servicing - just one of the many lovely service-minded engineering decisions made with this machine. The pump hose would exit to the left of the electrical block (currently missing from the machine.

That is an amazing find. I hope you find it to your liking and that you can get it washing and drying as intended. I would be interested to see a comparison of this to other washer/dryers like Bendix to compare design methodology and performance. Maytag was known for such superior engineering, I wonder why the combo is so comparatively crude in some respects (cabinet access!)?

Congratulations,
Dave

What a fun weekend! It's rare that we get to share in seeing the pure joy on our friend's faces but seeing Ben get this combo was as good as any Christmas morning could hope to be. It really is a beautiful machine and with a little bit of work and a couple of 240v relays for the longevity-protection of the timer, Ben will be washing and drying in the same drum very soon.

I'll post some more pictures this week from the trip - and of the timer repair that wouldn't have been possible without the support and help of Ben for my Maytag combo.

Thanks again for a great weekend and congrats on a well-deserved rarity, Ben!

Bob - Steven had a copy of the parts book for the Combo. No owner's manual to be found.

Dave - these machines were a disaster for servicing. We take for granted the simplicity built into the Helical top loading washers. The combo - while a beautiful machine, is a rushed together production of a machine. With Bendix tying up the good patents, it left the other manufactures to come up with creative ways to put a combo on the market. While they were creative, they also weren't very practical in terms of longevity. I am starting to scan the repair manual now, and will include the section here titled: How it Works.

Enjoy Steve!
