Good grief…things we do for the love of appliances! Last Wednesday I flew over 3000 miles (one way) to look at a dishwasher in Medford NJ. Wow talk about determination! I could not resist it…she is a beauty! Just the way I remember when I was 5.

My new good friend Darren and his buddy Bill from Philadelphia met me at the airport and we drove to Medford. The dishwasher was located at the church and in excellent condition (50 year old machine!). That night we were up to 2:00 am dissembling the dishwasher to fit in several boxes for shipping internationally. I had to catch the flight back home the next morning…man I was tired.

Well – the challenge was not packaging the dishwasher was trying to explain to the Canadian custom officer in Toronto the reason why for my quick trip to Philly.....they thought I was absolutely crazy or had other intentions..She said “must be some special dishwasher”…I almost missed my flight back to the west coast.

I can’t wait to get it…hopefully the machine doesn’t get too badly damage in transit.
Bob

That looks real nice! Is that one of the "short-cycle" KAids?

That's a beauty. That's a UM 4. Has The Cast Iron Spray arm (aka Big Blue) and a 3 1/2 minute cycle. Gravity Drain. I love the Old Hobart Logo on the Door.
Here on the Cape according to the Local Commercial Repair company I use for my equipment there are still about 3-4 of these still working here on the Cape.

Definitely worth the trip!!

Wow Bob, I can appreciate what ordeals you have to go through to get stuff across the Canandian-US border... The crew down at the Stanstead/Newport border now roll their eyes and say 'Mon Dieu! What have you bought now?' when they see me pull up... LOL
Congratulations on saving a dream machine!!

Man...I am still recovering from the Canadian Customs ordeal...so degrading.....I guess they are doing their job...

looks like a kd-12

with a stainless tub.

it's a commercial machine right? does it use the same motor and pump as the kd-12 would use? with that big blue spray arm i am assuming it does. since it is commercial is the motor the 1/4 hp. like the residential models or does it have a beefed up motor?

love those old hobarts, have 2 kd-12's myself. this one should go forever with that stainles tub. last time i checked a few pump seals were still out there at hobart parts, at least for the kd-12 series so if you need one (and it's the same pump) you should be in luck.

enjoy it, all the work to get it was half the fun!!!!!!!!!!

I really can't wait to get this dishwasher in my home....I debating whether I should convert this dishwasher to a KD-10 (I have couple KA at home as parts...) This macine would wash better with more rinses and longer washe time since I don't have a booster heater.

This is my KD-12 machine at home...the tub enamel is worn and rusted under the door. The UM-4 will be workhorse!

This is the inside shot...doesn't look that bad - but the there is significant amount of rust under the door...

Well...this is me at the age of 11...man that was 31 years ago!!! When my family visit my uncle on the West Coast, he would take the kick panel off for me and I would sit there and listen to the dishwasher work....man it just seems like yesterday....crazy eh!

What an awesome find!

It looks to be in incredible shape! I like everyone else love the Hobart badge!

Bob the picture of you in front of your uncle's Kitchenaid is priceless. Do you know how long they used it and what happened to it?

Brent,

My uncle had that dishwasher to about 1986/87. He sold it to someone. He gave me all his spare parts. To this day I wish I saved them. The tub in his dishwasher was worn and rusted - although he had it glazed couple of times. He ended buying a GE Hotpoint - downgrade in my opinion!

Funny, when I was 10 he also had a Ward's washer and dryer...wow...I would open the lid...bang (break would sound)...my mom would come running downstairs to tell me stop playing around with the washer..memories!

The Hobart Dishwasher is officially in transit to Canada (last resting place) - many thanks to Darren and his buddy Bill!!! Trying to organizing shipping through Fed EX was not easy...their customer support was next to useless...poor Darren and Bill had to go through hell with the Fed Ex staff in Philly.

We had the dishwasher in three boxes Box 1(tub/base/racks), Box 2 (panels, spray arm and heavy legs) and Box 3 (motor/pump assembly).

I ended up using UPS...and their pick-up charges were significantly less then Fed Ex...great customer support! This was too easy!!! No hassles - yet the forms were like a Harvard Entrance exam.......

Now the waiting game, hopefully all of the boxes do not get badly damage during shipping and no hold up in customs....

Can't wait to see the Hobart in my home :)

Darren, I believe there are couple pictures ;)

An Excellent Find!

It was and still is for the most part, a pleasure to work on any unit that is installed in a church setting where the usage on the machines is so light compared to what they were engineered to be put trough. Not to mention the cleaner environment!
I cannot tell you how many UM's I worked on and rebuilt over the years. While they used to be in great demand in the NYC area,as places like Dunkin Donuts and other donut and coffee shops made the transition to paper products, most undercounter and even some counter level SM/LM series machines slowly disappeared. In addition, most manufacturers, or at least Hobart replaced them with the normal sized units we see today or should I say, saw before the tall tubs came out!
The UM was a great machine no matter where it was used. Totally iron clad and tank like in its build.

It looks like those extra legs will bring it up to standard counter height so it will do fine in your normal kitchen setting, You will just have to get some kind of kickplate made up to cover the opening.

The short cycle will do a good job of cleaning even with a domestic powdered detergent and at least 140 degree water.
Of course the hotter the water the better results. If you changed it to the KD10 setup, that longer wash time will cool the water off even more and then you will have a problem with the drying.

I would suggest that you insulate the tank well and stay with the short cycles. If you have the room under the cabinet or somewhere close by, like in the basement under the machine, get yourself one of those 6 gallon 115 volt hot water heaters and have it bump up your domestic supply to the maximum setting on the tstat. That will ensure that the UM gets the hottest water possible.

I had one in my mom's basement and we always had our hot water at the max setting and I had many cycles at 165 and it flash dried the dishes well and without any jet dry! Of course the great soft water in NYC helped!

I also had the pumped drain on it using a KD12 motor and pump setup. I DID use a WM-1 series timer and wiring harness to make it work as it would run the pump continuously from start to finish and I had installed a drain solenoid in the drain line after the KD12 pump without any damage being done to the pump.

When we had big holiday dinners, I would be bringing up the first tray or 2 of cleaned dishes before the table was totally cleared off between courses. Always amazed the relatives with that move! Most holidays, the KDC21 was hardly used. It got maybe one load at the end of the night with the dessert plates and coffee cups!

You will love the UM for sure and if you want to, you could probably piggy back a KD10-14 top rack on the UM's lower rack to expand the glass and cup washing capacity. Or you can put half a rack of dishes and then the cup rack in and work it that way.

No matter what, it will be fun and a conversation piece.

Hey Steve,

Thank you for the advice. YES a church is probably the best place to find vintage appliances! No crud, grease, clean!!!

Last year I purchase a bunch of spare UM new parts (timers, springs, some seals, handles, etc) from a fellow who was closing his business in Seattle. I will take your advice leaving it the 3 1/2 minute timer - insulate the tub. Now the only thing I will look for is a drain pump parts from a KD12P or 11P.

I just checked online with UPS and my dishwasher is already in Canada - Vancouver Customs...I think it just cleared and now in transit....next week my baby will be home.

Can't pump it up!

Hate to tell you, man, but you won't be able use the pump on the UM. The whole setup is not designed for it. Starting with the motor used in it. If you switch the motor from a 11 or 12P unit it will allow you to use the pump but you still have the problem of getting the pump to run during drain periods which neither the microswitch nor the newer style timers were ever designed to do.
You may be able to rig up some sort of time delay relay which will keep the motor running for a necessary period of time to drain the machine.Someone on here may be able to steer you in the right direction for that stuff.

Like I mentioned above, I actually used a timer from the next model series which was the WM-1 Series and in order to make the timer reset and then run a cycle, I had to hit the red start button 2x. The UM series actually had 2 cycles programmed into the timers so that each time you pressed the red button, it would just start a new cycle. The timer did not need to reset to begin a new cycle. The newer style was like the K/A's in that raising the door latch would move the timer to the start position. That fucntion was done by that extra push on the switch.

By the way, NONE of those timers are available anymore, neither the UM's nor the WM's.

One consolation is that you have the taller legs on your unit so you may be able to gravity drain it right into your sink drain anyway. or worse comes to worse, drain it into the basement if you have one?

Let me know if I can help any further.

It is amazing ! When you meet and see people who has they same and rare interest that we share here. Well when I got to the airport and went down a long, long corridor and saw Bob it was like seeing a machine rock star! lol... Because if I ever see the rest of the members here as well I'll feel the same. Anyway we had a nice journey to get the dishwasher in Medford N.J. The church was beautiful well kept place never seen nothing like it, the building was log cabin style very different. So we made it back in one piece THE DISHWASHER IS STUNNING what a beauty the 3000 mile trip was not a waste by far. Bob has a talent to behold he tore that machine down in about 20 minutes, this is where you see the passion where you knew he loves his machines, and a talented mechanical engineer that I admire and wish I had the ability to be, Thanks Bob for the experience. And then we got to the packing....Which takes some skill lol, with my best friend Bill, Bob, & me. So we had a nice time we rape it up and did not had much time with my little guy's( me washers ) But i think he liked them, What do you think Bob ? lol
Well all was done a little after 2 AM and here we are...Bob's holding the Hobort motor pump. I think where a little tired here but happy.

Hey Bob you never told me about about how you liked that Classic Philadelphia Hoagie sandwhich ?

All I have to say on Shipping guy's is... GO UPS.

Darren - the Classic Philadelphia Hoagie sandwhich was a life saver!! That day I did not eat a thing...wow ... it hit the spot!! To bad my trip was really brief...I would have liked to spend more time there. Would have been great to meet other AW members too..

I am please to say that the three boxes arrived to Victoria but I missed the UPS delivery guy. He did not ring the door bell ( I did not hear his knock)...so now I have will have to wait until Tuesday (Monday a Canadian Thanksgiving). Man I can't wait to get the dishwasher home....like Christmas (waiting to open the gifts)! I hope the dishwasher is not is still in good condition after traveling 2000 miles.....

Wait and see..... Next Wednesday I hope to have pictures...

BOB.....

I don't know how Darren kept his hands off you...lol...but otherwise...next time we should all get together.

Put a huge sign on your front door for these UPS guys, they DON'T knock on purpose, been there done that, I sat in an upstairs window and watched them walk up and put a "sorry we missed you" sign on the door, with out knocking or ring the doorbell, and they claimed they knocked loud, they done this too many times, caught him and gave him hell......

can't wait to see the videos

I got a line on a UM-4 here in Massachusetts. It's still in operation and is mint. My Chem. Guy at the restaurant is keeping me posted as they want to replace it with a new Piece of crap. I'll let you know when I get it and if for Parts, I'll part it out to you. Or anyone else. Deal ???
